Learn how to use the modals MIGHT, MAY, MUST, and CAN to talk about possibility and certainty in English. A speculation is when you use the evidence in a situation to make an opinion about it. To form your opinion, you ask yourself, “What has happened or not happened based on what I know or see?” You don’t know for sure that your opinion is true, but you can make an informed guess. For example, imagine your friend told you she would call at 6 p.m., but she did not. What could you speculate or deduce? She MIGHT have forgotten. She COULD have been too busy. Something urgent MAY have come up. In this advanced English grammar lesson, we will discuss all the grammar you need to make a speculation or deduction in English.
After the lesson, take the quiz here! www.engvid.com/english-gramma...

Hello Jade. You look awsome - healthy and happy. It must be that you are pretty satisfied with your life. You might have found a life elixir. (heheh) I am very glad to see you back and that you look well. Lately, in your videos, you seemed like you were so tired, ill, "blue", sad, unhappy ... all of this or some of this or something similiar ... low energy... like you didn't take care of yourself. Now, I can see huge progression - you even put make up on your face, you put nail polish, your face is brighter ... I am SO HAPPY for you. You are so talented, you are so special and please stay with us. We need you, we love you, and we care about you, our beloved teacher. Biiig hug from Bosnia

I started learning Eng at the age of 6, now I'm 25. I love her channel but I mostly watch her videos to listen to British Eng not to learn. But in that 19 years, every teacher and book said that 'might' is the formal and polite version of 'may'. And here I am, hearing the total opposite with a confused Pikachu face. Thank you so much!

"I had too many pens going on here now." LOL! Anyway, you have said in your videos that you are an introvert. I am not an introvert nor an extrovert, I feel like I am an ambivert. But to be honest, I adore the way introverts explain a thing: intense and meaningful. I got some introverts around me, and I fancy to be tutored by them. They are so humble, serious, and meaningful: I don't waste a second when I'm learning from them. Well, conclusion: I love your explanation.

In German, the equivalent to " He must be unwell" - "ihm muss unwohl sein", uses the same modal verb "must/müssen". Yet the sentence indicates an assumption, not a certainty. So - just to be certain - is the above quoted sentence always a certainty in English or does it leave room for doubt?

The forms ‘may’ and ‘might’. These are the same verb - just ’might’ is in the past tense. Usually we prefer the past tense to do one thing, to sound more polite (more distant). It is about not wanting to take risks in drawing certainty. Because we choose to distant ourselves, we will sound less certain. Now, what’s the difference between ‘might’ and ‘could’?
