I mean, England can rightfully feel unlucky in this match. But there are moments where you could say they let it slip, perhaps they were a tad arrogant at times. Neither side had been dominant until this test match. All three of the first tests could have gone either way. And in hindsight, maybe England may have had a better chance if they hadn’t batted as long as they did (surprisingly un-bazball tactics really). Of course, you can’t fully blame that, you can’t be certain about the weather. If Australia had played better, the match probably would have been a draw anyway. And credit to Australia, they could well have lost it on day four. They batted well and got lucky with the bad light forcing England to bowl spin. I’ve seen Australia lose from that position, so it’s not entirely luck based. Still extremely lucky, don’t get me wrong, but credit where credit is due.

All of this speculation about who has been the better team throughout the series has ignored two key variables. Home ground advantage and the toss. I've seen numbers suggesting home ground advantage in test cricket being worth somewhere between a 15-20 percent higher chance of winning. No idea how accurate that is but would not surprise me at all. Coin toss is harder to evaluate, and I'm not smart enough to properly contextualize this, but I saw figures suggesting teams that win the toss win 40% of matches to the losers 35%. So let's say that's another 5% advantage. Which means England have started each test this series with a 20% or more greater chance of winning once the coin toss came up in their favor. So if the teams were 50/50 in the first test, then accounting for their handicap, Australia were clearly the better team. Even more so for the second test. The third test had England maybe five to ten percent better, but take away their 20% advantage and Australia were the better team by at least 10 percent. The same logic tempers their much stronger performance in the 4th test from a drubbing to a merely comfortable lead. I know these figures are rubbery and hypothetical, but you get my point. This of course applies both ways, if England can draw a series in Australia next time they're down, it would be seen as a massive achievement.

I’d say the toss is far less significant in England than in most other other countries though - it’s usually pretty even as to whether you should bat or bowl, and there can be a number of tosses which go in your favour where you lose. In Aus or India it’s far more significant
@JohnHenrySMH
@JohnHenrySMH Жыл бұрын
@@jtfc7286 I don't know about that, the amount of times England have been able to bowl under heavy skies on green seamers, only for the sun to come out and the pitch to turn into a road the next day makes me think that at least for the home team there is a huge upside to winning the toss. Add to that England's modern preference for chasing in the fourth innings and I'd say the toss is a major factor. Harder for the visiting team to know what to choose, but that feeds back into the whole home team advantage.

Think people have forgotten, England have won every toss, had the best of the batting and bowling conditions in every match, yet are 2-1 down. Everyone saying England is the better side. I look at it as Australia found a way to win and England found a way to lose. This match, if Stokes was so confident, he should have declared when England were 100 runs in front. Simple as that. An extra session on day 3 would have made the difference. Just to add, so sick of the English whining. I remember in 2013 when rain robbed the Aussies a chance of a win at Manchester with England at 3/37, and both Broad and Collingwood tweeted that it was great to have the Ashes and were happy for the rain. Now they are crying about it. Poms, always whining.

Great comment. Does anyone really think that if this series had been played in Aus that it would be competitive? At best we'd be talking about how England had some rainy help in Sydney to clutch another draw & avoid yet another 5-0 drubbing. England are playing at home. If they're as good as they seem to think they are, they should be DOMINATING Aus. Instead they've had all the luck in the world up until now, but the 1st time luck has gone against them it has cost them a game and the series. Great teams don't lose home series because one test gets washed out.

@smintol It's kinda true though. Legally you can't be found guilty of derogatory comments or defamation if what you're saying is the truth. And you can't deny there has been a monumental amount of whining, it's probably the most I've ever seen in an Ashes series. The debacle at Lords is indefensible, and yet you tried desperately to shift the blame and moaned endlessly when it didn't work. Some of you are STILL whining about that. You Poms are a bunch of whiners, the "whinging Pom" is part of the social lexicon of Australian culture. You used to be a nation of stiff upper lips and determination, oh boy how that's changed. Instead of rolling your sleeves up you just have a cry in your tea and make sure everyone knows it. You could win a world war now by nagging Hitler to death with whining. Maybe just maybe England should have ordered a 2-day Brisbane green minefield pitch here knowing that the last two days of this Test were going to be washed out, rather than the flatdeck where 'King Krawli' edged his way to an 'epic' 180 odd. Or maybe they should have rolled out their usual greendecks in the first two Tests rather than ordering doctored slow, horrible highways. In addition to all the mistakes w.r.t on-field decisions and Team Selection you highlighted in the video. No matter what they say in public, Broad and co will be internally devastated by losing this great opportunity to win the series and be a part of history and have all the momentum going into India in their time of transition; this will haunt them. Reminds me of 2021 Eng-Ind Test series. When Kohli-Rohit-Shastri leadership group threw away the 2021 series by deciding to abandon the 5th Test when they were on top with all the momentum and the English bowlers were gased out, in order to not miss the beginning of IPL; this despite Ganguly pleading with them all night over phone to stay and finish the series and not miss the golden opportunity of a rare Test series win in England. All this after the 1st Test was washed out with India on the verge of winning it. India should have won the series 4-1, or atleast 3-1 but they finished in a lame 2-2 draw, and Ganguly was turned into a villain by the Kohli cult and PR. Only for Kohli himself to step down from Captaincy a series later in SA after losing yet another golden chance to win over there. I wonder who will be the designated villain after this Bashes debacle for Bazballing England. And I wonder if Stokes will follow Kohli and step down if he loses in India early next year.

