Despite taking the lead through a tremendous Graeme Le Saux goal, England are beaten 3-1 at Wembley by Brazil in June 1995 as emerging talents such as Ronaldo and Juninho shine. The result means the World Cup holders lift the Umbro Cup, which Sweden and Japan also contested, and condemns Terry Venables to his only defeat from open play in charge of England (although they had been losing away to Republic of Ireland when their match was abandoned).

Yeah I was too. I remember the Brazilian fans took up a small corner of the stadium and were banging drums the whole game. Even when going 1-0 down. It’s was amazing to see. I was at this game in the Brazil end with my mum and auntie (both from Lon Drina) When le saux hit that shot I was like shit that's going in... but to have been lucky enough to seen Ronaldo and watch him off the ball to this day I have never seen anyone just boom the world scene the way he did... Ah memories! Also noticed during thr lineup graphics they didn't put the 4th World Cup star on, tut tut sky! Still have this recorded on vhs and watched it the second we got home from the game :)

Not really, England's qualification for USA 94 ended in November 1993, a year and a half before (that matters in football, a lot can change in such a period, and certainly did for England in terms of personnel), and I think you will find the line up was significantly different- not to mention the manager. Besides which, the game looked reasonably competitive from these highlights. Not a good England performance, but the scoreline could easily have been closer. Pearce played well offensively and was unfortunate to only hit the woodwork late on, after working hard to help get that particular attack going. Moreover your assertion that Brazil were mostly under-21s players is incorrect, they cannot have been- only Ronaldo was actually 21 or younger, and 2 others were a couple of years older than that (Juninho and Roberto Carlos), and the majority of the team was much older. I haven't bothered researching whether or not any of this line up had been playing in under-21 fixtures in the time period, but no more than two or three over 21s are allowed in such squads, so your statement simply cannot be true, not even close. Ronaldo, despite his young age, had even been at USA 94, though I don't think he played. Much of the rest of this line up had also been part of that world cup winning squad; Zetti, Aldair, Marcio Santos, Jorginho, Dunga, Zinho. In other words, just over half the starting line up!

markstrugnell: a bit of a harsh comment there. The turning point for English football was during Euro 96 when out of the blue, England demolished Holland. Yes it was @ home BUT in front of the world's media and in a major footballing competition, the 4-0 result was totally unexpected and really rekindled the nation's interest in the national team. England would later go onto be unlucky NOT to win the tournament. If they had beaten Germany in that semi finial, surely England @ home would have beaten the Cheze Republic in the finial. The World Cup squad for France 98 was a fucking good and strong squad. Again, unlucky a young and immature D.Beckham lost his head a got sent off against Argentina . 10 very brave, focused and determined lions took that game all the ways to penalties. They could have done no more.

Not harsh at all. From 92 to 97 England were awful. Euro 92 didn’t win a game WC 94 didn’t qualify Other than a few games at Euro 96 they were pretty poor in 95/96/97 The Umbro cup and the tour of Japan England were dreadful. Even at Euro 96 they played well against Holland but apart from that they were pretty poor. WC 98 yes they started to turn a corner.
