SIR PLEASE PLEASE COULD YOU ANSWER THIS.. in the sentence houses are unbelievably expensive these days. "unbelievably expensive" is an adverb phrase or adjective phrase? we had a test and my teacher said it's adverb phrase.. i dont get it
@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 2 жыл бұрын
It's clearly an adjective phrase as it's modifying the noun 'houses'. It can't be an adverb phrase here.

If so, what’s the difference among adjective phrases, infinitive phrases, and participle phrases when all these phrases can function as adjectives to describe nouns or pronouns? Does this mean actually theses phrases are the same thing except for their names? Thanks!
@EnglishWithAshish
@EnglishWithAshish 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! All these phrases work as an adjective in a sentence. Though, an Infinitive phrase can work as a noun or an adverb as well. Here's the difference: an adjective phrase has an adjective in it, and participle phrases and infinitive phrases don't. But since they function as an adjective, modify a noun in a sentence, they are called as adjective phrases too. • He is extremely intelligent. (Extremely intelligent) - has an adjective in it (intelligent) • The guy sleeping on the floor is homeless. Sleeping on the floor - present participle phrase working as an adjective, modifying the noun GUY... it doesn't have any adjective in it, bit it's functioning as one • I need some people to handle my social media platforms. To handle my social media platforms - infinitive phrase working as an adjective, modifying the noun PEOPLE Hope this helps! 😊

@@EnglishWithAshish Thanks a lot for your reply! So, Can these phrases (prepositional phrases, infinitive phrases, participle phrases) also be called “adjective phrases” when they function as adjectives to modify nouns in a sentence? Are these names or concepts of phrases not fully independent but include each other under certain circumstances? Like prepositional phrase, which consists of adjective phrases and adverbial phrases in someone’s opinion. Can I also understand the relationship of adjective phrase and other phrases like this?

These names are given based on the presence of a certain word. Infinitive phrase: starts with an Infinitive Gerund phrase: starts with a gerund Participle phrase: starts with a participle Prepositional phrase: starts with a preposition Participle phrases strictly function as adjectives, infinitive phrases can function as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb too, and prepositional phrases start with a preposition and play multiple roles: an adjective phrase, an adverb phrase, sometimes a noun phrase too.
