Just wanted to give a quick shoutout to say I enjoyed your tutorial so much! Can't wait to put my new skills into practice. Your tutorial was seriously impressive! I learned so much and I'm feeling much more confident about this topic now. I stumbled across your tutorial by accident, but I'm so glad I did! It was super informative and I'm excited to try what I learned. I've been working on improving my skills in this area for a while, and your tutorial was just what I needed to take my knowledge to the next level. Thanks so much! Your tutorial was such a great resource! I'm really looking forward to sharing it with my friends and colleagues who are interested in this topic.

Gavin honestly speaking for me the most difficult part is to find people to photograph really. Where i live in Portugal the interest is very limmited and I dont have any opportunities to get better

I know that feeling. I love living in the quiet countryside but less people around means less models compared to city living. When you find a good one, hang on to them!

For me it's knowing when I should select a specific lens for portraits. Typically I pick lenses and look at the results, without knowing which lens I really need until after I've tried one or two out. This tends to mean I pick lenses just based on how much room I have to move back from the subject. If I'm taking a group portrait, I can't realistically move back far enough to use my 75mm, so I'll pick the 25mm so I can stay closer. And when I'm doing a shot of a single person, I tend to pick my 75mm 1.8 whenever possible just because I like the look of it, and to get the most bokeh. But it feels like I'm just guessing and going off intuition, instead of knowing the right answer for what lens to use. Does this make sense?

The biggest problem for me isn’t the technical part, but rather the creativity, or lack there of… That’s why I absolutely love these videos from someone who is that creative and never seem to run out of ideas. Great and very informative and entertaining video as always Gavin 👍👏

For me it’s coming up with a concept or developing a client’s concept, then location and background if they want a location but haven’t got one in mind. Then lighting accordingly and then posing.

My issue is confidence and working w/ models. I have no idea how to find professional models to work with, and even if I did, I expect that I'll be intimidated and not know how to direct them or ask for what I want (partially because I don't know what I want). As a sports photographer, I'm used to shooting the action. As an aspiring portrait photographer, I'm totally lost.

Unless you're working with. Supermodel most pro models are experienced with working alongside photographers at all levels. Be upfront about your experience and they'll help you by taking the pressure off my doing awesome posing and maybe even with outfits and make-up. Try an Instagram search for local models (or local photographers who tag models) and paying them a fair rate is usually the best way to kick off a conversation.

Well structured and presented video as usual, but given that you have placed some emphasis on the background I think a bit of a reality check is required. It's all very well using these backdrops but for most they will be well out of their price range. Perhaps something a bit more down to earth for the amateur photographer who will be able to relate more to the equipment your using and therefore feel more comfortable in being able to achieve these results themselves.

Hi James, thanks for the comment. The great thing about photography is it's a fantastic place to exercise a bit of creativity, such as painting your perfect background... like this kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2TFdn-Cn7OJb5osi=-yd0r42UE9lTmZBx

It's a tricky one for sure. Mood boards are my secret to success. Models get a good idea of what to do before the session and I can refer back to them when my directions run dry during the session 😉

Very timely for me. I've got my first really intense styled shoot coming up soon. I've been working on the mood board for it over the last few weeks and have just now gotten things kind of nailed down. Just like you went through, I had to get the right color and texture for the background, then think about the props, while all working around the wardrobe for a analogous palette. As you said, that is the part that takes the most time, so to keep from having to put that time on the model, I am working it all out beforehand....hoping that my vision will all gel at the time of the shoot. Thanks for the mental checklist!
