sooo nice teacher can you help me please with this Ex: Sami is.......cleaver but maher is ......stupid. 1/fairly -rather 2/rather-fairly 3/fairly -fairly 4/rather- rather
@engvidBenjamin3 жыл бұрын
Firstly note the spelling: clever. Second, clever is a positive adjective and stupid is obviously not. Therefore we would want to emphasise the positive adjective and downplay the negative. I would write something like: Sami is extremely clever but Maher is a little stupid. Stupid is not a great word to use.

@@engvidBenjamin Hey Benjamin, could you please make a video on caesurae. I am reading a book named 'The Ode Less Travelled' by Stephen Fry at the moment, and I find poetry pleasurable. But I, not being a native speaker, am struggling with where the natural pause ought to be. Take for example: 'Thus far, O friend! did I, not use to make' In the above line, I was unable to judge where the pause/caesura ought to be as there are two commas and a mark of exclamation too. On further reading the book by Fry I was told that the only caesura in the verse is the second comma. So, Benjamin please, and I am on my knees here, do make a video about this. I'd be thankful to you. Thank you

Hi,i’m going to take a quiz before watching the video. I would like to know how good i’m now. Let’s do this :D After quiz. Yeah. I got 9/9 100%. I’m jubilant. For me the most difficult word from those is “rather”. Perhaps, I’m not used to it enough. I don’t use it quite often. However i think that i’m able to use word “very” as well as its more sophisticated alternatives. Now after this lesson, I use “really” rather than “very”. Have a super sparkling day everyone. Take care and stay out of troubles. Bye! :)

But how can i know when word „quite” means totally and when a bit? For example: „Do you know Scarlet? No, i don’t. You know her for sure. She attended maths classes with us. She was quite pretty.
@engvidBenjamin4 жыл бұрын
Quite is particular to British English. British people are always trying to be modest and understated rather than exaggerated. Hence, if we think something is really good, we might only say it is quite good! Intonation (the sounds you put the emphasis on) can also change the meaning of a sentence.
@FUD11554 жыл бұрын
@@engvidBenjamin Now, i took a closer look. Funny fact. You should not say to british girl "You are quite pretty" for her it means "You are fairly pretty"
