English Essay- Impact of coronavirus on Education

Covid-19 pandemic has created havoc not only to the lives and livelihoods at present but also to the future world. The future of the world is today's children. Education which plays a major role in curbing the lives of millions of children was abruptly kept aside due to the inevitable lockdown. But as there are two sides of a coin there are few positive outcomes apart from the many negative aspects of the pandemic. The main positive outcome of covid-19 is the huge shift from the traditional blackboard teaching to technical or digital platform. People started work from home and learning from home which prevented them from travelling, pollution etc. Lot of time, energy and resources can be saved. Shifting to soft copies can save lots of paper which means trees. So this is environment friendly too. As students started learning online parents could avoid building fund, uniform, infrastructure fee, transportation, laboratory fee, co-curricular activity fee etc.. these funds can inturn be spent on the nutrition and well being of the child. While coming to the negative aspects of covid-19 most of the government schools and small private schools were completely shut due to lockdown and they donot have any access to digital platforms. Only 8% of homes with young members have computers with net link. So it is very difficult to shift students to online platform especially in rural india where a smart phone and a stable internet connection is not a cake walk. As the schools were closed there is no mid-day meal programme which seriously impacted 115 million children who face malnourishment due to school closure. As there is no school and no food, the rural poor considering their girl child a burden to the family gets them married keeping 2.5 million more girls around the world at the risk of child marriages in the coming five years. This inturn causes other problems like domestic violence, maternity mortality rate, child mortality rate, gender inequality, population growth, increase in crime rate and poverty. Covid-19 may push millions of children into child labour. Pandemic has created a digital divide between the rich and the poor... The urban and the rural.a recent NCERT survey says that 27% of students in india donot have smartphones and laptops. 28% are not able to study properly due to frequent power outrage. 33% admitted that they are not able to focus on studies during online classes. These classes are not able to solve problems related to math and science. A recent study by the centre for disease control and prevention shows that one in every four people aged 18 to 24 seriously contemplated suicide in june 2020. We need to seriously think about the solutions to adjust ourselves to the new normal. Government needs to address this problem both from a long term and a short term point of view. In short term there should be a huge shift from traditional chalk talk method to online plat form. This is the time for us to shift to massive open online courses(MOOC) and open distance learning(ODL). The HRD ministry operates a series of web platforms like SWAYAM, E-PG pathasala, DIKSHA(digital infrastructure for knowledge sharing), CBSE podcast, national digital library of india, UMANG mobile app etc which are of a great help to 300 million students of india. Each student should be provided with a tab with pre loaded lessons for his academic year. This should be provided free to the marginalised and the poor. As the lessons are pre loaded there is no need of internet which not only reduces unwanted distractions but also reduces screen time to students which is effecting the mental health of students. This is all costly but we need to make it possible as this is the need of the hour and our GDP spent on education is not more than 0.8% at present. Government is planning to spend 6% which is quoted in NEP 2020. So this plan is feasible and important. Another important factor is that there is a shortage of more than five lakh teachers in elementary schools. And 14% government schools donot have prescribed minimum of six teachers. 35% professor posts, 46% associate professor posts, 26% assistant professor posts are vacant. And over five lakh untrained teachers are employed in schools. So this need to be answered. There should be immediate recruitment to fill all the vacancies and there need to be proper training to all the teachers to handle the online education system. Blended education system should be introduced where in all the practical, project and laboratory related can be done offline following proper sanitization and social distancing norms. Theory can be learnt online. In long run government needs to improve the infrastructure like electricity and free internet connection to reach the last mile student. Government should also chech for the privacy and security of its citizens in using video conferencing and other applications. We should build our strong indian alternatives to zoom and google classrooms in view of security and privacy. Security tools and measures can be implemented to keep users protected from treats of hacking and ciber crimes.
