Not only do inverted sentences give your writing some style, they also get you higher points on the IELTS or TOEFL essay score.
In this video we look at another complex sentence structure that you can add to your toolbox for better English writing. In inverted clauses (such as the one above) the verb comes before the subject.
This structure is very formal and is not limited to clauses beginning with NOT ONLY. There are many examples of inversions, such as:
✔ Hardly had she arrived…
✔ Should you feel inclined to…
✔ Neither do you.
And many more.
There is a lot to take in in this lesson, but recognizing these structures will not only make your writing better, it will help your reading as well (notice that not only in the last sentence does not lead to an inversion-find out why in the video).

Dear Adam, First of all, your videos are awesome, and the way you explain is really fantastic. I have a small question concerning the conditional inversion; If the tense used in the original sentence was the present perfect continuous, would the 'had/should/were' version be infinitive as well? If physical education has been introduced to school curriculum, students' mental abilities as well as the physical ones would definitely improve. Had physical education to introduce....? Or to be introduced? Appreciated your response. Regards,

Will you please do a video about the CHANGES in TOEFL 2019 WRITING SECTION and a video for the INTEGRATED TASK? By the way, I have taken the exam 3 times in 2019 and always got 23 or less. I am guessing that they are making the questions more lengthy and this troubles me in time management. I only need to gain 24. I have all your three phenomenal books and still struggling with the first task for some unknown reason. I would appreciate it if you could make videos on the above subjects.

Hi, Adam! You said that "hardly" could be used as a quantifier as well, showing the amount " Hardly anyone came to the lecture", but you mentioned hardly later as being used for showing the amount, using inversion in that example. My question: when using "hardly" as a quantifier, showing the amount, is allowed to use inversion or not?

The example you gave in the lesson about the more the more, if we don't make inversion in this sentence how we can say the clause? The more connected one is, the more likely found partners one is. Is this sentence true? Thank you in advance.
