when I was a kid we all carried pocket knives, I remember many a Saturday whittling down branches to make bows and arrows even at a very young age - if kids did that now now health and safety would have a sh*tfit - back then we all carried handkerchiefs too.... no one ever would dream of stabbing each other with a knife - as a youngster back then I found the locking ones were actually safer to use as the blade couldnt close on your fingers - how times have changed

Agree times have changes, I was a Sea Scout, a sheath knife and a marlin spike was part of the uniform routinely worn on church parade. Remember going camping where I was taught how to use both a machete and a felling axe.

I remember as a teenager in the Scouts, we were allowed to carry a 6" sheathed blade on our belt. We obviously used these to cut things and were taught how to use them. We were also taught how to use an axe. Guess they have changed that by now.

Would it then be correct to say, if asked, that the reason for having such an item about a person is simply that it is entirely legal to do so? Or would it be better to say that no reason for possession is required (given that it breaks no law)? Or to remain silent on the matter?

What about the knifeless rebar from leatherman with a locking awl and saw, so many sites say they are uk EDC legal but I'm pretty sure an awl and saw that locks doesn't fall under the folding exemption, I could be wrong however. Even my 12 year old son reckoned it was "dodgy", appreciate you don't give advice here but wondered what your thoughts were. ;)

If you watched the video you'd understand, if you have a purpose for carrying the leatherman, you can still legally do so. Who on earth would want to go around carrying one on their hip when out to the shops? It looks somewhat "special". For daily carry like that I have used a victorinox sak for the last 3 decades. I have a Bantam on my car keys but always on my person I carry a Classic SD and despite its diminutive nature it's done everything I've asked of it. I can't say I've ever needed my leatherman when out and about on the street. Equally despite using them for over 2 decades, I can't say I've missed a locking blade either when needing a knife out and about. If you're cutting something with the blunt edge of the knife, you're doing it wrong and if I'm doing anything heavy duty where I know I will want a fixed blade, say out hunting on a permission (rabbit guts do gunk up the folding mechanisms of knives wonderfully) then it's legal for me to bring a nice sharp fixed blade knife.

If youy need a multitool you can get some bladeless ones, but yeah... It's still messed up.

@@lmaoroflcopter I've worked in more than one place where they have a no blade policy (Ocado for instance) and that's where the bladeless multitool comes into play. Other than that there are also different models from the same brand that have blades that can, or not, be considered "locking blades". Point in case, the Leatherman Kick that I've had for over a decade. It's an entry level model that has a blade that technically doesn't lock, but it's very effective in a stabby stabby motion type thing. Would that be legal? I can open and close it just like the blades in the video and its lenght is within the limit so can I EDC it with no issues?

@ providing it's blade is under 3 inches and it doesn't lock it's fair game and you can carry it without needing a purpose (few other caveats but he goes over them in the video) I worked in B&Q and used a Stanley knife (retractable but it locked in position) every day. Ocado may have a no knife policy but that's ocado, not the UK. If you need a blade, you can use a blade.

We really need to change the mindset in this country, a knife is a tool. Never in my life have I viewed it as anything else, having said that it's always been a pocket knife of not more than 3" cutting edge and non locking I've had in my pocket. I also had it instilled into me by my father how to properly behave and use it.

I live in the USA. I have carried a pocket knife since about 1991. There are just too many uses for one to not have it handy. The blade size which works best for my uses is about 3 3/8", and 1/2 of the blade is serrated, which works real well for cutting rope. The overall length is "too long" in most communities, according to their ordinances, but I have never been questioned about my tool. It also has a locking blade so that I don't ever have to worry about it closing on my fingers when using it. The fact that this feature is illegal in UK is crazy. It is a safety feature for the person using it.

I think many people do get it and have been brought up that way, me included. I always chuckle when I think back to my time in the Scouts. We'd go on a camp every summer to various places around the UK and usually during our time there the whole troop would end up walking into town. I can picture us now, 30-40 kids 11-16 years old marching into the local market town in our uniforms with 6 and 8 inch Bowies hanging off our belts. Never thought much of it at the time. Not long after I left school, around the age of 17, I got sent on an outward bound course in South Wales. I took a lock knife with me, just a natural thing to do when going out in the wilds. There were another group of kids there from the East End of London and they couldn't believe I was allowed to have a knife on me. I saw it as a tool, they saw it as a weapon. It's about upbringing, environment, education.

