Hi, Max! Thank you for the lesson about contractions. Now I am reading a book that is full of contractions. It can be very unusual ones. This is an example of a contraction. "Jedge, I've asked this county for fifteen years to clean out that nest down yonder, they're dangerous to live around ‘sides devaluin' my property". I am talking about To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee. At first, it was difficult to read such a book but now I get accustomed to it. Great book. Tell us about your method of reading a book in a foreign language. If you please. Cheslav
@EnglishwithMax5 жыл бұрын
Hi! That's a great book! I think I read it as a teenager, but I would probably appreciate it more now. :) Yes, it would likely be quite challenging sometimes because of the dialogue. I'm sure you realised that it's supposed to reflect how people spoke in the South in the US at the time. Unfortunately I don't have a method for reading books in foreign languages... I admit I normally prefer to read articles in foreign languages than books. When I read foreign books, normally they're fairly modern. I also look up lots of words, particularly if they're repeated a lot. Sometimes I also underline words and look them up afterwards (if I own the book 😂). It's really up to you how many words you look up because although it's educational, it can make it less enjoyable. 😉

Hi, Max! Thank you for your answer. I am a book lover for many years. First, it was books in Russian now I read books in English. I have maybe a rather difficult goal. This is one of my goals concerning English. I would like to understand audiobooks in English not using the text of a book. It can be rather difficult books to read but I enjoy audiobooks. Ch.

Another fine video from Max. In my opinion, contractions are not so difficult. Without knowing basic English grammar rules they can be the nightmare for non-native speakers though. We have to know the full form. The problem is that there is one contraction for two or even three full forms. Today, no sooner had I finished watching this video then I encountered this sentence: "Bob, there's three large men in suits in the bar looking for you." This sentence is from the book 'Status Quo The Official 40th Anniversary Edition', page 18. It seems to me there is a mistake. It should be: "Bob, there're three ... " Am I right or no? And now at night, I found another sentence: "What I been told is that there's two VIPs murdered on the thirtieth floor." This sentence is from the book '1st to die' by James Patterson, page 17. It looks like the same problem (for me)as the first one. (pls correct)

Thank you! Very observant! Yes, it's becoming more and more common for native speakers to say "there is" instead of "there are" (or "there's"). It's technically incorrect, but it's very common, which is why you would see it in dialogue in books. I even say it sometimes when I'm not paying attention. 😉It bothers me when I see it in newspapers! Corrections: *a nightmare *had I finished watching this video than *Am I right or not?
@1953emo6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Max, thanks for your kindly reply. But I have another grammar problem. What is this construction: "I been told" ( in my opinion: subject + past participle + past participle). I know only: I have been told, I was told
@EnglishwithMax6 жыл бұрын
It's also incorrect ;). Some people speak that way, which is why it was in the dialogue (it might even be considered part of a dialect), but it's not something I would encourage you to copy!

Teacher Max, I'm Fong here, help? How do I say for that? For example, can I say " I help her with not thinking that she would help me back or she would repay me back or...etc"? How do we say for that?
@EnglishwithMax6 жыл бұрын
I would say: I help her without thinking that she would help me back. :) OR: I help her without expecting her to help me back.

Teacher Max,beside them, Can I say " I help him without expecting for his rewards"? Is it o.k?
@EnglishwithMax6 жыл бұрын
It's grammatically correct, but a native speaker wouldn't say that ;). You could say: I help him without expecting a reward in return.

HI max , Do you know what's the most complicated part of learning english for people native of idiom derivation of latin ? Like portuguese , for example ? It's the right sequence of adjective, For exemple . In Portuguese we say , existe uma mulher jovem, bela , inteligente , extrovertida e simpática que gosta de ensianr inglês pelo You Tube . What the right gramatical rule to put these adjectives ? Please ..

I'm confused of why she has and she is can be change to be the same contraction she's ??? As far as I know that "she has" means (active voice), and "she is" means (passive voice),.. please explain to me...
@EnglishwithMax4 жыл бұрын
It actually doesn't have anything to do with active or passive. Some examples of "she's": She's danced = She has danced She's a dancer = She is a dancer
@oimbakulmonye60024 жыл бұрын
@@EnglishwithMax thanks for your reply,. But Im sorry I have to ask you to explain again to this example: " she's accused" what does it mean ??? It means "she is accused" or "she has accused" ???
@EnglishwithMax4 жыл бұрын
@@oimbakulmonye6002 It could be either. It depends on the rest of the sentence. For example: - She's accused of theft. (She is accused) - She's accused him of theft. (She has accused)
