@Nurdan. The apostrophe is referring to syllable stress in a word. An apostrophe at the top is primary stress, meaning the strongest, and the apostrophe below, is secondary stress, which is less strong. Hope this helps 🙏 ❤️ and 🕊

'Ebb' & 'egg' don't rhyme. That's because /i/ has a very high tongue position but /e/ is a bit lower. In order to make the Hard 'G' sound, you must raise the rear of your tongue to the roof of your mouth. This tends to alter the /e/ into an /i/ unless you work hard to avoid it. We don't like to work hard, so we let the /i/ sound happen. The result is that 'egg' gets pronounced as /eig/ rather than /eg/.
