Have you ever stopped and wondered why things are the way they are? I find it really fascinating how many things we do in our daily lives that are just accepted and they're rarely questioned.. It's just the done thing! And if you do something differently, something out of the ordinary, it can create confusion, or angst or frustration among the people around you. At best, you create minor discomfort. But at worst you face backlash and you're shunned from your family or your social circle! Messing with what is socially acceptable can be brutal! But what is accepted and totally normal here might be at odds with what's acceptable where you are. And that's why it's so fascinating when two sets of social norms clash. You know... it really makes people confused or awkward because technically. in that situation, neither of them is doing anything wrong. They're both doing what's expected of them in their culture! And that is totally normal. But the other person is like... Really shocked! I'll give you an example. Here in Australia, it is really common to greet friends whit a hug and a kiss. A kiss. Now, it's hilarious when you get introduced to an Italian or Brazilian in a social context because they go in for a double kiss! And in some countries, it's even a triple kiss! But that little interaction can be so confusing and awkward. It's the meeting of two different social norms, And I mean... How strange is it when you hear a women asked a man to marry her! Why is that so strange? It's just not the done thing! It's not the norm so it confuses us! If you stop and think for a minute there are so many of these situations, things that we never question because it's just the way things are!

Our Emma is a great fan of imitation technique. She proposes this with high conviction. Practically, if I do not travel abroad, shadowing is the only available method to learn speaking. It is not a magic wand, but it makes me to have a reliable tool to learn speaking skills. When I follow Emma's advice, I do not waste my time. That's for sure. Loved the lesson! I'm going to enter in a advanced english course, but I'm a little bit afraid. I mean, I did the test to know which level of English I am and the result was advanced. But as I've improved my English by myself, I kind off just focused in Grammar and my vocabulary it's more or less in the transition from the intermediate to the advancing. So I'm trying to improve my vocabulary as much as I can. I still have at least 30 days to do it and, oh my Gosh, your lessons are helping me so much! If a country is collectivist, such as Philippines (my country), it's not our norm to greet someone with a kiss. Instead we have "pagbebeso" where you and the other person touch each other's cheek. We also have "pagmamano" where you bow towards the offered hand of an elder and it is pressed on your forehead. Hugging is also common for friends and family members. Shaking of hands and bowing slightly with one's head are gestures of greetings towards someone you are not close with
