If it wasn't for that wally McClaren, Beckham should and would have had many more caps because he was still in good form during this time. Not surprisingly, England failed to qualify for Euro 2008 lol.

i think what sums it up is the champions league final in 2008, between two english clubs (man utd and chelsea), the SAME year as the euros that england didnt qualify for... and TEN english players started that night from both sides... thats a FULL outfield team! from man utd... brown, ferdinand, hargreaves, scholes, carrick and rooney... and from chelsea... terry, ashley cole, lampard and joe cole! just makes it even more disgraceful that they weren't at the euros that summer!

And it was even better with Rooney, Owen, Scholes, Beckham, Terry, King, the Coles etc. Its really Englands greatest period in football history but they always got edged out by other amazing teams in 1/4 finals. Never liked sven as their coach either though. 🤷‍♂️

@@swblade6190 you cannot label that generation as being overhyped. They didnt live up to the expectations in the national team, but theyre legends of the sport at club level without any doubts.

@@RM-gr1mc they're very, very good players. If you're building a top 4 Prem side then those players would be fantastic acquisitions. But football does not exist within the anglocentric Premier League bubble. It is far more than the hype and physicality that the EPL fixates on. Excellent players? Of course; irrefutable. "World Class" and up there with the other top tier sides of that period? No. You cannot proclaim that if you have zero creativity and struggle with ball retention. You can get away with that in the EPL, not at international level

@@swblade6190 okay it seems you have something against epl players and epl teams. Thats on you. Again, they didnt live up to expectations on national team. But at club level? They were amongst the best in their positions and the best prem teams of that era not only competed with the best teams of europe, they beat them and went to UCL finals. How are prem teams not good compared to the best in europe? You know england is only second to spain in UCL trophies right? You know that in football, there should be more than one way of playing the game right? The point is to be highly competitive knowing your strengths and weaknessess and build from there. Not everyone will play possession or tiki taka. But if you can neutralize your opponent, be competitive and WIN.....then thats what matters. We see this in other sports. Different styles to compete. Hell, even in combat sports. Guys that come forward, others counter, others have a much more defensive and "boring" approach. The point? To be highly competitive and win. Some can win and do it in "style", others will do whatever it takes even if its ugly. Find a way to win. Do it. So yeah, not sure what you have against epl. 🤷‍♂️

I remember this game. I was 13 at the time. Wanted England to win this game so badly and get revenge after their 1-0 defeat to Spian in another friendly in Madrid two seasons before this (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4OzZmBnqrCSl8U) after the disgusting racial abuse England black players got from the Spanish fans. Unfortunately wasn't the case and was another 1-0 defeat to Spain.
