Donald Cook - this is no longer a Royal Residence. It is designated an Historic Royal Palace. Amongst other valuable things the Crown Jewels are kept there. The homeless could certainly not afford the entry fee, as for addicts - given the greatest problem now is amongst the white collar, middle classes these will be provided by the various City Workers (the nasty rarefied world of banking). There are plenty of tourists who behave in a very disrespectful, obnoxious way and many natives would happily toss them into The Thames. Sadly we're not allowed to do that ......

These aren't the Life Guards, who form part of the Household Cavalry together with the Royals and Blues and who are on guard at Horseguards. They aren't trooping the colour either, that takes place at Horseguards Parade on the occasion of the monarch's birthday. What you are seeing here is the Escort to The Word, where the guards accompany the officer whose duty it is to bring the password for entry into the Tower of London to the Yeoman Warder on duty at the Gatehouse. They are called Escort for the Word when they fall in before going to collect it. They are members of the Coldstream Guards, one of the regiments that make up the Brigade of Guards. Every time a guard such as this is about to perform an official duty, the officer who is going to take command of them will inspect them before he gives the order to march off. The NCO will have summoned them out of the guardroom and ordered them to get into position before the arrival of the officer and if he has time he will also inspect them. Please note, I didn't call them 'Royal Guards.' The Grenadier Guards is the name of another regiment that belongs to the Brigade of Guards.

These are the Coldstream gaurds - the plume in the bearskin is red and on the right and the buttons on the tunics are in pairs.

@@didiaurich best thing to look for is the plume on the bearskin as the colour and side it is on tells you which of the 5 battalion of gaurds are on duty. The way the buttons are arranged works for the red tunics but not the gray coats used in winter.
