[English Dub] Maxence's Song/Chanson de Maxence from Les Demoiselles de Rochefort

Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (dir. Jacques Demy) is one of the most charming and unique movie musicals from the 60s. Unfortunately, it is sometimes overlooked outside of the Francophone world. The film was shot simultaneously in English, but this version has never been released on home media, let alone restored. I combined some of the English song dubs that were recorded back in the 60s with clips from a 2K restoration done in 2010 by Digimage Cinema. The music of her voice recalls a classic theme, the kind of girl who'd haunt an adolescent dream. That portrait of my love, like memories of youth, floats in my head between pure fantasy and truth. I seem to see the breeze caress her golden hair, its perfume sweeter than the sweetest summer air. I could go on and on describing her to you, and when tomorrow comes I still would not be through. My one, my only love, I never shall forget. But what's the good of dreams? I haven't found her yet. Nous sommes très attristés! Maxence, alias l'acteur Jacques Perrin est mort aujourd'hui! Deep sadness in our hearts, today the french actor Jacques Perrin passed away at the age of 80! La toute prémière fois que j'ai vu ce filme c'était cette version en anglais les années 70 encore au Brésil oú ma famille vivait refugiée depuis 1944. Sa version française c'est à Paris que j'ai découverte beaucoup plus tard dans les années 90. Les deux versions sont magnifiques! Au Brésil le filme s'appelait " Duas Garotas Muito Românticas "! Un trésor parmi tant d'autres du cinéma de Jacques Demy! Cette version en anglais me ramène à mon enfance.

I think he’s not only absolutely gorgeous, but also is oozing charisma every second. I can’t remember the last time I was so sold on a love ballad by the pure look of longing of someone’s face. ❤

Marie Claire seems most likely to be referring to a French international monthly magazine: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Claire

I always assumed it was just several female names. Many of the English versions vary quite a bit from the literal translation.

When the grotesque competes with the improbable. I try to imagine Fred Astaire, Judy Garland or Gene Kelly dubbed in French when they sing in "Swing Time", "The Wizard of Oz" or "Singing In The Rain" !!! But what's crazy, even if they were dubbed after, is that Georges Chakiris, Grover Dale and Gene Kelly had made the effort to learn ALL THE texts in French, whether their dialogues or their songs ! Then I don't understand why Demy and Legrand endorsed this catastrophe, both musical and visual. For example in this song, the movement of Jacques Perrin's lips doesn't fit at all with the English text. Why didn't they AT LEAST leave the songs in French with subtitles ?!? Each language has its own music. A real disaster....

They shot a version in English where the dubbing matched the picture, but it has not had a home release unfortunately. This is just one fan’s effort to sync the sound and the video to give an idea what it might have looked like. You can stick with the French version if you don’t like it :)

(If I'd read your introduction under your video, instead of getting angry like a moron in front of my Mac, you would have avoided my aggressive and quite unpleasant comment...) Thank you also for inviting me to watch the version French but I'm French, and in 1967, this film was for me one of the greatest cinematographic and human shocks of my life. However I was only 9 years old, but there're things that mark you forever, like this Masterpiece did at the time. Since then, impossible to tell you how many times I've watched it or listened to its soundtrack. If I'd to take just one film to a desert island, it would be this one ! But you who seem as fan as I'm of this film, as well as of the brilliant Jacques Demy, you understand me, don't you ?... 🤗

@@MoSkent1 Hi Mo, no problem at all. This would be my desert island pick too- it is one of my all-time favorites! So I understand the strong feelings you have! My only intention with these videos is to share this incredible film with others, and try to take down some of the language barriers that might prevent people outside the French-speaking world from discovering this brilliant film. @@KesterSpach Thanks again for this answer Kester, and sorry not to have read your explanations. Mine, the last one I promise, is only a reflection on the dubbing of films compared to the original versions. For example an Anglo-Saxon film or series dubbed in French passes perfectly, to the point that we barely notice it, (I just saw again "Breaking Bad", "The Sopranos", "Six Feet Under" and "Fargo" in French and the dubbing was impeccable...) while the opposite is disastrous ! The same goes for Italian films which, paradoxically, are impossible to watch once dubbed in French even though it's also a Latin language. One might think that the two languages would go well together, yet visually English «sticks» a hundred times better to French ! (This time, no need to answer....) 🤗
