I was thinking this would be really hard to do at today's prices, and then I remembered that our family of 4 ( with teen boys at the time) lived off about $50 a week in 2017. That included household items and pet food. We were really broke that year, but changing the grocery budget and paying off debt as we could turned it around. Thanks Tawra and Jill for getting us through that year.

I LOVE my leftovers. Sometimes, I'll split a meal with someone else or have it later in the week. When salad greens start to wilt, I throw them in an omelet or a smoothie to avoid wasting it. Thanks for your tips. I appreciate them. Best wishes for you all.

You can also put your wilting greens in iced cold water and it will bring it back to life as long as it’s not too far gone. You just let it soak for about 10 minutes and make sure to add ice cubes to the bowl to keep extra cold.

Ive been looking at clearance shelves lately. Today I was at Safeway and saw that a case of 12 mason jars was down 50% just because 1 jar was missing 😊 thats it! Pork shoulder was at $0.88c/lb but it was completely sold out...didnt get there in time.

Safeway is famous for not having the meats in stock for their sales; 9 times out of 10 I go there first day of their sales, early in the day, and it's gone, or they didn't order it.

Use their digital coupons. And don’t forget the 5 or 10 off total groceries. This week I got mango’s .05 cents. Butter 1.99. Ice cream 1/2 gallon 1.97. I had one time wine. Good wine at that! I bought 12 bottles at 7.99 on sale. They had a 50$ rebate via PayPal. But I bought 12 bottle so I got the 10% off about 100$ worth of wine. So 90$. Then the 50 off. So I paid 40$ for 12 bottles. Take advantage of the sales!

Such good advice! Our family has 8 people. Yesterday I got pork shoulder for $.87/lb. I brought home a 15.5 lb package and pressure canned it immediately. Half gallons of milk were on sale for $.99, so I bought the max. I also make yogurt in my instant pot. To maximize my $$ 's I go to costco with my mom or sister as they have membership and i don't. When i go, i buy 2-3 of their hot and ready chickens , take them home, and remove all the meat off the carcasses. I put the meat in meal size portions and then into the freezer. Of course, we have chicken for dinner that night, but i have enough for dinners, sandwiches, quesadillas, etc. for the next month. The bones go i to the crockpot for broth with any meat left on it for soup, chicken gravy, pot pie. Chicken and dumplings etc. I freeze the extra broth for those dishes for the month .this saves us a lot of money 😊 easy frugal meals

@EFN86 Жыл бұрын
My favorite is whole chicken! Easily makes multiple meals. We eat chicken with sides for the first meal. Pick the left over meat off the bones and boil the bones for stock. Leftover meals can be chicken noodle or chicken rice soup (with the homemade broth), or a chicken casserole. You don't have to do this right away you can freeze the cooked chicken and the bones for later. I also save veggie peels(carrots and onions), and celery ends in the freezer to boil with the bones to flavor the broth. Ham bones can be saved to flavor baked beans, or soup. We also save a ton from hunting and butchering our own meat. Start up costs can be a bit, but even if you drop them off at a meat locker to have processed you can still save a ton. Also getting to know your local farmers. When egg prices were up to $5-$6 a dozen I was buying off a local farmer for $3-$3.50 a dozen. They even gave me a discount for bringing my own egg cartoons.

Talk about leftovers...one Thanksgiving, a friend of mine had the meal at her house with several of her family members. The next day, she could not find the leftover turkey. I have taken the tips and applied them to my little family of one, me. I figured out that food isn't the focus of my life, so I do eat less. I went from a regular Correlle plate to a spaghetti dish, and then don't fill it up. I also have two salad plates and use them all the time. I disagree with you about a freezer for a senior. I have 2 - a smallish chest freezer, and a smallish upright. The chest freezer is for meats, and the upright is for bags of veggies, and bread, and ice cream, and the meals that I made full size portions of, and yet froze at least half (enchilada casserole, soups, stews, etc), so I wouldn't have to cook at another time, just reheat on a busy evening. Stop calling them "leftovers", call them "future meals".

I love to make sourdough bread. I’ve had my starter for about 6 months. When it’s time to feed the starter, I make bread. That way I’m not wasting the discard. It’s actually really easy. I keep my starter in the fridge and feed it every week or two. I use my kitchen aid to mix and knead . It takes about 6 to 8 hours to complete the bread from start to finish. A good chunk of that time is waiting for the dough to rise and proof. It tastes so much better than store bought sourdough bread. LOL it just ruined me for the store bought. I make 2 loaves every other week. When it’s gone, it’s gone. I just do without bread till I can make another batch.

2 of my friends used to live in the same building I live in now and they were the same type of people that made a ton of food for each meal and then never ate any of The Leftovers. As an example they both like different kinds of pizza so they would make two pizzas and only maybe at the most eight half of each pizza. So when they were living in this building I actually accepted their leftovers and most of the time I had meals for lunch everyday just from their leftovers. Sometimes I even ended up with a few days worth of food. And it's all thanks to their leftovers that they would not eat and until I was getting them they used to be thrown out. And these people are out of very low income so the really shouldn't have been doing that.

From now on I'll check the sodium in the chips if he has a craving for them.
