This is the first part in a miniseries of three parts (*NOTE: Unfortunately, I DO NOT have access to parts 2 and 3) which details the disastrous sinking of the roll-on/roll-off ferry Estonia in 1994, which happened 25 years ago (give or take a couple of days, thanks KZbin -.-) when the ship was en route to Sweden from Estonia in 1994. I was eleven years old at the time, but still remember the impact it had.
This first part is titled "The Survivors' Tale" and is a documentary consisting of interviews with some of the survivors, the captains and rescue workers as well as actual video footage and radio com-traffic from the night in question.
I noticed that there weren't any translated versions on KZbin so I took it upon myself to do the actual translating; I did my best to as accurately as possible add english subtitles as a means to get the documentary out to an international audience because I think it is one of the most vivid and horrific tales of a maritime catastrophe in the modern age that's been made; well worthy of being spread beyond the boundaries of the nordic countries.
And yes, even though I am usually meticulously concerned with correctness regarding translation, in retrospect I have noticed that quite a lot of spelling errors, gramatical mishaps and a few reference errors (for instance, at 9:11, it's supposed to be 4th floor, not 5th) did in fact slip into the final version, but it will have to do; the result is more or less passable.
Originally broadcast on TV4 in Sweden in 2002, created by Johan Brandhammer and Maria Carlshamre and all rights reserved in the name of TV4 and SPIFF AB; this is mainly for spreading awareness, I do not gain from this in any way.

Im amazed that people were able to escape the ship and then survive. Such a small number of people who survived too. What a horrific disaster, and such brave people.

At school, We had a headmistress who I'm sure that must have had Servicemen in her Family, if ever the weather was bad, we would sing in assembly {aged 5} ''For Those in Peril on the Sea''... The Sea is an unforgiving element, for sure. Mighty and powerful.

For people trying to hunt down the other parts, the title in Swedish is "Estonia: Livlinan som brast" so that's what you should search for

Honestly, I don't know. Something in the production. I can imagine two possible reasons; either someone or several people who managed to survive requested to not be shown on camera, or the next of kin of people who died requested that their relatives not be put out there.

I'm sorry but the response was slow by everyone on this ship. I don't know if I was traumatized when I learned about the Titanic as a child, but I am on high alert anytime I board any ship. If I felt any swaying-storm or not-I'm keeping on my clothes, my life vest, and I'm staying near the deck where the lifeboats are located. The way people just trust that the staff had everything handled & went to bed calmly is insane. I can't even sleep during turbulence on a plane. The guy who made the distress calls was the worst because he never made it clear that the ship was sinking when he made the mayday call. More people could have been rescued.

I disagree. They ferries and helicopters came immediately to help. There was nothing anyone could’ve done to make it faster. Also, in all the countries around the Baltic, people are very used to travel by ferry. To some people, this was part of their job. So it’s not strange that people wouldn’t have suspected anything to go wrong.

it was hit by a submarine which then when onto the right side of the ship. this explains the bow visor damage and why the damage is on the right side AND the right side hole on the ship. it was probably sank by the russians due to them already warning about transporting military. this also explains how the ship almost stopped moving a bit when the big blow to the bow came. the sub and the ship collided so it effected the movement of both.

Or maybe bad things in life happen and not everything can be attributed to malaise. People spewing crazy theories, completely unsubstantiated by any evidence, defile the memory of what was a tragedy for thousands of families. I get that people want to believe that bad stuff doesn’t just happen. That there was someone in control, even with evil intentions. Because the idea that these things can just randomly happen is scary. But it is insulting to pester us with it.

@@TheWolfwiththeDragon the problem is, from the very start the governments and info have been questionable about it. the signs on the ship itself point towards a sub, the reports they say dont. which means its up for speculation if theyre telling the truth or not. governments and people do lie, propaganda still exists.
