It was my main to go amp for years, used in a lot of gigs. Very reliable and sounded amazing with any cabs, cut thru the mix, had never a problem to hear myself, very inexigent. Didn't really need to boost it with an od, is super fast enough. Hasn't got a lot of bass, but can do anything, from alter pop to extreme grindcore. Ritchie Blackmore is a god, and so are his gears.

I've been using that amp for 11 years now (time flies). I've found that on Channel 4 (lead) setting it to 4 gain 6 bass 7.5 mids, 2.5 highs, 6 presence with a TS-9 (0 gain 10 output) with my EII Eclipse (stock), through a mesa cab. I leave that mid boost off though, it doesn't feel right for rhythm stuff. It was neat to see how you use it! Skol!

Great playing as always Euge. That ENGL back to back with the Bad Boy sounded so thin, but sounded pretty good by itself. I was surprised how harsh the SD-1 made it sound. Got my SD-1 I ordered with you link last week. Surprised how good it sounded compared to my old Japan one, pretty much exactly the same. Have a good week my friend. You're killing it with your content and the vidography is looking great 🤘🤘

Thanks! Yeah that pretty much happens with all amps: they sound really good and then when I fire up the Bad Boy it’s like ”Oh yeah, there’s a reason why this is my all time favourite amp” 😎. I have Japan & Taiwan made SDs and honestly I can’t tell the difference especially when boosting already an overdriven amp.

@@EugeValovirta230V I laughed when you said "Bad boy is bad boy". Really, night and day difference. I'd guess the Engl is pretty mixing-friendly and you could pair it with a really thick bass, but on its own, yeah, not my favorite.

Your skill and ability never ceases to amaze! I always find it interesting how people hear things differently. Reading the other comments about the Engl that range from thin-sounding to sounding great and I'm going to fall in the thin-sounding camp. But, of course, I'm a Marshall disciple. In my opinion the Marshalls have a more soulful and organic feel and tone to them. The cleans on the Engl sounded surprisingly good (Fender-ish) though. My rule of thumb...Tube Screamer with a Fender (6L6) and SD-1 with Marshall (EL34/6550).

thats the mids. Engls have a more mid scooped nature. Engls lean more towards the metal crowd with a tight quicker response then lets say marshalls. They are more focused and tight then raw and lose sounding. I personally prefer engl's for this nature. But it's all taste and none are really bad.

He’s just The GOAT ... first time I saw him on a video tape back in the mid 90s, I got that Rainbow live at Munich 77... I was like “OMG he’s so cool, and he uses a strat too!” I was so down because all my different metal players used humbuckers... he’s been such an influence for me since then... and then back in the early 2000s he made me fall in love with acoustics again after hearing Blackmore’s Night... the amp sounds awesome BTW 🙂 great video 👍🏽

For Engls you don't need a Boost-/Overdrive Pedal! @tommiaapaoja29343 жыл бұрын
This was a familiar one :) I have one and played it for years with strat + 'channel 3', with a Mad Professor Little Green Wonder turned on for leads, with a quite warm and midheavy speaker cabinet. I feel that my particular amp has a bit warmer and bigger sound, but that might just be down to tubes or whatever; the original tubes are long gone from mine. My amp is an older one (I wasn't even aware of a version 2), without a noise gate. I wonder if they changed the treble pot curve too, the treble rarely goes above 10 o'clock on mine. And that's something that was common to some other ENGLs too, at least back then. Presence I keep higher. Never really bonded with channel 2, but I need to give that a new shot after watching this. It's been many, many moons since I even turned that on. And I do agree on the mids, the pot never goes below noon on mine :) Being a happy owner of an old Marshall 2204 too, they are different in the mid character. Great work, as always!

This is a great comparation clip . Very hard to choose . To my ears the Marshall JCM800 sounds bigger , fuller sound , a lot more mids great choice for 80's style of metal i think , but it can sound a bit mushy with the wrong settings . The Engl Blackmore sounds clearer , more articulation between notes ant has that tight low end response , but not as big as the JCM800 and has way less mids , and also with wrong settings can sound thin (the Engl) . But i think the Engl would be a great amp for 1995 - 2000 power metal / modern metal type of music . So if I would have to choose one of this amps i would choose Marshall JCM 800 for 80's metal and old school heavy metal like Iron Maiden / Judas Priest , and the Engl Blackmore for 1995 - 2000 power metal / modern metal type of music like Helloween , Stratovarius , Gamma Ray etc. For the Y.J. Malmsteen sound i would always choose the Plexi . \m/

Thanks! Yeah I’ve used Fireball 60 on both Cyhra’s albums along with a 5150 and it works great. IMO JCM800 2203 is one of the rare amps that works great on anything / any style 😎👌.

Your playing and reviews are always great. The amp sounds great as well. But it does not sound anything like Blackmore. Maybe it would if they sold it with a hand transplant. But I am sure that would greatly increase the cost and I am also highly doubtful Ritchie would agree to that in the first place. All that said, the old school Marshall sounded pretty damn close to Blackmore compared to the Engl to my ears. Night and day difference between the amps. Older guitar heroes often gravitate toward less bass and more gain in their tone as their ears get blown out over years of punishment from loud amps. Same deal with EVH and many others.

Thanks! Yeah that’s pretty obvious 👌. And nobody would like me with the amp. Or any amp / gear. Not even Blackmore 😎.

I used to own an engl gigmaster a decade ago. It was an ok entry-level amp, but severely lacked in the mids, and the quality wasn't that great, had it repaired twice while on the warranty, then got rid of it. I should give the credit where it's due, the amp designer Horst Langer did get in touch with me to discuss the issues that I've had had with the amp, still the amp sucked big time.

you push the treble and presence too much on the engl try with presence at 9 o clock and treble between 9 and 10 o clock also you don't need that amount of bass

The ENGL Ritchie Blackmore amp sound awful way to much bass or its that cabinet it has that death metal bass chugging sound which doesn't go well with classic rock deep purple. I think you mentioned in the video that the ENGL amps is lower volume and the midrange set at half way only at 5 to a marshall set at level 10 volume and midrange is at max 12. I think what you're saying is that the ENGL is much louder more wattage even set at lower volume and has more tone control headroom compared to marshall. I'm guessing Richie Blackmore but in 6L6 in his marshall because the ENGL clean channel is using 6L6 and it sounded like Richie Blackmore has that fenderish tone with the strat. Using marshall plexi with EL34 can't get that clean Richie Blackmore tone so I think he used 6L6 when his marshall amps.
@EugeValovirta230V3 жыл бұрын
The ENGL had a lot less low end than my Bad Boy but I gues it’s in the ”ear of the beholder” eventually 😁.

@@EugeValovirta230V Are you using a different speaker cab because it sounds way different than your marshall heads it has the horrible chugging tone. ENGL using a normal 30 watt greenback speakers or something might sound better. Have you tried 6L6 in your marshall plexi that it might sound like Richie Blackmoore clean tones? I think those 6L6 make the marshall plexi sound more like a fender?

@@EugeValovirta230V Have you tried out the FORTIN Mini GRIND pedal? because this makes a normal marshall plexi into a metallica or Exodus type tones. Metallica played Battery on the Late Show 2021 and James rhythm tone was really good. I think this Fortin Grind pedal with a 10 band EQ pedal gets that tone.
