Thanks to my parents moving several times when I was five, I never finished kindergarten. Since I had eight brothers and sisters and I was also the oldest boy, I had little supervision growing up. As the elementary school I attended had over fifteen hundred students, the class size was normally around sixty-five students. Due to the large class size, I had many friends. However, as a result of my not taking school seriously until my junior year in high school, my grammar skills have always been lacking. Out of desperation to make something of myself, I voluntarily entered the USAF in 1969. Thanks to my aptitudes in science and math, I became quite good at meteorology and ended up managing weather stations around the world. Now that I have a better understanding of how to use ‘because’, I will write with more confidence. Thank you.

I hated school for being a prey to bullies, nevertheless I concentrated on my studies instead of fighting the bullies. As time passed, and I did and they didn't, obviously that helped me a lot to build the character that I am today: an honest, dedicated, professional who chooses integrity over surrendering to be defeated by people or situations that against my ethics.

Your comment made me so sad and happy at the same time. I hate bullying and I am so sorry that you had to go through that, but I am so in awe of your strength and attitude. I don't know how many students were in my earliest school, but the first grade was split into two classes of 15-20 students each. Apparently, one of my fellow students is now governor of the state. My college experience with mono lasted longer than it should have -- the pharmacy covered the label of my medicine bottle, so I didn't know the prescription was supposed to be refrigerated! I took useless doses for weeks! Sympathies for your long recovery time.

Lucy you're such a great teacher! English is my first language, I'm American, but fine tuning it is great too! I also hate to repeat "but", maybe a lesson on "but" alternatives, there's "though" and "although", other more creative words or phrases would be great. When I was a teen, many, many years ago, kids got mono we called it for short or the "kissing disease", some kids took a long time to recover, glad you finally did, fatigue is horrible!

Extremely useful, thank you! I'm Czech and I remember our Czech language teacher at elementary school told us one day that it's not just wrong but plain stupid to say "thanks to an illness, thanks to an accident etc." because you're definitely not thankful for that. That was Czech language, mind you. Also, it was 30+ years ago but I still remember it for some reason :D I'd guess that even if English is a different language, it still makes no logical sense to use "thanks to" in a negative sense, even though people do use it all the time - Czech AND English. So I'll probably stay away from it because ever since that day a bell rings in my head telling me "there isn't much to be thankful about, is there?" ;)

Those were amazing, I actually noticed that I use "for" way too often. I also liked "Due to the fact that" and "as a result of".

Due to the fact that I noticed that some native English speakers use a lot the verb have when speaking, Could you please distinguish and elaborate when you should be using did /didn't and I have/ haven't when talking ?

Thank you, Lucy! I have another synonym for "because of" that I like a lot - "on account of". For example, teenagers compare themselves more to their peers on account of social media.

I was not really found of school as I had some learning difficulties, and only very few teachers understood my difficulties and took time to help me getting over them. For long, I used to think that I was slower than most of the kids, but thanks to those teachers, I just realized that I was as smart as anyone else. School teaches us only one way to learn, one way to think, and as a result of this, I think a lot of kids went or go through the same.

4:39 First year of my elementary school - 180. There ware 6 groups of 28-30 students each. There were 5-6 groups for every year, which there where 8 and thats amounts for at lest 1400 sudents at the elementary school. Huge school. I remeber I first saw the school building, it was very intimidating for me. I liked this school, my friends . I went for full 8 years there.

Unbelieveable! That's exactly the way i felt about school. Waking Up at 4:30am, getting the train at 5am...just for the sake of learning English. That's what i wanted. But unfortunately there were so many other subjects 🙄. 30years ago and now i'm trying to freshen IT up...with your the Power of 10 great Videos and Julie Caplin's ( Jules Wake) books. Tgank you so much for all your efforts

Thank you specially for teaching "Due to the fact that". I learned it very well. Due to the fact that you repeated it so much. I believe repeating a phrase via various examples and explanations can fix a phrase in the learners minds very better and this is I found in teaching that phrase. God bless you