@@MrAl68 - Good story. I was an Assistant Scout Master for 5 years while my son was in Scouts. It was a ball. I agree. It must be upbringing. I too never thought of a pocket knife as a weapon. I've never carried anything larger. After 4 years of martial arts training I thought of my hands, elbows, feet, and knees as weapons, but only for defense. Even after that training I never thought of my pocket knife as a weapon. I did train with a bow staff, so if there is a broom handle around, THAT is a weapon, ironically. Still though, only for defense. Even the handgun I carry, I never think of it as an offensive weapon. Only defense, which I hope I will never have to use.

@@1001Hobbies Having had a non locking knife when cutting rope spring out and then cut my finger to the the bone and living in the UK I still when fishing and sailing carry a locking blade so I agree - I prefer my fingers to be whole and that's the point of a locking blade mind you when i was young and in the scouts part of the uniform we had to wear was a sheaf knife pretty sure that was over 3" but back then we used to go to camp with felling axes and chop trees down which these days would horrify health and safety peeps

@@steamboatwillie8517 - Assuming you mean Solicitor (You wouldn't need a Barrister unless it went to Crown Court), I never use one. Always had bad advice, to the point I'm convinced they work for the Magistrates. Handcuffs are possible, but only until a Serg. gets on scene (although I'm well known enough that most don't bother anymore, they know I respect the game). Most Constables will double check rather than risk an unlawful arrest, as long as you explain in a polite manner and don't act like an idiot. Worst case scenario is a quick trip to see the Desk Serg. at the custody suite and laughing whilst he gives the arresting Officer a dressing down for being an idiot. Usually you get an apology, a lift to where you were originally heading, and anything else they feel will stop you from officially complaining. I even got a McDonald's once.

I had a look over the new laws a while back, and there is a "loophole" for swords. "There is also an exemption for swords with a curved blade of 50cm or longer covered by the prohibition that were made before 1954 or those made at any time by traditional methods by hand” So in other words a blacksmith can still arm you 😂

That's an exemption for Sikh ceremonial blades (kirpan).

In my experience the old bill will confiscate anything they want with a sharp edge legal or not. My local force have a twitter page where they show all the knives they've confiscated, they're frequently 3 inch slip joints that your grandad might have had. I'm not entirely convinced they actually know what the letter of the law is in many instances.

Its a plastic handle and has a stanley blade in the end to scrape the window. After 20 mins, of me telling the thick jobsworth how wrong he was and him making a couple of calls and him struggling to read the long words on his phone, he dearrested me, gave me a cop lecture about knife crime and buggered off... No apology (tosser)

Nice video! I've always carried a penknife on me, such a useful tool to have. I feel naked when going through airports, etc. if I can't feel the weight in my pocket. I don't particularly use the blade much, but it does come in handy occasionally. Hell, at the rock night club I used to go to as a teenager I'd have the staff come find me for a bottle opener for the once in a blue moon when someone ordered wine and I was easier to find than the bottle opener!

Two things that tend to live in my trouser pocket, a stubby pencil and a short knife to sharpen it with. If push came to shove the pencil would do more damage, knife only has a small section of blade with a decent edge and a rounded point.

The one and ongoing thing that will forever dick me off, as someone who used to roughshoot and owned shotguns and has carried a folding pocket knife since I was about 11 years old and still do in my 70's is that it doesn't matter how many laws are passed, what gun laws and what knife laws and what offensive weapons laws, criminals will continue to ignore the laws because they are criminals. I can remember when murder was rare in the UK, now it's an almost daily occurence. Pass all the laws you want, criminals will just ignore them.

I use a 7" Filleting knife while fishing, it stays in the bag with my fishing gear and is only used to clean fish, i suspect it would be a lawful reason as I'm going to and from fishing! Would you agree?

You can have a fixed blade filleting knife whilst fishing. As long as it stays inside the fishing box or rod bag etc when not fishing. Its a knife for a purpose. The law on legal carry is more for if you've gone walking camping etc and you carry a small penknife that's OK. It's not however ideal to go for a drink and carry a penknife because there is absolutely no reason to be carrying one when pubbing and clubbing. If you carry one just say to yourself "will I need my penknife with me?" Use common sense.

