It’s baffling how Southgate can be the only one in the country who can’t see Bellingham playing next to Rice. And putting one of the lads who have played at LW all season for their clubs. Solves the balance issue completely.
@mrnumba1543 ай бұрын
I know, it is so basic. Bellingham picking it up on the half turn and driving forward would make us much more dangerous. Southgate is embarrassingly under equipped tactically. I think he actually needs to go and do his coaching badges again. The only reason that the players were marginally better is because they were already through, pressure off
@Tesmond2563 ай бұрын
Rice seemed to avoid taking any responsibility bringing the ball forward. The second half he seemed to actively avoid showing for the pass. I would consider replacing him with Mainoo or even Gallagher if he played like that for me. Do you have any idea why he wasn’t trying to receive the ball from the defence in the later stages of the match?
@randomdaveUK3 ай бұрын
Totally agree with you. Micah's team is the one I'd play but I'd keep Saka in there and bring Palmer on to absolutely run riot against tired legs in the second half, he'd leave the defenders on their backside
@1individeo3 ай бұрын
I think Southgate might have thought "I'am going to put the players where prefer to play". And Belligham has became a monster in Madrid playing up front and scoring goals. ... And goals are a like drugs once you try it you are hooked, playing alongside Rice Puts him far away from the opposite goal. So the thing here is wether Jude is OK to play deep or not, knowing if he wants to make history he needs to score goals.
@benfuller28903 ай бұрын
that might work against the tinpot nations but against the big boys no chance a) jude hasn't played there for a WHOLE YEAR b) too many ball to feet attackers, distances will be too big, resulting in countless transitions c) buildup will suffer even more... jude isn't an expansive passer, deeplying playmaker nor range passer, can't control the tempo like a kroos/modric

100% agree with Gary about the format, when the Euros only had 16 teams the group stages were so much more exciting and higher quality - letting x number of 3rd placed teams through with this 24 team format creates a load of dull and tedious games. I think both the old format and the new format have their own appeals. Now there are more games to boil the competition down to 16 teams, which makes the games to go from 16 teams to 8 teams more important (the round of 16, just one game. In the old format that would be three games). We've essentially just shifted tension away from the qualifyers to that extra round. Considering smaller countries now have an opportunity to enjoy participating under the spotlight, rather than obscurely in the qualifyers, i suppose I slightly favour this format.

No width and no balance... it's pretty much that simple, and it was always going to happen the moment that the squad was announced. We have no fit Left Back, as he decided to take one who's been injured since March and was still injured and we've been squeezing square pegs into round holes constantly, from Trippier at Left Back, to Trent in Central Midfield, to Foden on the Left Wing, it's completely unbalanced and narrows the pitch. If we had a natural Left Back, keep playing Mainoo or Gallagher in Central Midfield instead of Trent, and Gordon out on the Left Wing, we would be alot more balanced and would be able to really stretch teams. Personally though, it might be time to switch to a 3-5-2 and move Saka out to a Left Wing Back role, Trent in a Right Wing Back role, Guehi, Stones and Walker in the 3 Centre Back roles, Rice, Bellingham and Mainoo for arguments sake into the Central Midfield roles (or Rice, Bellingham and Palmer in behind the strikers) with Kane and either Watkins or Toney up front... I know it's not perfect, but it would allow for some natural width on both sides of the pitch, give freedom to both Wing Backs to push forward and stretch the pitch wide, allows two strikers to occupy defenders as often its Kane on his own against 3 Centre Backs and runners from Midfield.

It’s strange how we keep getting the easy groups the easy qualifiers and now the easy route all the way to the final. It’s been like that for a few tournaments now. We rarely play decent teams till the semi’s now for the last 5 tournaments. It’s ridiculous how easy a path we get. ✌️👍✌️

@lukesenior45633 ай бұрын
It's because we win our groups now and the "big teams" get knocked out before we play them in later rounds as there's not many "easy games" any more. See Switzerland eliminating France at last Euros and Croatia eliminating Brazil at the WC. Capello didn't win a group of Algeria, USA and Slovenia, Hodgson came 2nd in a group of Wales, Russia and Slovakia Southgate has won 3 of the 4 group stages he's managed in. Made his own luck, but people won't give him any credit for things like that, its just "luck".
@詹姆斯-k2k3 ай бұрын
@@lukesenior4563This. I think the only time there was genuine luck was 2018 when they finished 2nd and got the easier draw, but again that was practically by design because they were already through and rested players against belgium in the 3rd group game.
@Gavaldo3 ай бұрын
@@lukesenior4563 Yeah but so do Spain & Germany etc. I’m just saying in general if you look back over the last tournaments since South Africa World Cup playing Germany was the last time we had to play any kind of decent side before a semi final match. We’ve had Paraguay we’ve had Iceland (let’s not go there) we got wales and this is just off the top of my head. If we look at the other groups qualifier stage those big teams have had always a good team still in there group when we always seem to have got lucky by not playing well & this time again I think we’ll go all the way to the Semi at least & anything can happen at that stage & by then all the big Four only one can be left for the final. In theory we may go all the way to the final by playing teams like Slovakia Austria Switzerland Gorgia or Hungary or Ukraine instead of Holland at best while I’m writing this then were there. 🤷

@user-jc3wy3zp8w3 ай бұрын
Southgate has an opportunity to change our fortunes with the changes that the panel have discussed and what the vast majority of the fans also agree with. Gordon on the left, Foden at 10, Palmer on the right and put Jude back alongside Rice. Anyone with an ounce of football knowledge can see this is our best set up. Foden is a better 10 than Jude and Gordon is a better left mid/wing than Foden. Palmer was great when he came on and has to get a start because Saka, as much as I like him, has been poor. Slovakia are going to sit deep so England have to change the personnel and tactics because the starting 11, and tactics so far against sides sat deep, simply hasn’t worked. Will he? I doubt it. He’ll maybe switch Maino for Gallagher and it will be another drab, slow, ponderous performance that we may nick 1-0 or on pens.

We might scrape through the 2nd round but I have my doubts. People forget that we lost the last friendly before the tournament started. The form has gradually dropped off since the end of the qualifiers. After the last Euro's, it was hard to see beyond the fact that that was the chance to win a trophy and we didn't quite make it. It's one thing to blame Southgate but he took over at a bad time and has done remarkably well when there were no better options to manage the team. That's still the case.
