Even though these words are very close to each other in spelling, it's best to observe the distinctions that separate beside vs. besides. Beside is a preposition that means nearby; at the side of. Besides is an adverb and a preposition and means in addition to; as well and apart from. Beside, without the s, tells us the location of something. Besides, on the other hand, means “in addition,” “in addition to,” “moreover,” or “as well,”,

Saying "Besides the point" sounds better with the added "S" in it, regardless of the possibly grammatical rules that may have been there in the past because the English language is always changing and the letter "S" makes it easier to say and makes it sounds better, which is what I care about more than the proper English rules. I teach English in Vietnam for the past 12 months and beyond. I tell people that I teach my own version of English.

Hi Emma, so appreciate your efforts to help people acquire knowledge. One of the common mistakes I see is in the use improper use of plural personal pronouns where singular personal pronouns are grammatically correct. Example: Each member of my care team identified themselves and their role in my care. The correct version should be: Each member of my care team identified himself and his role in my care. The word “each” is singular and deserves a singular pronoun reference. Also, the words “himself” and “his” in this context are gender neutral, i.e. they are not gender specific/not sexually discriminatory. What say you. dear lady?
