This boy was right: in Poland, during the carnival (in Catholicism, this is the period of great fun before Lent, which in turn precedes Easter, and Good Friday is the last day of Lent), we first have the last Tuesday (so called "ostatki") of the carnival (and the last balls or other dances), then Fat Thursday (and we eat a lot of pączki and other great Fat Thursday cookies - faworki), and the next week is Ash Wednesday - the first day of Lent. The length of the carnival depends on what day Easter is in a given year. Carnival always starts on December 31 (New Year's Eve, St. Sylvester's Day). In Poland we simply call this evening and night sylwester (sylvester) and for example we ask: "How will you spend sylwester, at home or are you going to a party somewhere?"

I can also add that Fat Thursday isn't still celebrated mainly as event before Lent. It mostly changed into civil, commercial event but it still come from this tradition.

And fat thursday is on thursday because in the past before the ash wednesday, fat thursday started fat week when people had eaten only fat foods like lard, speck and meat, which were strictly forbidden during lent.

The difference between polish donut and UK donut is obvious. The dough. When you squeeze polish donut, it comes back to its previous shape. When you squeeze Sainsbury's donut, it stays like that. Polish donut is more fluffy, mostly you can smell yeast. And the feeling, in UK quite thin consistency, in Poland strawberry, raspberry or plum marmolade it's thick, and that does the job.

Actually during Lent we do not practice any special fasts (it used to be like this many years ago, nowadays sometimes some people say that they don't eat sweets in Lent, but it's just their own individual practice). We just go to church on Ash Wednesday. And during the Lent there are some special prayings in churches, especially the Way of the Cross (the Stations of the Cross). And there's also another special praying - called "Gorzkie Żale" ("Bitter Lamentations") - which is interesting because it consists of old traditional hymns, coming from the beginning of the XVIIIth century, that are still sung in churches during this period (so they are interesting not only because of religion, but also as a part of cultural heritage).

Why Poles celebrate fat Thursday: The origins of Fat Thursday date back to paganism. It was a day to celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Feasting was based on eating fatty foods, especially meat, and drinking wine, and the snack consisted of donuts made of bread dough and stuffed with bacon.

Doughnuts like food exists already since Roman times and spread around Europe. Some with rings, some filled. The 'modern' filled ones around the world are usually based on the 'Berliner Pfannkuchen' (thats what you usually also get in the UK at the super market) which spread around in the second half of the 18. century from Prussia/Berlin and since then many variations exists around the world (the ones in Australia, Canada, US are sometimes still called 'Berlin doughnuts', sometimes 'Bismarks', sometimes mutated to other names) with different recipes and names. The name 'Berliner Pfannkuchen' got shorten over time in Germany to 'Berliner' while in Berlin to 'Pfannkuchen' ('pancakes' but its not like the 'usual pancakes' which also exists). It is based on a recipe with the name 'Berliner Pfannkuchen' from the 'Praktisches Hausbuch' (practical housebook) by Henriette Davidis 1847. Thats also the one which uses often powder (but you get that also with glazed or iced). I wrote 'modern'; because there were already all kind of different other Doughnuts variations around (but done in a different way). For instance the cookbook Küchenmeisterei (Mastery of the Kitchen), published in Nuremberg in 1485, offers a recipe for "Gefüllte Krapfen" (filled Krapfen/'Doughnut'), sugar free, stuffed, fried dough cakes. The first record of a jelly doughnut appeared in the Polish translation (Kuchmistrzostwo) of a German cookbook published in 1532. It is uncertain whether or not that was the precise date of the jelly doughnut's invention. Known then as 'Gefüllte Krapfen', it spread throughout Europe over the next century, sometimes with other fillings considering sugar and jelly was sparsely found at the time, but Caribbean sugar plantations made both more widely available. The Polish ' pączki' is based on that (but not every variation!). Keep in mind again: many 'Krapfen' or filled Doughnuts even if the names appears similar are often NOT a variation of those older recipes but on the 'modern' recipe of the 'Berliner Pfannkuchen' or later recipies which are based on that! In the 16. century you had especaly in Northern Germany, Netherlands, Denmark etc. certain variations around which the Dutch then brought to America (as 'oily cake' - olykoek) where it changed to the 'Ring Donut' (the name 'Nuts' was due to some British influences and discribed the at irst smaller ball like shape) which became then the typical American Donut variation.

