for me, this is the most important area of pronunciation: the vowel sound.

Hi Denise, Thank you for the video. I have a question about OW sound. Can this sound be pronounced in both ways: /ɑʊ/ or /æʊ/? The other day when I said "discount", my audience didn't understand me and in the end she pronounced this word as /æʊ/. And just now I repeated this word to myself my usual way, I noticed that my pronunciation was /ɑŋ/. I think I just substituted /ɑŋ/ sound for /ɑʊn/ sound and my tongue didn't touch the upper teeth back. Does your tongue touch the behind of upper teeth when you are doing /n/ sound after /ʊ/ sound or even when you are doing /ʊ/ sound? It's hard for me to make the nasal words by touching upper teeth back because in my mother tongue I make nasal sounds without touching too, which I just realized now. Thank you in advance!

First of all, I'm sorry for my very late reply! You asked if /ɑʊ/ can be pronounced /æʊ/. I would have to say yes, but it's not the standard pronunciation. There are many dialects in the U.S. and therefore many variations. You can hear the same word pronounced in different ways. Yes, my tongue touches behind my upper teeth when I say "discount." Thanks for watching my videos!

I don't know way *boy* is written like /ɔɪ/ because I hear /ʊɪ/. Am I right? Let me know please. Thank you in advance.
@Coopos8 жыл бұрын
Dictionaries transcribe boy as /bɔɪ/ and it does sound that way to me. But different people do pronounce the same word in different ways sometimes. You may be hearing boy pronounced as /bʊɪ/ by the people around you.

hi Denise i always like you lessens thy are the best one question i watch some other video and they say that aʊ start with æ rather then o as not it that wrong
@Coopos7 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank you for your comments. I'm glad to hear that you like my lessons. I think this sound starts with /ɑ/ as in not. Maybe other speakers pronounce this sound differently and start with their mouth open wide as in /æ/.
@hafidboudar21667 жыл бұрын
ok thank i will always use /ɑ/ as you said
@rdococ3 жыл бұрын
I'm a native English speaker, and the /a/ in /aʊ/ sounds completely different from the /a/ in /aɪ/. The first one sounds a lot more like /æ/, and the second is more like /ɑ/. I don't know how the two can be mixed up.
