Here's my reply, at last! I 've held this doubt in my mind for about 10 years, not finding anybody to clarify it until I found your channel. Excuse for my delay! The following is a full quote from page 183 of the book "The Third Chimpanzee" by Jared Diamond. I have split it into several parts just to show where the rule applies and also where it doesn't. As far as I understand, examples 1,2, and 4 are according to the rule but not so example 3. "For example, animal domestication arose partly from (1) people's keeping captive wild animals as pets, partly from (2) wild animals' learning to profit from the proximity of people (3) (e.g., wolves following human hunters to catch crippled prey). Similarly, early stages of plant domestication included (4) people's harvesting wild plants and discarding seeds, which they thereby accidentally "planted"". Shouldn't number 3 be "wolves' following"? Of course, it could also be a typo.
@WritetotheTop
@WritetotheTop 3 ай бұрын
Wolves that followed... becomes the participle following. It's a different use of the -ing (there are 4 uses). This is because this is used as an example of the wild animals' actions mentioned in #2. Does this help?

In 1973, that is, 50 years ago, I attended an English 101A class at USC. They taught me this structure together with two more ones that they called "for-to" and "that S" (S stands for sentence). All three structures are used to make "embedded sentences". We used the book "Sentence sense" from which I learned about NEGATIVES, AND and some more structures. I adored that book, my classmates hated it. I have never stopped learning English and nowadays that there's the internet, I have found out that a lot of people don't make use of this structure which they called "poss ing". After a good chunk of time searching in KZbin videos to put an end to my doubts, I found you. Later I will send you several examples that I found in a famous book by a famous writer where he uses the structure but down on the same page, he doesn't use it. And that created the doubt that launched my search for a solution. Thanks for your attention.

This is what I gathered. This subject is also called fused participle. When the noun associated with the gerund is simple, concrete, such as personal pronouns and one- or two-word proper nouns (that itself does not have possessive), use the possessive case. When the noun associated with the gerund is abstract (such as tyranny, capitalism) or complex (compound with A, B, and C), or when interrupted by appositives, use the nominative case. Tyranny impinging on individual liberty is a cause for rebellion. My dogs and cats, totaling four, lying on the couch is the cause for the maid's demanding higher pay.

Thanks a lot Adam for such an informative lesson. I understand this structure, but I don't usually see apostropy's being used. I'm not sure how I landed here, but great vid. As a native speaker(US), I have a question. I have never heard of a structure such as "I miss my mother's cooking for me every day", I'd just say "I miss my mother cooking for me every day" Im not explicitly implying I miss her "food", but its assumed even though cooking is used as the verb, it sorta implies both, the action of her cooking and the result of her cooking, the food..is that wrong? It just sounds weird to say "I miss my xxxx's gerund + FOR me"

Thank you for the video. I have a question. I have heard statements like 'He waiting for others to join' or 'Atmosphere getting hot and humid as time passes'. These statements seem to have a gerund phrase just after subject without any BE verb. In the first statement the subject 'He' follows 'waiting for others to join'. What kind of sentence is this? These kinds of statements are mostly noticed in live commentary. Is the gerund phrase acting as predicate here? I would greatly appreciate if could could clarify.

I try to explain it to my students as ownership of the action. I have a problem with his being here. I don't have a problem with him. It's his presence that bothers me. Unfortunately, I see these mistakes in mainstream publications all the time. I've also had people try to "correct" me. I don't know what editors do these days, but it isn't correcting grammar!

Hi Adam, thank you for the lesson. Just two questions I would like to ask from you. 1. what comes as object complement In the following example? Participle or Gerund? I saw Jim riding his bike. Is riding a participle or gerund? In Engvid, it says it's a gerund? is it correct? 2. what is the object of the preposition in these two sentences. Are both sentences correct to say? The possibility of me getting a job is little. The possibility of my getting a job is little. In the first example, 'getting' is a participle describing me. So 'me' is the object of the preposition OF. second example, 'getting' is the gerund as object of the preposition OF. And 'my' is the object of a possessive gerund. Is it correct? Please correct me If I am wrong. I hope my questions are clear. Thank you. Be safe.
@MT38618
@MT38618 2 жыл бұрын
I saw Jim riding his bike --> 'RINDING" is a present participle , not a gerund . The possibility of me getting a job is little --> object of the preposition is "me" . In this case "me" is a subject in the accusative case , which is NOT very acceptable by grammarians . The possibility of my getting a job is little. --> object of the prepositon is "my" , Here it is a "possessive gerund" , and "getting" is a gerund and a subject of the nonfinite clause with a possessive pronoun "my" . This is more formal and more widely accpetable .

Really I could not help appreciating your wonderful class with beautiful explanations. But I have one doubt. How can we express the different meanings when the pronoun become 'she' as in the sentence I love you singing, and I love your singing." I love her singing " Is this sentence has both the meaning. How can we express it. Here I have a kind request to point out my mistakes in the sentence I have written above, especially the participle 'appreciating'as I used in that sentence., since I am not native English speaker.

Hello, Adam! I hope you are having a nice day! I have a question. When I write an introduction for the Integrated TOEFL essay, I tend to use "indeed". For example, "The lecture and the article discuss whether or not the *thing* is effective for *something*. The writer holds that it is indeed. However, the professor casts doubt on this assertion... and so on". So, is it appropriate to use "indeed" like this? Thank you in advance! Looking forward to hear from you!

@marmaru7656
@marmaru7656 5 жыл бұрын
Meaning of can't stand is " You're frankly accept something that is unpleasant for you". First sentence just describes about the person who is in the direct object position. For example, I can't stand him who is singing in the bedroom.After applying reduced adjective clause rules, it becomes "I can't stand him singing in the bedroom". In the second sentence, the subject can't able to tolerate someone's activity in the bedroom. Here the activity is "singing". Who is doing?. The person(HIS) mentioned by the subject in the sentence.
