Here's the good side of the Net. I'm not a handy man like you Matt and Sophie - I'm not really worthless either, so if I ever try to do sth fanzy about my cb500 I know now where to start :)

Thanks 😊 the cb500 is a great bike to work on 👍

So scary cutting into a frame like that. Well done!

Great to see you guys picking up the spanners again, it's been a while. Loving the bike project! Just a little hint/advice from me having owned a few Honda's of that era and having broken down a few times due to rectifier failures... change that rectifier for an upgraded one with cooling fins! You don't want to break down in the snow on the way to work or 300 miles from home during the wettest summer on record... true stories. You can pick up the genuine Honda ones on fleabay for about £70 or sell a kidney to buy from Honda directly. You could go a step further and relocate it in the cooler air in front of the engine to prolong it's life. Good luck with the project, looking forward to seeing it pan out.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely look for an upgraded rectifier 👍

Can't imagine how nervous you must have been making those cuts into the frame. Grip it and rip it!

Think if you plump the seat out a little with some extra padding it should conform to the shape of the support hoop better!
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness4 жыл бұрын
That could work. I think is the frame is perfectly flat, making a new seat base shouldn't be too hard, and then it'll definitely fit 👍

was just thinking this is going pretty smooth, dont have to deal with rust or stripped/snapped bolts. spoke too soon

Yeah, we shouldn’t be surprised really. The bike’s 22 years old, done over 50k miles, and was ridden all year round in coastal England. If that’s the only rust repair I think we got off lightly 😆

It’s starting to look like you’re getting there. I would have plugged the hoop before welding though, that’s generally the safest option especially with a flux core arc welder, those welds won’t be the best on a mix of old rust penetrated metal, but it’s not majorly structural of course. It’s a shame the CB frame is box section. Are you planning on dry building before stripping back for paint/powder coat ? I look forward to seeing how this turns out as I’ll probably be learning from it for my own CB. I may have to start on mine before you’ve finished but I’m definitely liking the fact you are attacking this bike, there isn’t a whole load of 93-02 CB500 stuff on KZbin so we’ll done for bringing this to the fore 😁

I considered adding plugs, but decided against it as the hoop is so far back it won’t be at all load bearing, and the plugs would have to bend to match the hoop radius. And of course the box section frame makes it more challenging. Our welder does use shielding gas, you just can’t see the bottle as it’s on the floor next to the work bench 😊 Definitely gonna do a full dry build before getting it powder coated.

@@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness ah right I wasn’t sure if your welder did as there seemed to be a lot of spatter. Mine is awful, tbh a flux core isn’t much more than a fancy arc welder, so I think it’s time to upgrade. Look forward to your next instalment when you get the time 😁

Yes indeed, not sure if we’ll keep it stock black, or go with a different colour though.
