The D sound doesn't disappear, but it is a stop consonant that I don't release. Check out the video on Stop Consonants. Also, I have a video on N'T contractions that might help explain the word 'don't'.

Yes, we have two glide consonants: [j] and [w]. You can think of the phrase you suggested as being: three yapples. 'Two honest' would link through a [w] sound.

@Phannaphai Are there words you're not sure how pronounce? Which ones are they? Sites like the Cambridge dictionary are good for that (make sure you're looking at the American English IPA!). As far as nuances, you could reduce 'has' by pronouncing it [əz]. And I would stress the words TEACHING, TWO, and YEARS.

This video linking the ending vowel of a word to the beginning vowel of another word has been enormously valuable to me. From now on, I think I'll be understanding more of Hollywood movies when I watch them. :) Thanks Rachel.

If you lips are round (o) at the end of the 1st word, we insert a /w/ sound: too /w/ often, who /w/ is, so /w/ I, do /w/ all, how /w/ are you do(w)ing. If you lips are wide (--) at the end of the 1st word, we insert a /y/ sound: I /y/ am, the /y/ end This applies in one word too: doing = do /w/ ing, radio= radi /y/ o

Hello Rachel. How do you pronounce "Do you" I know normally Americans would say "Dya" but what if you don't reduce to the vowels to schwas. Do you need the ''w'' to link those words together like this "Do-w-you?" Thank you so much.
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! If you fully pronounced both of these words and linked them together, you still wouldn't hear a W consonant sound due to the Y consonant that would start as you are relaxing your lips after the OO as in BOO vowel.

Hi Rachel, your lesson is great and it does help me a lot. When I practice saying the examples, I notice that I pronounce the /j/ and /w/ too clearly. It makes the word sound more like Woody Yallen. Do you think that I should link words more subtly?
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for your comment! It is hard to tell you to be more subtle without hearing how you are sounding - but if you listen to my example in the video - you will hear that the Y consonant sound is actually pretty clear when I'm linking the two words together. So, it actually will sound just find to have a clear Y sound in between those words!

@rachelsenglish 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! For 'draw a' you'll just move directly from the AW as in LAW vowel into a schwa sound with no break in sound. Just smoothly move your articulators from the AW as in LAW vowel position into the schwa position. You can hear examples of this here: youglish.com/pronounce/%22draw%20a%22/english/us?

Hi, I'm doing well! You have a few options for these links. For "do you", most of the time I will just try to connect as smoothly as possible between the OO in "do" and the Y in "you" (with the option to reduce either word). For "what was", most of the time I will drop T, and link the UH sound in "what" to the W in "was". More on linking on my playlist here: kzbin.info/aero/PLrqHrGoMJdTTaj_eEk5kITau40ykdanQB
