Your lesson is great, but I've not seen possessive gerunds' being used in formal academic english even. Is it that modern English writing style has changed or something? Thanks
@engvidAlex6 жыл бұрын
Not at all. It's not something you're going to see all over the place, but it is something that exists and does show up in academic texts, news reports, etc.

How would one then explain the difference between: "Thank you for your help." And "Thank you for your helping."
@engvidAlex4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your help is much more common. “Help” is a noun so it’s easy to put it after a possessive adjective (your.) “Helping” is technically okay grammatically, but it’s not common at all. Stick to “Thank you for your help” in this case if your goal is common usage.

Most of these just don't sound right to me. For example, it would seem more accurate if you rewrote the sentences like this: - I appreciate your coming TO here ("I appreciate you coming here " still sounds more accurate to me, because I still see "coming' as a verb, not a noun, but the way I rewrote it would be more "acceptable" to me). - He resents Mary's promotion; or "he resents the fact that Mary was promoted". ("Being" "promoted" still look live verbs to me). - I'm tired of Miguel's complaints. - I need to talk to you about your writing (Perfect, cause, in this case, I really can see "writing" as a noun). - Her dancing is beautiful (Perfect, same as the last one). I know that the way the professor taught in the video is the right way, but I still struggle to make sense of it in some cases.
