Did it surprise you to find out that these L's are silent? Do you use any other English words that have silent L's?

Thanks for this useful lesson. So, as I found out there is a simple rule: when the letter "L" is in the middle or end of a word between a vowel and a consonant it would be a silent L, eg. talk (C+V+ silent L+consonant)
@englishwithvrp43713 жыл бұрын
The sentences are brilliantly framed to practice the silent 'L' words. Appreciate it if you could add plurals for half and calf. I've heard many non-native English speakers pronouncing 'L' in the plural while following silent 'L' in the singular. I suppose the silent 'L' rule applies.
@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole3 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent suggestion. Yes, the L is still silent in the plurals. Thank you.

Good one. Primary stress is on "COM". The O in "COM" is a short O, like in the words' "mom" or "job". Secondary stress is on "ate", so it sounds like the number 8. The first A and second O are both weak, therefore pronounced as schwas (short, quiet uh sound).

Interestingly, I only don't say the L in calm, palm, and almond. It's more like cəm or cahm, pom, ahmond. I'm from New York City area.
@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! There's variation amongst Americans in this. Have you ever seen that Snickers commercial on TV on the pronunciation of "almond"?

Another silent 'L' word that I use frequently is the colonel (pronounced with 'R'). I'd like to know how Americans and also you pronounce these words 'qualm' and 'salve'.
@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, colonel is very strange, where the L is actually an R. I say qualm with the L and salve with a silent L, but dictionaries show both variations.
