A timeless portrait can mean many things, there are no rules in photography, but the chances are it will have the perfect balance of styling, lighting, and post-processing. So in this video photographer Gavin Hoey covers all three.
It all starts (or fails) with the styling. Gavin keeps it simple with a pared-back color scheme of warm tones and only uses props that give the feeling of having a vintage age. The model's tweed suit and matching tie complete the look.
The goal of Gavin’s lighting is to keep detail in the shadows but not remove them completely. It all starts with a big, soft-fill flash that ensures there are no shadows on the model. Gavin then adds a couple of carefully positioned small side lights to create the look of a much larger light in his small home studio.
After running through three timeless portrait sessions, Gavin moves across to Photoshop Camera RAW (or the Develop module in Lightroom Classic) to apply some color toning to the shadows and highlights of the images which completes the timeless or analog portrait look.

Thanks for the comment. Ah yes, the early days of Adorama TV when we could have a 40 second intro video before the actual video even started ... Currently my videos are focused on the lighting first and foremost, then camera settings and where it's an important factor to the final look (like it was here) post processing.

This is why when I see the title "Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey", watching it is a no-brainer. It's your enthusiasm, Seth's no-nonsense, and Daniel's jokes and philosophical podcasts that are the reasons you three are the ONLY personal channels that I subscribe to. I'm hoping you might be able to answer something for me. When using the new XPro II trigger with different power flashes, which do you choose in the TCM menu if you want to use them all in manual mode? Is that even possible or do you have to flash each one and set them separately?
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 7 ай бұрын
Hmmm good question. You can TCM each group separately but in the menu the TCM needs what flash you use that setting is universal. Not a problem if all your flashes are the same Ws but a pain to keep changing if they're not. My advice... get a Sekonic flash meter 🤣

Great tutorial as usual Gavin. I'm doing portraits of a local Pantomime cast next week (Ohh no you're not...Ohhh yes I am ), and will use a very similar lighting setup. I'll be using a very budget setup, that most people can afford. NEEWER lighting stands/Modifiers and a couple of Yongnuo Flash Guns and triggers. (Maybe £250 in total).

Sounds like a great commission to do. This session was a three light set-up that replacted a large one light look. If you have the room go for one BIG side light and thank me later. BTW if anyone asks where the other light is, you can say "it's behind you" 😅

Hi Gavin, great work as always, you've taught me loads (and cost me loads in your recommended gear). This leads to my main question, as a UK resident with the lights I know I can easily source Godox or PixaPro strobes etc that are the Flashpoint equivalent from Adorama. I appreciate this is an Adorama TV channel but could you recommend a UK supplier for the Glow EZ and Westcott equivalent products over here, if there are any?
@GavinHoey

Pretty sure Westcott is distributed in the UK but you might need to contact them directly for info. For everything else... Come and find me at a UK event in 2024 😉

This was wonderful! I love how you teach. 😊 Thank you. I'll be watching this again. One question regarding the lights. You have Flashpoint 100, 300, and 200 lights. Could I make this work using my lights? I have two Flashpoint AD600 and one Flashpoint AD200.
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 7 ай бұрын
Hi Cathy. I totally could have used the a couple XPLO600 (AD200) instead of any of my lights here. Settings will change but then they always will 😉

I love the video, as I always do. They are some of the best on KZbin. I noticed you used three different types of lights; the Explor 300, the Explor 100, and an Evolv. How do you decide what lights to use? Also, I already have an Explor 600. I can’t afford to buy all the lights I need at once. What would your recommendation be for my next light, especially since I need to be budget conscious?
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 7 ай бұрын
Mostly it's a choice based on the light I'm trying to overcome and the size of the softbox. If I need more the 1/4 power I probably need a more powerful flash. But honestly... sometimes it's a case of what batteries are fully charged! For your budget conscious 2nd flash, take a look at the BLAZ heads kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWHPnKCLpZegock or (spoiler alert) stay tuned for my next video in two weeks 😉

Hi Gavin, as always a great teaching video. Over the years of watching you I've notice that only on occasion do you photograph "Older" people but they are always "In character" like the shot with Sam in the woods holding a spear (brilliant btw) and the man who was a boxer or the guy at the airfield. Is there any chance you could do a photo shoot in-studio with an "older", say, a lady model, but just for a normal portrait? Challange maybe?

Love the video! So you just killed the ambient and overpowered it with the studio lights, correct? That way it doesn’t mess with the white balance? I always thought you had to have all other lights in the room shut off

In the post processing, how did you come up with the value you used?
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 7 ай бұрын
Hi Joe. Post processing settings are fixed for the look (like the shadows and highlight colour shift) some are by experience (such as noise reduction) but most are to my taste on the day. Fun fact... I like nice round numbers so 10,20,50,75 of any setting is my comfort zone.

Hi Richard. They were the unwanted old roof truss and beams from a house that's being extended. A builder friend thought they would be useful for some DIY we needed to do but they seem to have found a permanent fixture in the studio!

Hi Gavin, fantastic video and really love the look. Quick question as I see you used the ad100 for the main light, I am just about to update my home studio lighting from a canon speedlight and a godox v1, on the fence weather to get 3 ad100's or two ad200's and a 100. which do you think is more versatile for a packable studio? many thanks.
@GavinHoey

That's a really easy one. Two EVOLV200 (AD200) and one XPLOR100 (AD100) every time. Check out my next live stream (tomorrow) to see why the AD200 is hard to beat kzbin.info4kI9GUOpv5Q?si=a7pwyb6-2MhKaV3i
