I love when countries choose songs in their native language, but honestly I feel like it makes so much sense for this song to be in both English and Portuguese. It's like she's trying to explain all her emotions to the people from outside of Portugal but she just can't find a way to do it and then tells us that there's no better way to explain what she's feeling than with the word "saudade", a word that just exists in her native language Portuguese and that has no equivalent in any other language. I feel like this message wouldn't come across that well if the song was only in Portuguese. This song gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it and I hope Maro will do well in Turin, Portugal is one of favourite countries at Eurovision, they always send something interesting and beautiful. Good luck, Portugal!

Exactly what I have been explaining to old Portuguese grandmas who comment shit like "PORTUGUESE SONGS MUST BE IN PORTUGUESE, ARE YOU ASHAMED OF YOUR LANGUAGE?". This song is an ode to the singularity of the Portuguese language and cultural identity.

She wrote this song after losing her grandpa. Saudade is a word in portuguese with no specific interpretation, but it sums up the meaning of "grief'' and ''pain'' I think. And MY GOD how beautifully portuguese artists transform this feeling into art. MARO is the latest example, with such a therapeutic tune and voice, quality arrangement. Magical.

Saudade e a mix of longing and nostalgia for something that is absent and was part of your experience in the past. It's a mix of the good emotions that come from the memories but also the pain of that not being a part of your life at the moment (or ever again)

Saudade is such a strong and ingrained word, so visceral that only in the rich and fabulous Portuguese language does it exist. It means absence of something or someone, loss, and it is a very strong feeling and that we express it in many ways: "I miss you so much" or "I want to miss you because we haven't seen each other for so long"... It is something incoming, strong, and this beautiful word that only exists in our language perfectly expresses a feeling. Hugs

I've always loved your approach to Eurovision, you're not so different from us Italians in a way: you don't really care about Eurovision per se, you just want a song that truly represents you as a folk, you're there to choose THE Portuguese song of the year. I've also always had a soft spot for Portuguese songs in general, and also your relation with Saudade is what drew me closer to your culture. The concept of immense and unexplainable sorrow and sadness is something that I truly love, and I honestly can relate to it, ngl. On behalf of those Italians who love this song and Portugal in general, I wish you guys luck! Buona fortuna fratelli portoghesi!

So glad to see people are enjoying this song. In my first year in college I had a teacher say "saudade" was the most important word in our language (he was tying it to the myth of D. Sebastião but that's another story). It's very hard to define but it's a sort of nostalgic feeling about missing someone (loved ones and friends) or something (home, country etc) and wishing them well.

It talks about feelings, about the sadness and emptiness that Maro is feeling about losing her best friend, her grandfather. No fireworks, no frantic dances, just herself, the audience, her grandfather and emotions. Very portuguese but universal at the same time. Thank you so much. Greetings from Portugal.

Saudade is a Portuguese word that is so unique that's has no translation. It means something like "missing something or somebody" but this feeling is at the same time sad and good to feel. The lyrics are from Maro herself also the music, and the song is dedicated to his grand father who passed the way. That's why the more profound and intimate part Maro sings in portuguese. This song is great and we portuguese are very proud to participate in eurovision contes with such a simple and meaningful theme.

When Salvador Sobral won the Eurovision, he said "music is not about fireworks, music is about feelings". The word "saudade" cannot be translated, it means the feeling of loosing, something, someone. You feel "saudade" when you don't see your beloved ones. Even though most people don't know this word and meaning, when you heard it, you feel hasadhappines, sadness, whith chills, vibes, nostalgy. It's a word that travels your feelings. Absolutly astonishing song. I don't care if we will win or not, this music makes me feel............. Proud to be Portuguese. Saudade is a term derived from the Lusitanian culture, first Galician and Portuguese, which indicates a form of melancholy, a feeling of nostalgia. Etymologically, it derives from the Latin solitude, solitudinis, solitude, isolation and greetings, greetings and greetings. In some ways, saudade is a kind of nostalgic reminder, affecting a special good that is absent, accompanied by a desire to relive it or to possess it. In many cases, there is almost a mystical dimension, such as acceptance of the past and faith in the future.

The song needed English to work, let me explain. The song is about the feeling 'Saudade', which is the only word she found capable of describing her feelings about her grandfather's death. She tried to explain her feelings in english (hence the use of english) but she couldn't. The only way to explain it was through the word 'saudade' (portuguese) that has no translation to any other language because of it's complexity. 😊

(Saudade) It was taught to us Portuguese people since young age that a lot of people died several centuries ago, specially young people and kids, across Europe of course, not only in Portugal, because wars, hunger, illnesses, people had to deal with constant loss and pain... But when you bury the body you keep the memory alive like the graves where the bodies rest... But when the constant traveling across the sea of portuguese sailors, fathers and sons for months and years, that takes the certainty of where our loved ones are or if they are alive or dead... Not knowing the day those sailors and soldiers would come back to their families, if there was a come back, it took away that certainty from a lot of mothers and wives, grand parents, friends, children, including the memory, the finality and at the end their meaning of life... And that anguish and dispair that could crumble an entire people in pain until extinction, in the case of Portuguese people it changed into a bearable feeling... The sweet and addicted feeling of hope dressed in an eternal sadness: Saudade... And that turned out as a portuguese people identity and cultural expression, specially in the case of Fado music. Of course nowadays the term Saudade lost that primal meaning because times changed... But portuguese people did refuse to let the word die, even though it changed into something more trivial, it kept the deepness, because like I said it turned out as a people cultural identity.

Saudade hasn't any kind of translation to other languages. It is a specific word/meaning from Portugal and the Portuguese. It relates to the time of Discoveries when the sailors sailed from Portugal, leaving their families behind, and the feeling the mothers, sons, and wives had was more than a miss you. It was "Saudade," a strong emotion, coming from our most profound feeling when we lose someone when we don't see someone for a long, long time, more substantial than an "I miss so much"! "SAUDADE" - Everyone has, but only the Portuguese has a specific word for it. It is one of the Portuguese words that there isn't any kind of translation to other languages. SAUDADE is... SAUDADE!

Saudade is an exclusively Portuguese word, it does not have a direct translation in other languages but it has a correlation with the word (missing), it is not necessarily a negative word, it is the expression of the nostalgic feeling far from someone who is far from a loved one, or from a place. This song "SAUDADE SAUDADE" was born after the death of Maro's Grandfather, and as he explains in "Portugues" she saw Grandfather as her emotional support, her shelter, and how her ground and support disappeared in one day. to the other, leaving a void in her heart. Saudade according to the context in which it is inserted can have a conutation of hope, joy of the reunion, or simply a deep pain and sadness of those who left and will never return... Saudade!

I like your comment but I have to ad something that I don’t see mentioned anywhere: how female empowering this is. In an event where we expect the female performers to show their cleavages and legs, although the five girls are beautiful and they would look great in sexy outfits, they show such a serenity and grace just sitting there and giving and incredible emotional performance. Nothing against legs and cleavages but this is definitely another level. A total commitment to music as an art form and a conveyor of emotions. Never followed Eurovision but, as Portuguese I’m really proud of how profoundly different this is. 🥰. The final result in the competition is absolutely irrelevant.
