Love these 3 fellas as a team, they always make me laugh as they have the sarcastic humour that suits me perfectly. This is quickly becoming my favourite podcast channel. As for England, well....... I think modern football, and in particular this group of players, have outgrown Southgate, he's tactically inept and his coaching staff are incapable of getting the best out of this talent packed squad, which is unacceptable. Southgate is a PR man so the FA should give him a role within the England set up and they should then bring in a manager who fully understands modern football. Southgate and his staff are totally out of touch with the players we have and their squad selection just baffled me to be honest. Yes, its great to see that there are a lot of exciting new players but you still have to have experienced players within the squad, especially in the midfield, and we only have Declan Rice, who can't do everything on his own. So, to the English FA, I say "Go and get a modern, forward thinking manager who is bold, brave and technically clever........ if we want an Englishman, go and get Eddie Howe, if we're not bothered where he comes from, go and get a manager like Jurgen Klopp."
@VoiceOfThe3 ай бұрын
Let’s stop beating around the bush here and call this out. Nothing, I repeat nothing will change until Southgate leaves. He plays the wrong formation and system for starters. The fundamental catalyst for all the problems discussed here is how Southgate approaches a football game - he plays not to lose, rather than plays to win. You don’t achieve anything in life, let alone football with this approach. He has to leave... and hopefully this will happen in the next few weeks when we get knocked out.

A lot of England's problems, I think, are connected to their style of play. We (all British football fans because I'm Scottish) demand the quick pass, effort, effort, effort, run fast, jump high, keep moving......and it produces national teams that value physicality more than technique and having the brains to control games. I'd like to see teams that varied their play more and played through midfield a bit more. Basically, I wish we were a bit more Spanish in our football culture. But that's a long term wish. As for this current tournament: Scotland were better in the second game and should be happy to have a chance to go through. They know they need a win which is better than wondering about other results. I think they were making a few silly challenges though against the Swiss and it was heart-in-mouth stuff at times after the sending off in the first game. As with England, our midfield hasn't looked quite right either. The second game should surely cement Gilmour deeper in midfield and keeping McTominay in a more advanced position. Long term there, I'm not convinced by 3 at the back, but I don't expect any formation changes during this tournament. Clarke will play.... Gunn -- Ralston, Hendry, Hanley, McKenna, Robertson -- Gilmour, McGregor -- McTominay, McGinn -- Adams And then it's about subs as there must be tired legs among that lot. England. Positives - they've been more defensively sound than I feared they might. Guehi has done well, mostly. I'd make changes for the third game. Not 11 changes but I'd definitely rest 4 or 5, with an eye on trying to stretch teams a bit. I think they've got too many players who want to play in a similar area, and they could do with a player stretching things there, as Bowen did immediately when he came on in the first game. Pickford - Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier - Mainoo, Rice, Wharton - Palmer, Watkins, Gordon I'd play the subs for various reasons. The first choice players haven't really performed. I suspect some have heavy legs and would benefit from a rest. Kane and Bellingham could be given 20 minutes at the end to keep them ticking over and Stones, Rice and Trippier could do with coming off after the hour. And I don't really believe in looking ahead at draws and trying to figure out who you might play because that often goes in ways you don't predict and then you are playing a team you've very obviously shown yourself wanting to avoid. Better just to do your thing and take on whoever you get. Since they are through, I'd risk being criticised for playing reserves against Slovenia because I think there's a strong case for it. Despite the concerns I'd much rather have us (Scotland) there than not, and England fans just have to hope that things kick into gear. He'll surely rest players in the next game so that should freshen things up a bit and might bring some optimism.

I read the first few lines of what you said I remind myself of what the Germans called the English in the 90s "kick and rush". British football teams will never play with flair and finesse its not in the culture. The English team style wish is on the same level as the Scandinavian teams.

Mate i've been saying the exact same thing, and as soon as England produces anyone technically half decent they're overhyped as star boys. The problem with the British style is that it only works in the Premier League. It doesn't work in international football where teams sit back and give you time and space, and soak up all the effort and running that you throw at them. You need players that can make the ball do all the work. This is a reason why England gets so anxious and worried about formations and team selections, because when you lack 'technicians' it feels like only so many few combinations can work for you. The Brits tend to be athletes first and foremost and then footballers, whereas the opposite is predominately true on the continent.

Shocking performance, everyone is saying it but HIGH PRESS ffs, like most of them do for their club. There's a photo floating around showing the average position of the England team for 15 minutes after we scored and it's so deep it's unreal! (on reddit in the EUROS sub, if anyone wants to see it)
@billybobthornton96683 ай бұрын
Primarily Kane's fault, jogging up to players out of possession and dropping too deep in possession. Both contributed to Denmark playing straight through our first line and enabled them to push their defensive line higher. As a consequence, our midfielders didn't have space to get their heads up to pick incisive passes, and we were instead forced to shuffle the ball to the next man at pace to escape their press. We looked a lot better with Watkins up front because he was threatening in behind and initiating aggressive presses high up the pitch. The problem was that we were without Trent to pick him out when he ran in behind. That's not to say that Trent would have been some kind of silver bullet to make us cohesive, but it just seemed a bit mad to take him off and then bring Watkins on, rather than giving them at least a few minutes to play together to exploit the high Danish line 🤷

What Greame is saying about Rice dropping 15 yards and having it off his centre-half, then knocking it 5, is what Mark Noble did for years at West Ham. I was convinced Noble was doing it just to get his stats up. He’d have the ball off a defender, who’d played international football and won trophies and knock 5 yards inside and have it back and knock it 5 to the fullback. It’s the defenders job to fuck him off out of there. Tell him that he’s not needed. Rice is only doing the same blag he saw Noble do for years.

