The "Do" word reminded me very much of a comedy sketch that used the phrase, "Can I do you now, Sir?" Clearly indicating innuendo as to what "do" here actually means.

Speaking of mistakes ;-), I was taught to use "not to" and NOT "to not". For example, at 0'36, when you say 'I will teach you how to NOT make these mistakes', I would have said '... how NOT to make these mistakes." Has English changed in 20 years, or has it become a colloquial way to speak (as with fewer vs less) ? And for how long?
@imcttunome
@imcttunome Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for including the example "less vs. fewer." It drives me crazy that our news journalists and others almost always get this wrong. For example: "Less people attended this year's party" I would prefer, "Fewer people attended this year's party." It is not that difficult to think things through before the words come out!

Thank you so much for this lesson Lucy ! I'm French and I've been teaching English in my home country for sixteen years. I'm very enthusiastic about your lessons ! I'm very fond of watching your videos and I endeavour to have a very good command of English ! I love British English so much (I've tried to use "much" as it was taught in your lesson today, ha ha !) and I can't help listening to your accent ! Your accent serves as a model and I try to sound like you ! I highly recommend your videos to my young students !!! Have a nice day ! Ludo 🙂

12:15 "We have fewer than 5 tickets left" is obviously also correct as well as the example "Fewer than 50 people came to the event". 🤔
@johngregory6005

correct. But for sums of money, one does not think of them as individual units. So 'less than $50' - an amount, not a number of countable dollars.

"she does the bed" is for parents or maids who fix/organize a bed. "He makes the bed" is for woodworkers who build or create the bed using wood and glue and nails. This is how I understand it. But I really need more lessons to improve. Plus, I might get influenced with your accent. A British accent is a bonus. 😊 Thanks for the lessons..
@johngregory6005
@johngregory6005 4 ай бұрын
I would say that a hotel maid does the bed, because she does the room, i.e. cleans it and makes it orderly. but when I get up, I make the bed (or not ....). My mother might say 'do your room, and that includes making the bed'. So - 'bed' is a bit of a tricky example! This is in fact a special use of the word 'do', to mean 'clean up', not the general use to mean 'perform an action'.
@Schjoenz
@Schjoenz 4 ай бұрын
@@johngregory6005 yes. That is also how I understand it. And the word 'make' is not always mean 'to create' or 'to build', right? It's a bit tricky as you have said.
@johngregory6005
@johngregory6005 4 ай бұрын
@@Schjoenz As Lucy says, 'make' has a range of meanings. Clearly saying 'to make the bed' when it means to straighten and tuck in the sheets, is not 'create' or 'build'. If I cause you harm, I could 'make it good' by compensating you for your loss. I can make a payment - online or in person. The word is very flexible in a lot of languages - which is useful for those who understand but tricky for people learning from the outside...
@Schjoenz

Great lesson! I'm just a bit confused about the explanation of have vs get. On the a/an part: In Hungarian, the equivalent of "a/an" is "egy", which basically means one, and for "the", we have "a/az", depending on whether the next word starts with a vowel or a consonant, the similarly to "a/an".

usage varies and it's hard to say there is a rule - but it's A hard question, not AN hard question. Usually if the H is breathed, it's A. But one hears both with Hotel. Probably more frequently A, but that may depend on the region.

With the quantifier "much" I think it needs to be stressed that it is not used in positive sentences as "many" would be "There were many shells on the beach". The following sentence would be wrong "There was much sand on the beach." Quite a lot of students don't realize that and assume that "much" is just the uncountable equivalent of "many".
@johngregory6005
