Greetings from the good ol' U.S. of A! Really enjoying the channel. I've been a football fan since we hosted the World Cup in '94, and always wanted to know more about the history of the game. Not just the broad strokes, mind you, but the people & places. The wonderful details. I don't have the means to travel to the U.K. for games, so I'll live vicariously through your adventures for now. What's your favourite match you've ever attended? For me, it was the USA Women's gold medal match from the '96 Olympics. They held it in the Georgia Bulldogs football stadium(yes, that kind of football), and I was in the first row of the upper deck. Unforgettable experience.

Great Video! Glad you enjoyed Berkshire Reading also won the Full-Members cup in 1988, it was called the Simod Cup. The proper title of the Papa Johns trophy is the Associate Members cup, for teams on Level 3/4. The Full Members cup was for level 1/2. Not having European Football in the 80's opened up the calendar for these types of tournaments. Reading Beat Luton 4-1 in the final but in the semi final Michael Gilkes scored the latest ever goal timed at 10.38pm. The following year Reading were the earliest team to make it through the fist round of the League Cup as they got a bye because Maidstone went into liquidation. Other Clubs in Berkshire - I dont know if Wexham Park, Slough is still standing or if its abandoned? Waterside Park in Thatcham, who won the FA Vase a year before last. There is also a poignant memorial to the Hunger massacre near Bulpit Lane in Hungerford - I'll let you explain the significance of York Road, Maidenhead in your video as you will do it better than I can! Abingdon used to be the county town of Berkshire, probably famous for having two teams in such a small area! Its a common myth that Reading (and Preston) dont need an away kit as they are in the Royal County (and Preston won the league first) - I have never spoken to anybody who said that this actually true.

Reading were known as 'The Biscuitmen,' because next to the old ground, 'Elm Park,' Huntley and Palmer Biscuit Factory was there. I had trials there and you can smell sweet aroma of biscuits wrafting through the ground.
@jonlinin96822 жыл бұрын
Huntley and Palmers used to have their own club. They played in the Spartan League in the 1960s and entered the FA Cup over 20 times. I played on their ground in the 70s and you could actually see the main Elm Park stand from the pitch.

Reading still hold two records, most wins from start of a season, 13. And the highest points tally in a season, 106, only lost two games in that 2005-6 season, the first game at home to Plymouth and the second game Luton away 3-2 despite leading after 18 seconds
@luxford602 жыл бұрын
The first league game to actually be attended by a Royal was at Clapton Orient (now Leyton Orient) way back in 1921 whrn the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) came to a home game against Notts County. His brother the Duke of York (later King George VI) came to a game a few years later. Not in Berkshire obviously.

Maidenhead's ground, York St., is one of the oldest in England as it was used for cricket before football, starting in the late 1700's I believe.

Great video mate, I’m a Reading fan from Bracknell. Ascot, Windsor and all the places you went to is home. Bracknell had a lovely stadium until some local business men bought the club and quickly got planning permission to build on the land, 100’s of years for history down the drain, they ground share with Camberley 10 or so miles away but the towns essentially without a club now. It’s a great County for football but being so close to London most locals support the bigger teams from the city hence Readings pretty small attendances

As a subscriber and Celtic Fan I Can't believe you were in this part of the world today. A recomondation for you if you visit Maidenhead. The club runs a competion for local clubs called the Maidenhead Norfolkian Cup which is the oldest trophy in English football still played for today, Also Take in Slough Town a club with FA Cup Giant killing History That play in Conference South and apart from their present stadium is their old abandoned stadium almost behind their present one.

In high school, we visited Harrow School... My high school in Denmark, is also seen as a posh school, being Denmark's oldest school. I ended up bringing my new cricket bat due to some delay on the Tube, so I had no time to go back to our hotel in Chelsea, before we had to go to Harrow on the day, Harrow and Eton were playing cricket at Lord's... I watched some of the match on a big screen telly in the Lounge at Harrow Sports Centre 😉

I’m from Sandhurst. Grew up there and went to school nearby. I’m a Reading fan. Last game I went to see was v Arsenal in the FA Cup Semi Final, where Reading lost in extra time, 2-1. The game was played at Wembley Sandhurst would be well worth a visit. Not much there. You’ll find the Recreation Ground, where you’ll find lots of football pitches as well as Sandhurst Town, and Bracknell Town. It’s all about the community. Football teams from wee children up to senior level. Sandhurst was also Tug of War world champions I myself now live in Glasgow, and have done since 2011. I’ve kinda switched to ice hockey, though I am looking for a lower league/junior league team to follow. I won’t support Rangers or Celtic. I’ve been to both. It’s bad enough being English 😉 Keep up the good work Sam. All the best

On the contrary, I don't follow some English sports such as cricket or horse racing. With one single exception. City of Pardubice is 70 kilometers from the city where I live. And Pardubice are famous for its horse racing, which is attended by jockeys from all over the world. And even the Pardubice hockey club has a horse in its bedge thanks to this. So even though I don't watch horse racing, once a year I watch a horse race in Pardubice and it's interesting.
