Being an English teacher is something I am entitled with but when it is to talk about phrases, I really fail here badly. It's difficult for me to identify different types of phrases especially when I appear for some competitive exams. I tried searching for some explanatory videos several times but ended up with people like me. This is the best one I must say which helped me to get into it much deeper. Thank you so much Ashish❤️

In post modifier, participles phrase work not gerund phrase. Gerund ,in another words, is a noun. The word 'modifier' itself shows that Its work is to modify the noun if it is used as a pre modifier or post modifier. In post modifier, yes we have prepositional phrase, participle phrases- both present and past- infinitive and adjective Clause, but to say gerund phrase comes in post modifier seems not correct.
@EnglishWithAshish

Do I understand it right that when I use possessive adjective before noun (e.g. My book) it is an adjective not a pronoun? Pronoun is when I use e.g. Talk to her (and her stands for an object in the sentence and "You" which is not in the sentence present is a subject?). Thanks for any clarification.

That's true, Sourav! But the object complement tells us what the object is or has become. Here, the infinitive phrase doesn't tell us what the object has become. It just modifies it. In a way, it does complement the object, but not the way an object complement does. Hope the explanation helps!

thank you your lecture helped me a lot but plz I have a problem hmp. hope you may clear it for me. In the gerund phrases, the boy standing next to me and the girl talking to ron , both the words talking and standing are acting as a verb so how could you call it a gerund coz a gerund is one in which present participle acts as a noun
@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 4 жыл бұрын
They are not acting as verbs. They are modifying the nouns they are coming after. And they are present participle phrase; I incorrectly wrote them gerund phrases.

phrases don't contain sub and verb combination but here post modifier with relative clause seems to contain both combinations how does it possible, please explain?
@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 3 жыл бұрын
It's just a NOUN + MODIFIER Now, can a modifier be a clause? Yes, absolutely. It's not a complete sentence. The clause just works as an adjective, modifying the noun.
