"Beats me ,break a leg" . I'm not gonna use this to someone😂
@treetrunkbitch8 ай бұрын
You should - it’s fine! I’m a native English speaker (from Scotland). No one really says break a leg, it’s seen as quite old fashioned. And beats me - people say that all the time (though it’s got an Americanised feel to it when someone says it over here)

Advanced idioms sre mostly heard in Hollywood movies.
@anastassiasoldaeva83844 ай бұрын
I am afraid that this "advanced" English is very an appropriate for professional people. English is not my mother tongue but I feel that if I use these phrases with my patients I will have problems. I didn't know that advanced language is slang :)
@TheoTheWulf6 ай бұрын
Hey, Native English speaker and Tutor here. I think it's important to specify that the "advanced" english is slang, it is colloquial and can be found mainly in the United Kingdom. it is okay to use either and even I personally use the "normal" column of english more than any of the slang on the right.
@einfacherkerl32796 ай бұрын
is it considered good English to use slangs?
@BB-yr4md6 ай бұрын
Thank you for pointing this out. It was bothering me that slang should be considered "advanced". Unless it's meant that advanced learners use these as they understand the context or circumstance in which they can be used.
@BB-yr4md6 ай бұрын
It's not "good", or "bad", it's a style of English (informal) that is best suited to the appropriate situations. For example, it's acceptable to use casual language around your friends or people who know you well but not acceptable in a formal situation such as a work function, a conversation with your superiors or when writing a report where one is expected to be more polite / formal. Hope that helps? 🤗🇿🇦
@oksamak93142 ай бұрын
Thank you ❤for pointing that out, because at first it was strange for me,now I guess will use it sometimes, I don't like much slang at any language

Break a leg is actually theatre slang. Actors are a superstitious lot; and it's considered bad luck to actually wish someone good luck before they go on stage.

It is important to know that "chop chop" is pretty much going to be rude unless you know that person very well, and "break a leg" is VERY SPECIFIC to someone performing in a play or musical!

This isnt really slang though. They are somewhat casual but, it wouldnt be rude to use these with your boss or coworkers. Except for "chop chop" but thats rude in most situations regardless of who you are talking to.

@@eviewight5703hurry up also has a negative connotation in basically every situation. Typically, native English speakers will say “can you hurry up?” As a softer way of asking someone to move faster.
