In Quantum mechanics, an operator represents an “observable.” It means, a property of a system that can be observed. e.g. a particle’s momentum or position can both be represented as operators. e.g. Momentum of a particle is the outcome of applying the momentum operator to a vector that represents the state of the particle, to get the numerical answer which is particle’s momentum.
