*You use the word America to refer to the USA. America is a continent with 35 or 36 countries. In fact, the name America was placed for the first time over Brazilian territory by the German cartographer who baptized the continent after Amerigo Vespucci. I say the USA or the States or Stateside when I refer to the United States. In Spanish-speaking countries located on the American Continent, they call the USA Estados Unidos (United States) or Norte-America (North America). They call USA citizens Norteamericanos (North-Americans). The rest of the nations on the American Continent resent the fact that the USA has monopolized the name of the continent.*

Regarding Canadian English speaking population. Those that live in Eastern Canada, the Maritime Provinces speak as Gill does. In the rest of Canada, their spoken word differs greatly from the Eastern seaboard. We are often corrected and asked to repeat words when we travel outside of the region.

How much should we used Complex and compound sentences in Spoken English conversation. Where do we mainly use Complex and Compound Sentences in written or spoken english?
@engvidGill
@engvidGill 5 жыл бұрын
Hi - it's not really necessary to think of spoken English in terms of sentence structure, because it's more spontaneous - you think of something and you put it into words, then the person you're having a conversation with responds with their own thoughts. It's less formal than written English, and if you try to speak in long sentences you might sound too formal. It's more important to get the message across. I hope this helps :-)
@techyjohn3386
@techyjohn3386 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for quick reply. What I understand is that, while spoken conversation we can use more simple sentences to make it easier for other to understand but while written communication we can use more complex sentences, isn't it?
@engvidGill
@engvidGill 5 жыл бұрын
That's right -- but not just to make it easier for your listener -- it's just more natural to speak in shorter phrases, because speaking is (or should be) more spontaneous than writing :-) If you're giving a planned speech or lecture, that's different, but if you're having a conversation with someone it's usually more informal.
