Dominica is one island we have been wanting to sail to for years! It is known as the nature island of the Caribbean. The sail was amazing and we are so proud of our catamaran, Adrenaline, for another successful journey!

Great video as always. But I really want to thank you for your real time updates. It's interesting to learn how you are coping with pandemic related issues; but more importantly, it's wonderful to see how sensative and caring you are about how the rest of us are doing. Here, in suburban Boston, things are pretty intense. My daughter is an ICU nurse in a Boston hospital, and the horror stories are unreal. Keep the vids coming. They are a most enjoyable destraction.

I was stationed on guam for 6 years. I trolled almost every day. I never kept big cudas (i.e. 3 feet or bigger). They were almost always toxic. On guam, there were lots of boonies cats (feral cats). The practice was throw a piece of the fish to the strays. If they ate it, it was safe. If they refused, throw the fish away. I guess they could smell the toxins.

I like that idea ! Heads I win, tails the barracuda looses ! If you ask me barracuda are 10 times worst then the Lionfish to the marine environment ! Since most of the time, they stalk deep sea fishing reefs ! Just waiting for a free Grouper, or Sapper dinner ! From fisherman throwing back undersized fish, or out of season fish ! Grrrr!

U brought back good memories when sailing up the same route. In 2017. I had a knockdown right past canefield. I was about 2 miles out. Couldn’t turn up n in because the wind was coming down on top of the boat. As well as directional ,ne. I found on my chart a caution note. It stated recommended distance on leeward side 5-20 miles off shore. Your last stop like mine in no. Dominica coming into the bay( rat turn in) The wind was blowing @35 it’s . Wakes u up fast :). Have fun great sailing

I ate fresh caught Barracuda in the Grenadines, one of the best fish I have eaten. I asked about Cigatura and they assured me we were far enough south of the US that they were safe to eat. I probably ate it half a dozen times with no effect, but I don't know if I'd eat it regularly. However it was quite delicious.

On your castnet, bait 1st helps a lot. Dried peas work great. Fish go crazy for them. Bugs and termites work great also. I also toss out a few dried peas every hour while trolling for deep sea fishing. The fish will follow the trail of your peas to your lure. Fish love bait but they also love their veggies which they seldom get.
@jjohnbrown1221
@jjohnbrown1221 4 жыл бұрын
In Palestine they would fish for big fish with cast nets. They would go to deeper water using a fish locator. Toss out some fish food or peas and wait for the fish to come. Then toss net on fish as the eat bait. You have to wait for net to hit bottom so fish doesn't get away, before you start pulling up.

Barracuda is probably the best tasting fish I have ever eaten. I always thought they were generally considered poisonous and off limits for eating until I learned a few things during my 7 years on Grand Cayman. According to local fishermen, barracuda up to about 3 1/2 feet are generally safe to eat. Another thing to consider is where the fish is caught. Ciguatera basically becomes more concentrated as you move up the food chain so larger fish generally contain higher concentrations. The more reef area containing the small organism that produces the toxin, the more the fish feeding off the reef accumulate it and so on up the food chain to the carnivorous fish like barracuda. Local fishermen might be a good source of information for areas where catching barracuda for food would be considered safe.

When I'm kayak trolling offshore I use a similar diving lure as you, only it's not jointed. I also purchase them from China at a MUCH cheaper price. You will eventually loose some and the sting isn't as bad at $6 compared to U.S. prices of $20-30 per lure. Another lure that I like that doesn't drag through the water as bad as a diver is a 2oz bucktail jig (for offshore). Bucktail jigs have been around since at least the mid 1900s and still used today for good reason, they catch fish. If I catch a trash fish, I will often cut it up in small fillet strips and put a small strip of fillet on the hook of the bucktail. Fish CAN NOT RESIST IT.

After November 20 check out Jamaica. 1/2 mile offshore and you are deep sea fishing. Slip fees are the lowest in the caribbean. You get water, electricity, and free hot showers. Many of the all inclusives have private slips and moorings in sheltered coves. For very little money you can stay on your boat and get all the entertainment , free food, and free booze that people get while staying at the all inclusive.

I had barracuda at Walker's only because of Bahamian prepared it. I wouldn't eat it again as you do have a high chance of getting ciguatera. You're catching barracuda because your artificial's are at the surface and possibly going a little too fast. You have to get your lures below the barracuda otherwise that's all you'll catch. Excellent video none-the-less!

Barracudas are popular both as food and game fish. They are most often eaten as fillets or steaks. Larger species, such as the great barracuda, have been implicated in cases of ciguatera food poisoning. Those who have been diagnosed with this type of food poisoning display symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort, limb weakness, and an inability to differentiate hot from cold effectively. West Africans smoke them for use in soups and sauces. Smoking protects the soft flesh from disintegrating in the broth and gives it a smoky flavour.

I spent some time in the Bahamas (Great Exuma and Crooked Island) and rumor was that barracuda only made you sick because they will eat venomous or toxic fish and absorb the venom or toxins from the fish they eat, but are not venomous or toxic themselves. The locals could usually handle it for the most part, but they too would get one now and then that would make them ache all over, and the only way to fight it was to sit out in the hot sun and bake........which is a known way to reduce the effect of some venom's. We were told to only eat the small ones as they supposedly were not as bad as they hadn't absorbed as much venom or toxins as the older ones. I ate quite a few smaller ones and never had an issue.
