If you have been tuned in for the last few episodes you know that the starboard engine in our sailing catamaran conched out a little while ago. We are trying to up our sailing skills and get more proficient at engineless sailing. However, today was a major FAIL...

Of all the sailors and all the videos in all the places in the world, you two are the most delightful. No drama, positive attitude, you two appear to be very much in love. You are both a joy to watch, and example of life well lived.

Oh my, I got a great birthday present today as you published a video. April 2 is my birthday & here I am quarantined for at least another 30 days - let’s face it will be much longer I think. I live an old age facility (not a nursing home or assisted living, but everyone is a senior citizen.). Don’t tell anyone (I know the Internet is a great way to keep a secret), but after while I am going to buy some Bud Platinum Light beer, sneak back to my apartment & watch this again while pretending to be with you. This old lady loves water & swimming & since this will be “virtual” swimming I will be safe. God Bless all & everyone stay safe.

We usually sail off anchor, a little trick (that works on our boat) is to have two reefs in the main and the staysail flying to give better balance and much more control of the boat. Being how you don’t have a staysail, you can try just using some unfurled headsail. Good attempt at sailing off anchor! Seems like everyone motors their sailboats everywhere and rarely use their sails. Glad to see other sailors sailing!

If you have not figured the chain problem out, yet, windlasses generally are designed to take “ISO short link” chain. Just asking for G40, 5/16, for instance, is not enough, as it comes in both long and short link. Some chain designations, like BBB, only come in short link size. And, almost all windlasses have a 3 digit code stamped on the gypsy somewhere with the correct chain size (you usually still have to call the windlass manufacturer to find out what chain goes with what code. I learned all of this one day with a customer rep from Maxwell who took the time to educate me on it when we were buying new chain. Enjoyed your video!

On Fishing: Check out Capt. Mike on Reel Reports.... lots of basic instruction you all can put to good use. Use steel leader in the Crib... 5-6 foot section using haywire twists and ballbearing swivels to attach your lures. Wahoo and Baracuda have very sharpe munchers... cut right through mono. Also recommend a teaser or two in open water... helps attract fish in the water to your bait. Be good to have a gaff on board if you do not have. Tight Lines! Great Vids! Stay Safe! Sail on Silver Girl!

That’s Certainly an Awesome Anchorage at the end! 🏝🌴🌋Very surprised you chose the Main over the Jib/Genoa, although I couldn’t really tell the direction of the wind, you can raise the main on anchor, but the Jib is much better for getting the bow pointing where you want!

Keep trying, like any skill worth having it takes time to master, good on you for trying, and better luck with your next try. I've done it on Mono's and Tri's but never a Cat, but I can imagine how hard it would be, maybe make it easier on yourself and try from an anchorage where you have enough space to beam reach in both directions for a little while to build up some speed, choose the direction you want to leave and try to fall off on that tack, but also make sure you have space if you end up falling off on the other tack you can keep going, thats how I started with my Tri. Hope this helps.

You tack off an anchor.. and Catamarans don't tack well.. Back the jib..Use the swing of the boat to get that angle before lifting the anchor at the last second.. feels good when you finally achieve it..
@aCycloneSteve
@aCycloneSteve 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm no expert but I was always told that if you're engineless you wait until the winds and tides are right, us the jib, pull the anchor almost up and when the boat is mostly pointed the correct direction pull the anchor up the rest of the way. (back winding the jib if necessary) Trying to do that single handed in so so conditions SUCKS!
@richardosman6825
@richardosman6825 4 жыл бұрын
Challenging to do. Next try to have both the jib and main up when you raise the anchor, back wind the jib while letting the main swing very free until you have fallen off deeply then sheeting the main to accelerate and obtain steerageway. Nice to have the engine/s running in neutral just in case. Good luck!

Just remember, the number one thing that causes sailors to get in trouble: trying to keep to a schedule. Especially with what’s going in the world now, eventually you may just have to hunker down someplace on the boat where you can reliably go ashore every once in a while to restock food/fuel.

I bet u could have paddled off anchor by some big strokes and u would be a bit off the wind making way enough, but as it was the wind blew u astern. u can also just push by hand ur main to one side, reverse sail working ur rudder so as to get the wind to beam, let it go and ur underway... or u could turn ur other engine on.. bet ur glad is started. been there.

Next engine less take off, try doing it with just head sail jib. This way you can maneuver easier and get pointed on right direction and loose anchor..don't raise main first or not completely. Do it with higher winds easier like 10 kts , practice with room and depth no boats.etc best luck.

Hello guys ... been watching the channel for quite a long while now. Thanks for keeping the videos coming and taking up along on your adventure. Now if I may, I'l venture to try a little constructive criticism on your video production just in case no one else will. :) Sailing videos are evolving and there's steadily increasing competition for who we are going to spend our time watching. Of course once we get to know you we accept a lot more than new visitors to a channel, you've grown well and hope it keeps on upward. To that end, though what was good enough in the beginnings of travel adventure sailing videos is not so much anymore, I'm talking about the Blair Witch shots of every step of a process or constant inclusion of feet shots. Too much already, and its padding. We viewers want to see what's interesting, new etc., a step by step 15 shot process to hoist a dingy doesn't really cut it for keeping us engaged in your story. Let me suggest instead of the padding with superfluous shots you try and include instead something that orients us as to your whereabouts and destination. Simple to do with a chart, map etc. The ole formula for making films of Wide Shot, Medium Shot, Close up still works and was developed so the audience would have a feel for where they were and progress into more intimacy in the story. Now that doesn't have to be followed as a step process in your type of production, but it needn't be left out either. Yes detail is fine, but not very effective if the big picture hasn’t been presented. And while on the subject of shots, big in the face looking up the nose shots are not on the pleasant watching list. Otherwise, it's up for grabs as to what you want your style and story to be but jerky quick spastic shots edited together don't make for good filmmatic storytelling. It's okay and good even to cut from one scene to the next without including the camera movement in between, that's usually done for a specific effect. Anyway as in anything there's always more finessing that can be done, but just the basics will pay dividends in watch-ability. Let me put emphasis on saying, my first mate and I very much enjoy you three and your adventures. It’s plain to see Tula is a Cat built to sail, you two make lovely companions and you’re in some great locations. So please know I would only take the time to sit down and comment because I thought it may help. If it’s otherwise plz ignore and roll on, on offense taken or intended. Lastly if you wondered at all … We’re liveaboards who’s life has solely been financed by our film and media production for some decades ..  just so you don’t think I’m a troll. Fair Winds

Zingaro still is, and is being refit by new owner. Billy will correct me if I'm wrong, but Adreniline is built to spec by a authentic boat builder, whereas Zingaro was owner built and modified so you could access the hulls with out going outside. I don't know if this is relevant to there sinking but James vows to never buy another home built boat.

Can I give a slight critique? At around 7 minutes you did something that is dangerous. You took a bight around your hand. I know it's a small thing, but it might cost you a finger or worse!!!!!! I hate being a safety dick, but in 30ish years as a farrier, I've seen lots fingers, thumbs, and palms that were severely modified by friction. Love you guys, even if you have less than the optimal number of fingers, lol.

You are absolutely right Dan. Although I knew the scenario and the load was light on the sail it’s no excuse. Maybe practice this so you can show people that it is possible and easy. You just gave justification to all the boaters that would never even try it.
