Great video! Once again, absolutely superb editing with this episode. I'm also particularly interested with the song choice being mostly MF DOOM, since I recently got into his music. I also never knew that FM was still being considered to make engines after the 60s.

Yup, still plenty of C40-8's rolling around up here on the former Pan Am. Sometimes the lashups on NS trains in Ayer MA get a bit odd when NS cant get an SD60E up here with ACSES PTC and they end up having to put one of the old Dash 8s on the front. Great and funny video! Great video The C-40-8 was my favorite locomotive to operate on CSX when it was in the lead of the consist The old control stand, was a plus over the desktop control stand on the dash 8’s. Never had a problem with the throttle powering out the 16 cylinder prime mover. The locomotive would dig in and keep pulling. The handle on the K5LA whistle gave you the cadence equine to other engineers!

Didn't Southern Pacific test them out at Tehachapi (sp) and the road was impressed enough to buy them? Have heard it said that those Dash-8s were instrumental in getting GE in the top position in sales of railroad locomotives. I think the hood unit, late 1980s GEs are the best looking engines they made.
@nowhere24718 ай бұрын
I don't really like to publicly nitpick but the Dash-8s didn't have the HDL engine. That was used for the AC6000. They still had the old FDL. Otherwise good video!

Interestingly, during the early days of CSXT, there was a faction of management unflatteringly referred to as the "Chessie Mafia" that opposed the initial purchase of these locomotives. The operations department had to go directly to then CSX CEO John W. Snow to get these units ordered.

Great video. An interesting thing about 9280, it never actually had the standard PTC you find on the rest of CSX. 9280 is only equipped with ACSES PTC, which is used mainly on passenger railroads in the northeast, including the MBTA which Pan Am ran on a lot. Most of Pan Am's locomotives were equipped with it, including 7627. But, when it got repainted, the unit never actually got standard PTC, and it to this day only has ACSES, which is why you never see it leading outside New England. CSX today only has (to my knowledge) two widecab Dash 8s left active, which are on very short time now. Many of Pan Am's Dash 8s recently got sold to the new startup shortline Berkshire & Eastern and the remaining ones are still active on former Pan Am trackage that CSX still owns. 9280 has now rejoined the Pan Am units in New England and will probably stay there until more newer power arrives to replace them.

That explains why 9280 has been running around up there in the NE recently. Its nice to know that CSX didnt sell the rest of them off and gave them away. 9280 says its still on the roster, but I guess that may have changed while I was working on the video.
@yeahman708 ай бұрын
@@buccaneerrailfanning1776 it is still on the roster, it’s just operating on the former Pan Am right now. The MEC Dash 8s are still owned by CSX. The Berkshire & Eastern took over operations of the Pan Am Southern in September and they bought some of the MEC Dash 8s but not all of them
