Another slight nitpick (sorry). So CSXT/B&O 8595 was the last of 20 units assigned to the B&O before it was merged into CSXT. The merger with the C&O, which took place back in 1963, did not end B&O's corporate existence. That didn't happen until April 30, 1987. The Chessie System was a holding company and not itself a rail entity. The SD50:s that ended up being assigned to the B&O (as well as the C&O and SBD) were ordered by its parent company CSX Corp. which came into being on November 1st, 1980 by the merging of Chessie System Inc. and Seaboard Coast Line Industries.

EMD should have used a larger engine(whether it be a V-16 design that was larger the the V-16 on the 40-2, or a V18 still efficient enough to compete with the Dash 7s. That’s exactly how the SD80MAC worked and the 90 didn’t. The case of the SD50 is the equivalent of trying to make a 70MAC put out 5,000 horsepower.
@Slim_Slid
@Slim_Slid 2 жыл бұрын
The 645 V20's in the SD45's were a nightmare.The weight of the engine block caused stress on the frames over time due to vibration and that's why they always had fractures.They were notorious for damaging crankshafts too.That's why most of them were rebuilt as SD45R's and SD40M-2's with 645 V16's just like the SD40-2's. For the 645 powered locomotives,anything more massive than a V16 never worked,the SD45's are a prime example of that. The SD50's just like the GP50's would've been fine if EMD didn't try to maximise the horsepower rating on them.Two stroke diesel engines constantly run at high RPM no matter what,too much horsepower but not enough displacement is asking for trouble.They also have a difficult time intaking air and that's why EMD has always used roots blowers on their prime movers. That entire situation is why EMD debuted the 710 V16's,starting with the GP60's & SD60's being the first to have them at 3,800 HP in comparison to the pushed 645 V16's that had 3,600 HP. The -7's from GE weren't that great either,they had enough power but not enough traction and that is why they repeatedly had wheel slippage,espiecally on any consist.It was difficult to have them on a manifest unless another locomotive was used as a supporter or buffer in the lead area,or simply there is just a mash up of power to supply enough traction effort. The SD80MAC's all had 710 V20's and have been the only successful locomotives with the highest horsepower and using twenty cylinders. The GE AC6000CW's were only good for a short time because they continuously had back pressure errors on the turbochargers and needed replacements every three months.The SD90MAC's before being derated into SD9043MAC's,then rebuilt now as SD70ACU's,were rushed just like the GP50's & SD50's because EMD was too eager to stay in competition with GE.This caused dislike in their partnership with GM who was their affiliation and subsidiary for many years.

Not sure about the RPM info mentioned in the video. The figures were 904 RPM maximum and 318 RPM min. The sixteen cylinder 645 had a max RPM 950 and an idle speed of 210 RPM. One of the reason for the engines reliability problems was the increase of the max RPMs by 50.

I don't think the trucks were self-steering. They were slightly modified versions of the classic HT-C, but not self-steering. Also you listed C&O, B&O *and* "Cheese System" as original purchasers, but you're double counting as the C&O and B&O were the Chessie System.

The C&NW had 35 of them as well the UP did not renew the lease on the SD50s in 2002 they instead bought 500 more flared radiator SD70M to the first 1000 they got in 1999 the SD50 was the prototype to the new 710 SD60 which was the birth of a 710 prime mover and that saved EMD but when the GEs get older they become junk and retire most of them while EMD lasts longer
@Slim_Slid
@Slim_Slid 5 ай бұрын
Actually,the GE units have been lasting longer than EMD units for more than thirty years. The GP60's & SD60's helped EMD recover but the GE -8's proved to be better on tractive effort,dynamic braking,and the introduction of microprocessors and wheel slippage prevention. The problem with EMD units and higher horsepower is the fact that the motors have always been two stroke. Two stroke diesels at some point require increases in displacement in order to strongly perform with higher horsepower. That's exactly what happened with the 645F3's in the GP50's & SD50's. The EPA regulations discontinued EMD motors because of high carbon footprint. However ALCO & GE never had that issue because of being four stroke,better power at lower RPM and less displacement,while GE was always more technologically advanced. EMD's last mistake was building the SD90MAC's which was far worse than what happened with the GP50's & SD50's. The worst leading into that was CAT/PRLX buying EMD. EMD units get retired and just remain in storage or get scrapped. GE units have been getting more rebuilds done thanks to Wabtec Relco taking over the company. The last great units were the EMD GP40-2's & SD40-2's which have survived and outlived everything else. GE is practically the way of the future,not EMD anymore.

Love your videos big CSX fan here and I agree they can be annoying sometimes lol. SD50 is one of my favorite locomotives and especially in the Chessie System paint scheme I have several in my collection. Chessie system was formed in 1973 by the merger of the C&O, B&O and Western Maryland. In 1980 Chessie merged with the seaboard coast line to form CSX but the railroads still operated independently until 1987 when it officially became CSX and all the engines started to be repainted. I remember as a kid seeing lots of chessie system locomotives as well as seaboard. In your video you mention that some of the Chessie sd50’s were C&O and some were B&O, whenever Chessie system ordered new locomotives they always ordered a certain amount B&O and C&O. As was the case with the SD50 and I know after 1987 CSX took delivery of of some painted in YN2. Anyway sorry to ramble look forward to watching more of your videos!