You missed the point. Anyone of age can carry non-locking knives under 3” without needing a reason. You can carry the buck knife or pretty much anything else provided that you have a good reason for doing so. You can carry a machete or kukri if you're gardening etc but not if you're strutting about town at night.

The term "valid reason" is totally at the discretion of the police office and the courts. Your valid reason might not be valid to them. Also all knives can be offensive weapons and you might get charged for that. Don't take knives to the pub, club, football match. I keep my very nice Swiss Army knife on my keys.

Great advice , I remember back in the 1980's I had a knife in a jacket which I used for fishing. Being young and innocent, I just told the truth. I was pressured to admit 'if someone was going to kill me or my mother' I 'would' use/ brandish it. Which of course anyone would...child logic...hadn't learnt to lie. I was done for possession with intent to use or something. On reflection it was a bit unfair. However, it was the time of the SPG who beat me up twice for no reason. But they did clean the streets of the UK. So I have mixed feelings. Extreme results require extreme measures.

It really gets blurred with the claws etc, you can get away with some of them in a martial arts context as long as their are what's called "training weapons". I do Ninjutsu as well as historical re enactment/full contact battle (romans, Vikings, medieval ) so obviously part of the training is to have them, from what I understand as long as they don't cut and you are not using them in a threatening way publicly you are allowed to have re enactment weapons for that purpose. Through work etc ive met people who own sharpened ready to go commando knives, I'm guessing they get away with it because they aren't dicks with them.

The law doesn't state a blade length of up to 3 inches, it states a 'cutting edge not exceeding 3"' The blade itself can be a bit longer, so long as only 3" of it is sharp. Not sure the police would see it that way though, but the courts would.

As soon as you commit another offence, then you will be searched and charged with possession of a bladed article. Being under the influence of Alcohol is a higher culpability factor, being on a licensed premises can add to that. @englishshooting you need to be very careful how you give information regarding the carrying of a knife as your advice specifically applies where there is no offence or suspicion of an offence. If people think they can carry a bladed article as a matter of course whilst out and about in town and on the lash, they could easily find themselves on the wrong side of the law. I would avoid having any bladed article with you if you are in a pub or after having a few.

I've carried some sort of penknife since my Grandad gave me my first when I was 10. Find it difficult to imagine managing without one. I've never misused one - never been tempted to. My current knife is a tiny 2 inch long single-blade knife with a 1.5 inch blade (3.5 inches long when open.) It used to hang from my key-ring. Currently it sits on a shelf. The reason being a couple of policemen spotted it when I was starting up my mobility scooter one day and demanded to see it. I pointed out the size of the thing, and that the marks on the blade surely showed its main use was sharpening pencils (yes I still use pencils.) Plus - for god's sake - I'm almost 80 and my walking sticks aren't exactly fashion accessories! But - they pointed out - the blade locked and that made it a 'weapon.' They returned it and allowed me to leave only after a warning that if I was caught 'carrying' again I could be subject to arrest. I just feel so safe with such stout fellows around.

sounds like you should legalize and regulate all drugs, first off theres no reason why someone should be put in prision of fined for putting a chemical in thier body. Secendly it'd get rid of the revenue for these street gangs and the would dwimndle in number befor all but disappering. Thirdly regualted drug markets would insure pure unadulterated products at prices the coud pay for rehab for anyone who needed it with a small portion of the tax revenue. also the drugs could be made cheaper which would mean opeople wouldnt have to rob and steal to get a fix. Alcohol is far ore complex to make then drugs yet no one is burgerlizing home for booze money; becuase its affordable. And the people that choose to use will save yoou money in the long run as they will diminish thier life pan and cost less retiremnt payouts. seems like a win for everyone involved; well beside the self rightous do gooders that believe they have a right to dictate how other lead thier lives.

In Czechia, there are no knife laws. Weapons other than firearms are unregulated and consequently may be freely carried for the lawful, good reason that is personal protection. Pistols may be carried pursuant to a permit obtained through a shall-issue process. Also, there are no specific rules of engagement for personal protection. Carrying daggers to back up a pistol is commonplace.

No one goes out to stab people with a Swiss army pocket knife when you can buy 10 inch kitchen knives in any store. That restriction deters no one and saves no lives. It only leads to accidental injury due to the knife folding on your fingers.