the 'Fat Thursday' exists also in other European countries, sometimes with the same name (e.g. in Italy, some regions of Germany etc.), sometimes with different names (other regions of Germany and other countries). in Germany you have variations like 'Weiberfastnacht' (similar in the Netherlands), 'Silly thursday' or 'Dirty Thursday' ('dirty' refers here to 'sin'), 'Heavy Thursday' and so on. The Thursday before the carnival days start (uually 11:11 am). As far as I know in all those countries Christian traditions mixed usually with some older traditions to something new, depending on the regions of Europe which means: the Polish one also has its unique flavor/tradition and is different to for instance the one before the Carnival in Cologne (or other German regions) to the one in Spain, Greece, Italy etc.

I am 100% Slavic. Fat Thursday is a pre-Christian holiday. "Fat Thursday" "Shrovetide" "Podkoziołek" are holidays that have the same origin as carnival. over 3,000 years ago, our ancestors lived next door to the Hellenes and then the Romans. These were the times before the great migration north. We lived by farming, hunting and fishing in the Black Sea. Stockpiles were made for the winter, but they ended at the turn of February and March. That's why people celebrated by collecting the rest of what was stored for feasting. Then, until spring and the first harvest, they ate hunted game or dairy products from farm animals, and the first green plants were harvested in spring. Fasting preceded by feasts and feasts comes from this practice. Christians took over these customs naturally because they were unable to unlearn our old customs. When we lived next to the Romans, some of our customs were common - before Lent, we made balls of bread dough and put inside fried bacon and onion left from our supplies. We fried these stuffed bread balls in fat and that's how the first donuts were created. About 200 years ago, when refined sugar appeared, we started making sweet donuts because previously they were dry and salty.

Potem sie go odwraca, ale obraczka zostaje.

How to recognize which one is most traditional and actually the best? It's simple really. It should be dark brown with a ring of course. No matter what filling inside. It's because only these are fried in animal fat (lard) and not in vegetable oil. It makes a huge difference in taste. I know a bakery that uses this recipe and queue of people starts at 4:00 am that Thursday. As you can see most of paczki shown are light brown. It means a vegetable oil. It's cheaper to use

In my region, Fat Thursday is celebrated together with Babski Comber - a folk celebration of Shrovetide originating from the Middle Ages, which used to take place in various regions of Poland, usually on Fat Thursday. The most detailed records of this custom have been preserved only in the case of celebrations in Krakow, where street vendors organized a party with drinking and dancing in the Market Square. This custom may have come to Poland in the Middle Ages and was brought by German settlers. Alexander Brückner believed that the word comber comes from the German language, from the word Schemper (mask) or zampern (running in masks). Zygmunt Gloger mentions a similar game organized by village girls in the Poznań region, called cumber or cumper. In turn, in Lusatia there is a carnival custom called Zampern or Zempern.

Fat Thursday is the equivalent of Mardi Gras or Pancake Tuesday and it's indeed the day of indulging yourself before the upcoming season of fasting and repentace - the Lent. Now, I saw you were confused hearing about the "carnival". The word "karnawał" (translated as carnival) refers to the season between the Epiphany (6th Jan) to Ash Wednesday, and it describes the period of merrymaking, partying and feasting. It obviously ends with Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.

