Hi. A phrase is just a group of words: a noun phrase (a good student), a verb phrase (studies hard), etc. A sentence has a subject and a verb. To be perfectly honest, English advanced learners do not think grammar is worth learning because they don't find it tricky! It comes out natural without having to think about its partners.
@Englishwithjennifer5 жыл бұрын
It's true that some pick up patterns without ever having direct grammar instruction. I've observed and worked with different learners over the years. Some prefer to learn grammar indirectly and absorb a lot through reading, listening, and conversation with feedback. But a good number of learners also seek explanation. I'm happy to accommodate different learners in my group classes and private lessons.

Hello, Jennifer. Hope you okay. I want to clarification in these cases. When I write "No. He will sleep until tomorrow", "NO, he will sleep until tomorrow" and "This is Dr. John", "This is Dr, John" What is the difference? Thak you,
@Englishwithjennifer7 жыл бұрын
1) Often we connect the yes-no answer when it's a reply to a yes-no question. Q: Is he sleeping? A: Yes, he is. However, if you're correcting someone's understanding, then you might have "no" stand alone. "Anthony is the president of the organization." - - "No. He's the vice-president. Amanda is the president." 2) Use a comma before the name of the person you're addressing: "These are the files you requested, Dr. Johnson." If you're naming someone, as in an introduction, no comma is needed: "This is Dr. Johnson." More on commas and other punctuation: kzbin.info/aero/PLfQSN9FlyB6Q8MTULKyIHzqKeXpBbxES6

Hello Siva. "Voice" in grammar refers to the quality of a verb and the focus we place on the subject. ACTIVE voice focuses on the subject doing an action. PASSIVE voice focuses on the subject receiving an action.

Possessive determiners (adjectives) are like possessive nouns: I am her husband. I am Mary's husband. Object pronouns will replace a noun: She gave her husband a car. > She gave him a car.

Mayday! I have a question! No= not a / not any. However, may I say, "I am no boy instead of I am not a boy." Please answer my silly one! Thanks.

I'm no.... (+ noun)= This is emphatic. I'm not a fan of beer. = statement I'm no fan of beer = more emphatic It's not a silly question. It's a good one. ;)

@@Englishwithjennifer dear there, you mean we still can say "I'm no boy (or other nouns). " to make it emphatic. Is that right?

Hi. I'd say those are adverbials, not complements. "Relaxing...and enjoying..." are reduced adverb clauses. They're now phrases. They had an amazing time while they relaxed on the beach and enjoyed water sports. >> omit the subject since it's the same as the subject in the main clause >> change the verbs to present participles to show an active meaning (rather than passive) >> They had an amazing time relaxing on the beach and enjoying water sports.