If a cop says I’m going to give u a caution DO NOT ACCEPT THE CAUTION it is an admission of criminal guilt and will go on your record. Tell the cop to take you to court as they have to prove that you were carrying it unlawfully so have it at the bottoms of a rucksack with a coat on top as it would be impossible to prove you had it with the intent of committing a crime

Many years ago in the Territorial Army we were issued with a large pen knife as part of our uniform/kit. It was supposed to used as a general tool though I looped mine through my lanyard to keep it looking straight. I guess it being an issue knife when travelling too or from the TA centre would have been exempt.

Thing about uk laws tho. It's basically a guide on what's always gonna be safe to have not was only allowed. You can carry a 10 inch fix bladed knife legally you just need a valid reason to have it but their basically is no valid reason over you liking the knife. I have ever found anything a 3 inch blade can't do over a larger blade in everyday life. So their is no need for a larger blade.

Where I live in South Dakota It is legal to own and open or conceal carry any knife in South Dakota, as it has no laws controlling the ownership or carry of any type of knife. automatic knifes, switchblades, ballistic knifes are legal to own in many states here.

Switchblade is illegal to carry. Ka-bar legal with reasonable excuse eg. going camping. Speed assist is not a switchblade and technically legal with reasonable excuse. I carry a locking blade knife to and from work where I need it, and a slip-joint (Victorinox Fieldmaster) everywhere else.

It's completely bonkers in the UK. I live in Czech Republic and there are no restrictions on knives at all. The local petrol station were selling them at discount with petrol purchases, so I bought 2 lockblades and a butterfly knife, they were decent quality and a good price. I kept the butterfly in the car with some other bits and pieces, drove the car to Scotland on a visit. It was then that my friend told me the knife was illegal. It just makes no sense. When we were boys in the Scouts most of us had big Bowie knives on our belts.

I carry a buck 770 flashpoint regularly as I work in farming/forestry but I also consider it to be one of the safest knives I’ve had as it not only locks out so it won’t fold on my fingers in use but it also locks in so it can’t accidentally open in a pocket. Does it conform to UK laws? No but that said I have only ever carried a knife as a work tool and absolutely never for “self defence” and I live way out in the countryside so to be fair my chances of being stopped and searched are pretty low

I carry a Svord peasent generally. Friction folders fall under the same law. I have generally found though Swiss army knives tend to raise far fewer eyebrows as they're immediately recognised as a tool. Banned is however a funny term. It's legal to own for example a balisong if you already have it (pre ban), just not buy sell or lend one. It's a little ridiculous, as the huge majority of knife crime is committed with household kitchen knives or utility knives

The other guy had the knife my friend punched him and the guy died from banging his head on the kerb as he fell. I think it was 9 months he spent, at 17 y o, in an adult jail. Never been the same since. The jury were not the problem. Remand was.

Regarding the legal carry knives, you aren't allowed to take them into football matches or pubs and similar places. Also regarding the legal length of a non-locking blade, it could be a grey area because where a blade has to be 3 inches or less it states on the UK government website that the cutting edge of the blade has to be 3 inches or less so does that mean the blade could be for example 6 inches so long as the ''cutting" edge is 3 inches or less

As a Dutchman, the situation is similarly limited on my side of the canal, which frustrates me to no end. My father grew up carrying a pocket knife as an everyday item and his father never left the house without his trusty SAK (which, though cheap, I am glad to have inherited). Nobody would bat an eye back then. Hell, even when I was a kid growing up in the countryside some 20 years ago, it was quite normal for kids to carry a SAK (as well as hammers and all manner of potentially dangerous objects) when going outside to build forts. These days you simply can't do that anymore. I certainly won't let it stop me--hypothetically, of course--but having to be on your toes for carrying what's historically a simple tool akin to a watch is absurd. Honestly, if you're desperate to hurt people, a slender screwdriver is just as effective and more covert than most knives.

Assuming that your version is the same as mine, the CRKT Journeyer may very well land you in trouble with the police as it has a work around to the blade fixing issue. From the CRKT website, "To lock the Journeyer™ blade in place, simply pull the T6 torque wrench pin tool from the back of the handle and place it into the blade slot." A handy hole through the blade and body allows you to lock the blade open with the short end of the "allen key". If the blade is lockable then it isn't strictly an EDC knife.