According to tradition, on the last Thursday before Lent you can eat donuts and other sweets with impunity. Eating donuts is said to bring good luck. 🤔 And you can make donuts yourself. It's easy. I know because I tried.😂😂😂 And when it comes to people on a diet, there is no diet on Fat Thursday. 😊

Fat Thursday - the last Thursday before Lent (i.e. 52 days before Easter) in the Christian calendar. Also known as Shrovetide, Meatpust, Carnival. Fat Thursday begins the last week of carnival. In Poland and in the Catholic part of Germany, according to tradition, overeating is allowed on this day. Date Since the date of Fat Thursday depends on the date of Easter, this day is a moveable feast. The next Thursday is the Thursday after Ash Wednesday and belongs to the period of Lent, during which Christians, for religious (penitential) reasons, in preparation for Easter, should observe fasting, i.e. abstinence from eating certain foods. It may fall between January 29 and March 4. For the first time in the history of the calendar, on February 14, 2075, Fat Thursday will also be celebrated - Holiday Calendar. The most popular dishes are donuts and faworki, also called chrust or caddis in some regions. In the past, people ate donuts stuffed with bacon, bacon and meat, and drank plenty of vodka.

Shrove Tuesday - this word refers to the last days of the carnival beginning on Fat Thursday and always ending on Tuesday, before Ash Wednesday. See carnival in Rio for the same reason. The original paczki usually were made with prunes and later with rose jam (made of rose pedals) and during the communism era with marmalade ( Marmalade - sweetened fruit concentrate made from puréed fruit, fresh or, more often, after the sulfitation process, which is cooked with a large amount of sugar (more than 50% of the weight of the ingredients). Marmalade can be prepared from the fruit of one or more species of fruit).

As a child, I really liked small (4-5 cm) spherical doughnuts without any jam, just with icing. Today I prefer with rosehip or chocolate 😉

I have a friend who's family owe a small, but very old confectionery in Wrocław near rynek. The history of this place started in 30's in completely different city. After war they moved to Wrocław and survived all communistic times till now. And they are most famous from donuts, as there was a time they had no space to bake anything else. And I'm saying this cause this year I ate there best donut ever with flavour of pistachios, when I'm even not a pistachio fan at all. You have to try it if you visit Wrocław next time! The place is called Łomżanka :) 🍩💈 And by the way I have a birthday this weekend, and some years they are same day as fatty thursday. Could you imagine better day for this? 😂 The only problem is with finding some birthday cake that day. So last time when it happened I decided to make myself a donut birthday cake xD 🍩🎂

What is a donut? Donut is a type of deep-fried "pączek" , which differs from the Polish one in the lack of filling and a characteristic hole in the middle. And the ingredients are also important. Most American donuts you can buy in stores contain flavor enhancers, preservatives, artificial colors... Traditional Polish donuts contain only natural ingredients!

Muslims used to feast before sunset and then they used to fast during Ramadan. Catholics used to feast on Fat Thursday or Mardis Gras and and they entertain themselves every last day of a carnival before Lent. Religion slowly wanes, tradition remains.

The origins of Fat Thursday date back to paganism. It was a day to celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Feasting was based on eating fatty foods, especially meat, and drinking wine, and the snack consisted of donuts made of bread dough and stuffed with bacon. In this way, the Romans celebrated the so-called Fat Day. Around the 16th century, the custom of eating sweet donuts appeared in Poland. They still looked slightly different than today - they had a small nut or almond hidden inside. Whoever found such a lucky donut was supposed to enjoy prosperity, happiness and success.

I dont like glazed or powdered pączki. Glazed is sticky, and it melts. Powered sugar drops everywhere. Best pączki are covered in chocolate.

Polish doughnuts are more fluffy. Western ones are made from heavier dough. Unfortunately many Polish bakeries are churning out garbage for doughnuts and charge arms and legs for it.

Rob, every country has its own holidays, and a lot of people don't even know where or why they come from. Is it Thanksgiving in the US? Is. Americans know why? Know. But why do they pack some shit into an ostrich-sized turkey that makes this dish inedible? I have a cousin in the U.S. and we discussed this topic. I suggested a simple recipe that he should check on regular chicken before he buys a turkey and treats it as such. It's a big surprise that you can do it differently and tastier.

Tłusty Czwartek to ostatni dzień karnawału. Następny dzień to początek postu przed Wielkanocą.
