As a Brazilian doctor she has never heard of such a thing. How frustrating is that! I love it. It makes English so American. Maybe, because I'm 53 I can't do it. My teen students CAN. Good observation! I wouldn't use EH here though. This vowel is affected by the R, so it ends up sounding like AIR. More on this sound here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXuwqHx5ZtKoj9Usi=ex8Y2HA8VD0oxOSk. More examples of English speakers saying "parent" here: youglish.com/pronounce/parent/english?

What to do when a person is neither a he or a she? It would be helpful to mention to newcomers to English in North America that we have some options for gender-neutral family terms, keeping in mind that gender nonbinary and intersex people exist! For example, if the gender of the person is unknown (or immaterial), you could just refer to a person's sister or brother as sibling. Additionally, if the gender of the person is nonbinary, calling them a sister or brother would be binary (and that could be offensive, at least to some), so call them sibling. For girlfriend/boyfriend, a gender-neutral term is partner - it's like the word spouse, but doesn't necessarily mean married (spouse indicates marriage). To refer to a nonbinary parent, simply use parent rather than mother or father, and refer to children as children, or offspring, rather than sons and daughters. I know Rachel was giving examples from her own lovely wonderful family, but keep in mind some families fall on the LGBTIAQ+ spectrum!

I don't know why, but to my ears , the schwa sound in the second syllable in the words *husband* */'hʌz.bənd/* and cousin */'kʌ.zən/* sounds more likely the */ɪ/* as in *sit* vowel. Oh boy, I wonder if ears decieve me. Am I gonna be misunderstood if I pronounced husband as */'hʌz.bɪnd/* or */'kʌ.zɪn/* ? What do you think?
@rachelsenglish3 жыл бұрын
Hi! You will not be misunderstood! The IH as in SIT vowel when pronounced as an unstressed syllable sounds incredibly similar to the schwa sound - they are basically interchangeable in those cases!

Rachel, 🥰 😘 it is so wonderful that your extended family is so *_normal_* and so loving...unlike the sad story of this extended family: 😂 🤣 "Many, many years ago when I was twenty three I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her and soon the two were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life. My daughter was my mother, for she was my father’s wife. To complicate the matters worse, although it brought me joy, I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became a brother-in-law to my dad and so became my uncle. That thought made me sad, for if he were my uncle, then that also made him brother to the widow's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my step-mother. Father’s wife then had a son who kept them on the run and he was my grandson, for he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue because, although she is my wife, she is my grandma too. If my wife is my grandmother, then I am her grandchild and every time I think of it it simply drives me wild, for now I have become the strangest case you ever saw: As the husband of my grandmother I am my own grandpa." 😂 🤣
