Hello Sarah, Thanks for your useful video. May I ask you a question Sarah? My question is "Is unless used in conditional sentences type 2 and type 3?. I read online that unless is used for all three types of conditional sentences. Is this possible? I will appreciate your answer. Thanks a lot.
@oxfordenglishnow Жыл бұрын
"Unless" is typically used in conditional sentences, but its usage can vary depending on the context. Let's break down how "unless" is commonly used in different types of conditional sentences: Type 1 Conditional: "Unless" is not commonly used in simple present real conditional sentences (Type 1). In Type 1 conditionals, the if-clause is in the present simple tense, and the main clause is in the future simple tense. Example: "If it rains, we will stay at home." Type 2 Conditional: "Unless" is often used in Type 2 conditional sentences. In these sentences, the if-clause is in the past simple tense, and the main clause is in the present conditional (would + base form). Example: "Unless it stopped raining, we wouldn't go for a picnic." Type 3 Conditional: "Unless" can be used in Type 3 conditional sentences, although it is less common. In Type 3 conditionals, the if-clause is in the past perfect tense, and the main clause is in the past conditional perfect (would have + past participle). Example: "We would have missed the train unless we had left early." In summary, while "unless" is commonly used in Type 2 conditionals, it can also be used in some Type 3 conditionals, but it is not typically used in Type 1 conditionals. The usage may depend on the specific context and the desired emphasis on the condition and result. I hope that helps!

Thank you mam but l want to know if we could use unless with second or third conditional
@oxfordenglishnow2 жыл бұрын
Hi Zooo Zoo, The word unless basically means the same thing as if ... not. For example, "Unless you study, you will fail" means the same thing as "If you do not study, you will fail." Unless is often used in conditional sentences. It can be used with the first, second, or third conditional. Here are some examples. First Conditional: "You'll be unhappy unless you break up with her" = "You'll be unhappy if you do not break up with her." Second Conditional: "I wouldn't ask her out unless you told me it was OK" = "I wouldn't ask her out if you told me it was not OK." Third Conditional: "They wouldn't have come over unless we'd invited them" = "They wouldn't have come over if we had not invited them." I hope that helps!

Hi ma’am, My name is Shuhaib Gurukkal. I have a doubt. How can we use “being” without auxiliary verbs. I have seen this kind of sentences in news reports. Eg: Tribunal appointments being taken lightly: Supreme Court. Is there any rule or it is just passive voice… sorry if I wrote anything stupid.
@oxfordenglishnow2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shuhaib, In your example sentence, I would say it is just shortened for economy of words. I think it needs an auxiliary to be correct. I don't know of any rule for doing this, Language continually evolves and we are always looking at ways to say things quicker and more economically. I think this is just an example of this.

@oxfordenglishnow2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashfaq, well the difference is the meaning of the tenses used. In the first one, you are using the present tense, so it is talking about the present and the second one is talking about the past, often recent past with the present perfect. I hope that helps!

3. I don't want to go to the party unless you go too. 4. Unless you move suddenly , the dog do not attack you. Unless is used to provide extra information about the future action when included in a sentence. right mam? that's why we convert the main clause into a future tense sentence using will/would 3. I will not go to the party unless you go too. 4. Unless you move suddenly, the dog will not attack you. above two are correct if not please clarify, Thank you madam
