Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am attempting to replicate Leonardo da Vinci's aerial screw. It was essentially a pre-helicopter design that was never fully realized. There might be some reasons for that.

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

Da Vinci would be so proud that his creation actually works in a simulated world inside the personal thinking machine of a guy called Man of Scrap. And that people can watch a moving and talking picture of his creation actually working on their own thinking machines.

Theres a paper “plane” design where its just a tube with fins all around the rim on one end of the tube And you’d throw it while giving it a spin and it should fly Quoted “plane” because its not really a plane, its just a tube lol Note: Look up “Flying paper tube” for reference

fun fact: way back when da vinci was alive and in similar times, copyright did not exist so inventors to safeguard their works would put small flaws with crippling impact in their creation so that only them would know how to build it properly also many projects were studies of functions and proof of concepts

On the PlayStation port (I assume for Xbox, too, but I don't own one), The achievement named "Leonardo Da Vinci", which requires to be in the air for 60 seconds without power cores, and it shows an image of the aerial screw, sadly no power cores would probably mean a glider, instead of an aerial screw.

Upgrade time: 2 counter-rotating devices should be stable aside from the stability of the sails. And you should need half as many sails so maybe that would be more stable.

Fun Fact: There are drones being developed using the aerial screw type of prop. It is show to be comparable in stability and power to propellers of a similar threshold with the possibility of being a lot quieter and more thrust at lower RPMs, along with some other advantages - though its major drawback is its weight of construction. The fun bit is that it generates lift in an entirely different way to most conventional methods, so a whole lot isn't known about it at this time and they haven't yet determined an ideal shape for them.

Try making the French "Marquis' Multiplane" of 1908. It was originally a flightless machine, but seeing how you tinker in trailmakers, i think you can pull it off and make a flying version. Also, you could use magnets to try and 'grab' the sails in a certain positions like the transformer you showed in this video of yours. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3uVgHaQqMSJsMU

A long time ago in brick rigs I made a series of 'tornadoea' which were effectively spinning screws, that games build grind allows for different axes but in trailmakers you could make a series of layers that are plus shaped with a servo between each layer, and then as they spawn they rotate by like 45 degrees or so, then adding more servos to angle the sails, this making a corkscrew shape

There is this device kids played decades ago. It is lost to history now. It has ball/disc like pointy bottom and a lever on top, if you press it down it spins until it looses its momentum due to time or collisions. Could be fun to make something like that and see how fast and how long you can make it spin.

This actually wouldn't be all that hard to modify to get working in Trailmakers. I can think of two different ways. One, tailfins or sails extending radially outward from the base would provide a lot more rotational drag, putting much more of the power into the air-screw. Alternatively, any even number of them connected to each other, with corkscrews in counter-rotating pairs would work, though then it'd just be a primitive quad-copter. You could also make one with two concentric corkscrews on concentric axles with gearing to make them counter-rotate, but... I think that'd far outstrip the materials available and understanding of mechanics of the time.

Aerial Screw - The precursor to one of the most widely used inventions in american households, the Ceiling Fan! Attached upside-down to the ceiling of a room and you have a ceiling fan using this machine and method.)

Different kind of contraption but also to get stuff in the air, something i saw recently and made me think "would this work in building games?", look up something called SpinLaunch, while you cant go to orbit it could still be a cool way to travel. Might be more useful in scrap mechanic survival btw, both for quick travels (if you can land in water) but maybe also for flinging crop crates to farmer?

You can also add wings to the base facing in the opposite direction, so it slows it down with drag, and any rotational force left in the base gets turned into lift. I've done the same in Besiege many times, and actually created some perfectly stable flying machines that way.

Check out the main battleship guns on Space Pirate Harlock. A proper turret needs 2 axis of rotation, but in space/in the air you need to fire in all directions, so one of the axis of rotation is the “waistline” of the spaceship.

A possible idea that i thought of to lessen the counter-rotation is to add tail wings to the base so it catches more horizontal wind which slows it down so more of the energy goes to actually rotating the screw

So I can see why the historically-accurate creation sparked- the lift created by the sails pushed them up against eachother since you didn’t have them all connected individually to the bar in the center, instead creating an almost spring-like design that the generated lift interacted with. Rq I’m not an engineer lol, I don’t know how to use proper terms to explain this. I’m just trying to put what I see into words