To lose at home to Iceland, scrape a win against Serbia and draw to an average Denmark side in the last 3 games and think we’re gonna win the Euros is laughable. The players look lost, scared and lethargic. There is no shape, no balance, no patterns of play. We have an embarrassment of riches to pick from, yet in our starting 11, 3 players are not playing in their natural positions. We have started the last 2 games with 3 natural Right Backs on the pitch. I doubt Southgate has the nerve to tell Kane to pull his finger out and stay up top. Why on earth is Tyrick Mitchell not even in the provisional squad? Solid, natural left back, yet Southgate plays a RB at LB and takes an injured LB as backup. Sackable offence.

He plays for a team where 75% of the games they play are a walkover. Playing him on the left wing is NOT out of position. The same cannot be said about Trent. Everyone is hypnotised because of his ball playing ability. But we’re only hypnotised by it because he’s a right back And right backs with his ability don’t exist, but midfielders do and as a midfielder he’s bang average in comparison. When he’s played in midfield for Liverpool he’s playing against sheff Utd and Luton. He never got played there against Villa or Arsenal or city.
@Cafez273 ай бұрын
This isn’t true, Foden is at his most effective central, which is where he played most of minutes last season for City. If anything he has a right side bias cutting in to unleash that left foot. There are 4 players being played out position depending on the plan. Bellingham is NOT a 10, in 2 games he has made 10 passes into the final third, only 1 against Denmark, he is making 0.5 key passes per game, his xA is 0.33 and has lost possession 10 times…..he is NOT a 10. He is an 8, which is where he effectively plays for Madrid with a left side bias. Foden is also being played out of position. He is clearly being asked to hold that width but that is simply not his game. Great example is the first minute of the Denmark game, Foden comes in field on the first attack, we turn possession over the there is acres of space for Denmark to run into and create the first chance of the game. We all know Trent is being played out of position, so enough said, the poor performances aren’t his fault. To Declan, I’m an Arsenal fan, and he had the worst game I’ve seen from him in years. Why, in part because he was effectively and one man midfield, neither Jude nor Trent did any defensive work, their positional play was simply terrible, which saw Rice being dragged all across the back line. I would also say Declan is not a world class player at platforming attacks, he is a world class transition killer and driver with the ball. Mikel deploys him as an 8/b2b player, he doesn’t have the line break capability Rodri has. So what’s the answer, it is blatantly obvious, we have to platform our best players, Jude needs to play alongside Declan, with a license to go forward selectively, but he MUST not dominate the ball, let Foden do that in the 10 role, he is way better than Jude in that role. Play Gordon on the left, he is a natural LW with PACE and will play to Kanes strengths as he will get service and we have an over the top ball option. Saka stays RW, he is by a mile the best in that position, BUT we have to platform him. So far it’s been all about accommodating Jude, we have to platform our 4 best players properly, but playing them in their right positions. Subs if things need changing up, simple, Palmer for Foden, Wharton for Jude, we should have e Grealish as an option for Gordon it’s a scandal he isn’t there!!! This isn’t difficult unless seemingly your name is Gareth Southgate!!!

Who remembers Nicky Butt’s performances at the 2002 world cup? That’s what we need from Mainoo or Wharton. Gallagher isn’t the man for the role and neither is Bellingham. It means dropping Foden to the bench and starting Gordon on the left. All will fall into place.

No doubt Southgate will leave at the end of this tournament but if people really believe that will mean England will instantly become better under a new manager they are dreaming. Since 1966 England have had some very good managers like Greenwood, Robson, Venables , Eriksson, Capello and none of them have been able to get some very good players to consistently play at their best. We need to look at the players not just the manager if we are ever going to win anything.

For about 5 minutes we looked like something that resembled a team, it was the 5 minutes where Foden said 'F this, I'm going deep' but that was it. Southgate, the bum, probably told Foden to go back to the left. The shape is all wrong, it's not too dissimilar to United under ETH with a gigantic gap in the middle. Trent and Rice ae stood on the CB's toes, neither of them can play in tight spaces so they're just getting in each other's way. Meanwhile we have bighead Bellingham playing wherever the hell he feels like it, Foden and Saka both stranded out wide not getting the ball, and Kane coming deep far too often. It's a mess and it's on Southgate, he has been in charge for how long now and still we don't play as a team. Maybe, just maybe, ask Stones to move into CM when we have the ball and bring in a wide player for Trent - I'd rather see Trent on the RW and Sake on the left if put an end to this double pivot DM. And tell Pickford he is playing for England now, not Dyche's Everton, he needs to stop punting it long. Get Foden on the right of the two 8's and Bellingham on the left of the two 8's. Allow Foden to get in positions to shoot from distance. They both need to be close to Kane. These 3 are the best trio in this tournament and yet Southgate keeps them apart because he think's he's still the Boro manager

Southgate's "plan-A" is a cautious 4-2-3-1, and his "plan-B" is a cautious 4-2-3-1 - there's no "plan-C". He is tactically inept and unable to change and adapt to what opposition is doing during the game. All substitutions are like-for-like. Apart from muttering a few things to Steve Holland, you never see any coaching or instruction from the sidelines. It is absolutely criminal that we allow an FA "yes-man" with no history of success to be anywhere near this fantastic squad of players. Unless he goes, we will never win anything.
