He's correct. Headsmen's swords were actually not terribly sharp, but they were quite heavy - particularly at the end away from the hilt. That imbalance improved the executioner's aim and the weight increased the speed of the sword stroke. It was considered an honor to be executed by sword, rather than axe. Axes were regarded as a commoner's tool, while swords had always been the symbol of nobility. Fun fact: professional, skilled executioners were quite rare. Most were simply commoners, pressed into service. They were drawn from a sort of pool of those willing to do the work. Cromwell was so unpopular by the time he was executed, his enemies at court intentionally chose a known drunkard as his executioner. The guy showed up, stinking of booze and scarcely able to stand. It took him about a half dozen swings to take Cromwell's head.

Theory about Anne of Cleves was it was less about her being 'ugly' and more about Henry having impotence and realizing a marriage would reveal that.

I used to play Total War and yeah, it's a bitch to get excommunicated. Now I only play Europa Universalis. It doesn't suck as much to get excommunicated there, but it still does suck. But you typically solve it the way Henry did: "F U, Pope..."; and just convert to something else.

Of Henry VIII's wives, Anne of Cleves--the one he liked the least--ironically came out the most ahead. When Henry rejected her, instead of fighting for herself she simply agreed to keep quiet and do anything that Henry wanted if he'd give her a decent manor and payout. Henry was happy to get out of the marriage with such little trouble, and Anne lived the rest of her life in luxurious comfort.

16:23 you should check out "The Tudors" on Netflix, it basically sums up Henry's life as king... there's a quote that goes "SHE LOOKS LIKE A HORSE! A FLANDERS MARE! I LIKE HER NOT!" (referring to Anne of Cleves) tbh I thought the actress who portrayed Anne of Cleves was quite pretty but Henry still divorced her and married a freaking CHILD (Katherine Howard, whom I disliked the most😒)

Yes, Elizabeth R was a selfish woman. Being well-educated, she knew all too well about the horrible toll that Civil War took on the British people, and she DID NOT CARE. Instead of getting married and producing an heir, she SELFISHLY refused to marry and KNOWING that upon her death her nation would most likely be plunged into Civil War once more. Her mother, Anne, was also ambitious and put herself and her goals before what was best for England. We need to remember that women getting involved in politics is NEVER a good idea.