With current tech it's not actually possible for grounds of that size. There are some big covered stadiums in the world but the the playing area is a football pitch. International cricket ovals need to be at least twice that size. It couldn't be done without supports in the middle unless it was going to be prohibitively expensive and no one is going to do that when it might get used twice a year. That's why. Principality Stadium in Wales holds 74000, it's fine for a few T20 games but they'd never play an Ashes Test on that tiny oval. And having been to Marvel Stadium in Australia (holds 54000) when the roof was closed it's unbearably humid inside there when it's full. Far from ideal. No one could endure it for 5 days, it's worse than playing in the Middle East (or Pakistan) when it's 55 degrees. 54000 people is just over 1.6 MILLION watts of energy and that doesn't include the radiant heat from the lighting, which is considerable. Even LEDs give off a lot of heat when they're that powerful. The players were completely soaked, they looked like they'd been chucked in a swimming pool, and that was after a T20 game at night. No way you could do it for a Test match.

England only have themselves to blame. The weird selections; namely not picking Wood & Woakes in the first Test based off a sort of loyalty to Anderson, (who has been undercooked this series). I won’t be surprised if Anderson isn’t picked for the next Test and retires after this series. As well as that early declaration at Edgbaston, which looking at runs on the board is strange enough, until you glance at the scorecard and see that Root, England’s best batsman by far, was still in. ENG could have easily put 80 more runs on the board and won the first test, giving them momentum for a series victory. Stokes’ declaration and the weird selections lost them the first two Tests.

@@BatMan-oe2gh I thought Wood was raring to go by Lord's, but I could be wrong. Fair to say Bazball has been more about the batting selection rather than the bowling. Woakes is a far better bat and bowl than Robinson though so it's a bit mystifying.

If in doubt, don't go 2-0 down in a 5 match series... Probably the most obvious but also sound advice ever.... Unless you are an America's Cup boat vs New Zealand in San Francisco, 8-0 down to win 9-8... Never say die either.

Engalnd are easily the better team in england i dont think there's any doubt about it now,they extract more movement from the same surface,but imagine if everyone were fit,stokes, wood archer ,robinson and leach would give Aussies a run for their money in Australia specially if you take into consideration that those surfaces would suit bazball batting more

Because the previous ashes series in Australia during 2020/2021 was won by AUstralia 4-0, thus they are in 'possession' of the trophy. A draw isnt good enough to 'win it back'. If England won in Australia 18 monthes ago, they would have retained the ashes.

I don't get this "England dominated Australia" in the 4th test. Take Crawley's score out of the first innings total and its comparable to the Australians first innings. One man made the difference, yet he batted with only 71% control and could have been dismissed at any time. Bairstow's innings was useful, but he's a flat track bully. If we look at the second innings, well, Australia hadn't completed it yet, so who knows what they might've gotten. So, no, England weren't "all over" Australia.

I agree as well as disagree. Aus were the better team in the first 2 tests. It was only the introduction of Woakes and especially Wood that has made Eng the better team in the last 2 tests. Yet, Eng had a huge slice of luck with the weather in the first 3 tests. So much so, that almost every time Aus came to bat the clouds rolled in and every time Eng came to bat it was sunny. Thus Aus could have won the first 2 tests with bigger margins if they were as fortunate as Eng. Thus for Aus to remain ahead after 3 tests was good on them. Aus got lucky with the weather finally in 4th test and Aus retained the Ashes.

You can’t help but think England have been the better team in three of the four tests. Once by a large margin and twice less so. Oh, and if Stokes batted an hour longer at Lords they would have won that as well. You can easily make case for England leading this series 4-0. At the beginning of Bazball last year, New Zealand were beaten 0-3 in a series that could have been the complete reverse. What if….?
