Amazing! I have never come across such an English lesson as this. The nuances of language expressions are extremely difficult, but you have done it with a mesmerizing and magical touch! The pace, accent style, examples etc. are extremely appropriate and suitable for the learners to comprehend well. Please continue to deliver more. Thanks a lot.

Thank you so very much!!! I wondered this topic all my life. I am very knowledgeble in English Grammar, but this topic always confused me, ...not all of it, though, .....just the minor details. I appreciate your bringing up this subject and teaching very well on top of that. I will watch your other videos too. I hope you teach specific things like this topics, not the topics that everybody else teaches. We know the general topics already. The problem is tricky topics like this one.

A very good explanation. I've noticed an interesting difference between British and American speakers ( also in Spanish between Spanish and Latinamerican speakers ). In a number of cases Americans would use the past tense when Europeans tend to use the present perfect. Life in America is faster and less reflective, it seems. An example: An American would rather say: I did it today ( the moment when I did it is finished ) whereas a Brit: I've done it ( the result: It's done for today ). This is a matter of perception. In Spanish: Lo he hecho hoy. Latinamerican Spanish: Lo hice hoy. I've come across this in a number of occasions

I have never heard an explanation on this in this way. thank you so much! I would love to know what tense to use when talking about a famous person in the past. Sometimes I also noticed when talking about a past story, people would use simple present tense. I'm so confused.
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 2 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome, Sonia! Use the Past Simple if the person has passed away. Otherwise, it can be any tense depending on the information. This is called historic/narrative Present Simple. It's used to make stories and jokes come alive for more effect.

This is the only video I’ve found so far that tackles this topic with more accuracy. Thank you very much!!! However, I’m still a bit confused. For example, what tense should I use for the following text-the present perfect or the past simple? "Today, I have been to London to do some shopping, then I have met my parents on Oxford Street, and we have drunk some coffee at a fancy café. Later, we have watched a film at home." I have shown it to a couple of native speakers, and they both have told me to use the past simple instead. Perhaps it is because they are considering the succession of events as activities done in the active part of the day? Could you help me, please?
@AngloLinkEnglish
@AngloLinkEnglish 2 күн бұрын
Hello , I'm glad this lesson has to some extent clarified the difference between these two confusing tenses. Indeed, once you start breaking down a completed action until now into its smaller parts, you must use Past Simple even if the exact time frame in the past is not specified; the main action acts as a time frame, and even that action can itself be put into the Past Simple tense: I've been / I went to London today to do some shopping. (During my time in London) I met ... We drank ... Then we watched ..., Later we did

It's my first exposure to your class. Got hooked from the word Go. I haven't had a better lesson all my life on the difference between the two senses. In fact, I feel English grammarians spend half their lifespan understanding the difference and the other half explaining it. There are countless posts on KZbin on this topic, each one leaving you more confused than before. Your USP is that you do have a very clear notion of what you want to convey and you do it without beating about the bush. You have covered all the possible scenarios with respect to today and this morning. While you were explaining the different scenarios, I was wondering what if I began my sentence during my active day and it ended just after the end of my day. Would I have to an emergency switch from the present perfect to the past indefinite 😁😁 If anything beats the glorious uncertainties of cricket, your national pastime, it is the nightmarish ambiguities of your grammar. It must be out of sheer exasperation that the inhabitants of New England decided (oops..have decided) to give the Present perfect (perfect indeed...there couldn't be a greater misnomer for this imperfect tense) tense a quiet burial. On a serious note, great class Madam. A huge help to non-native speakers like yours truly.

Thank you so much for this lesson of yours! I'd like to ask you if we could also have said (with reference to your examples): I had been answering all afternoon. (instead of "was answering") I've been having a great time this evening. (instead of "I've had") I think the continuous forms put emphasis on the duration of the action. Thanks a lot in advance! You're a great teacher!

My pleasure! 1. I would only use the Past Perfect Continuous if I were mentioning another action as well: I'd been answering emails all afternoon before/when I was called into a meeting at 6. 2. Yes, you can use 'have been doing' but only if the evening is in full swing. I wouldn't use it if you were about to say goodbye.

Thanks for the explanation! I have a question if you don't mind, at 7:58 , can I say " I had been answering emails all afternoon" ? and the reason why I am using this tense is that I am talking about an action that had been happening for a while in the past with a time reference and it ended

@@AngloLinkEnglish Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate it. So, we need two related actions in the sentence to use the past perfect continuous. Thanks! I would be so happy if you could make a video about the differences and similarities between the past continuous and past perfect continuous cause I think we can use them interchangeably in some cases.

Hello Asia, I tend to focus on 'using grammar in conversation' rather than clarifying grammatical terms. I'm sure you'll find many good sources if you just Google 'difference between phrase and clause'.

(From England) "I was answering emails all afternoon" sounds like something a foreigner would say, unless the speaker was providing an alibi. Normally one would say "I spent the afternoon answering emails". Is this different in America?

Thanks for the additional usage tip. I believe it's the same in American English.
