DCS Multiplayer Su-27 Stealthy Growling Sidewinder Server Tutorial - Fly the Su-27 Stealthy

This is my first DCS Guide and the focus is how to fly a Su-27 in a stealthy way which is specific to the Growling Sidewinder Server. I am not a DCS expert by any means but truly enjoy flying the Su-27 in this stealthy way so I wanted to share so others could try it out.
My Discord Community Can be Found Here: / discord
I filmed all of this before the new DCS clouds update so this is in DCS 2.6 and not DCS 2.7. All footage is from the DCS Growling Sidewinder server. I wanted to make this video really focus on how you can fly the Su-27 in a different way so you can feel inspired to fly things in a different way. This is very different from other videos I typically see (ie DCS Grim Reapers) where it's basically just showing you click X to do Y. The focus here is to introduce a theory and to shown how it can happen. I am not an expert in DCS but I find this playstyle fun and I wanted to share it. If you want to watch a more cinematic version of this video you my want to check out Drewksi (OperatorDrewksi) video. He had a really interesting take on this but his video is more pure entertainment/cinematic more so than an actual DCS multiplayer tutorial.
For DCS videos, I really enjoy:

TheGiggles (Twitch and KZbin)
Jabbers (KZbin)
Longshot (KZbin)
JorgeHFJ (YouTUbe)

I am aware I made some typos between Fox-1 and Fox-2 missiles. Sorry. ET missiles are FOX-2 missiles. R-27ER are Fox-1. Out of a bad habit I always think IR missiles are fox-1 which is incorrect. You will see in other videos, I make the same mistake when I panic. Old habits, die hard!

When in any of the scan modes you can just hold down the lock button instead of spamming it. It will lock as soon as an enemy is detected. I think you could have also done a really brief intro on the Russian RWR for players who don't know the symbology (left icon is aircraft, right most icon is AWACS, everything inbetween is ground/ocean radars)

Thx. I tried not to retrace too many steps from other KZbin videos. If I wanted to milk youtube, I could add one new thing in a video and then stuff the rest of the video with things that other people have done and then milk the content. I do not like when people do that because it's not respectful of people's time so I try to just make sure everything I add in a video is not generally covered in other videos. Thx you for your comment.

To date everything I have been making has been IL-2 related. I purposely built a new machine to start doing DCS videos but the plan is still to focus mostly on IL-2. Later next week, we will have an IL-2 guide. I hope you guys found this helpful, if anyone needs helps or has questions please feel free to let me know. I posted this on the weekend as my general weekday content is for IL-2.

While this tactic is still great for beginner Flanker pilots, flying at altitude and learning how to BVR will serve you better in the long run. That way you can use a mix of both tactics adapting to the situation. Although you are still typically fighting more advanced fighters, the ER/ET missile and radar updates (radar track used to break too easily from a notch, it no longer does) from a few months ago have made the Flanker much more deadly in BVR than a lot of people seem to realize, as long as the pilot knows what they’re doing of course. It's still going to be hard taking on multiple opponents by yourself because of the lack of multi-tracking, but catch someone in a 1v1 BVR engagement and you can give them a very hard time with this plane now.

You aren't wrong. I will say that I made this guide specifically for GS. It's pretty rare you get up into a straight 1vs1 without another person coming in so I tailored this for the usual BS going on in Growling so people could try an alternative play style. Thank you for making a thoughtful comment to help others.

This video was originally 30+ minutes and I decided to take out a lot and keep this at a reasonable length. When I started the KZbin channel I told myself I would respect everyone's time. So I don't want to retrace steps that other people have done. Some things that I ended up leaving out was key mapper settings and the mechanics around shooting missiles. It works exactly the same with the Su-33. Just note that the 2 extra pylons that the Su-33 you can have can only have the semi-useless Fox 2 missiles if I remember correctly. The Su-33 has less thrust/weight ratio than the Su-27 so IMO the Su-27 is better for this but by not much vs the Su-33. Let me know how it goes!!

So I play War Thunder and you can meme me all you want but I’m sure this can work on DCS as well: One thing you can do if you fire an IR missile at a friendly and realize it quickly enough is to turn your radar on and lock the friendly so you trigger their RWR and they may just have the reaction time to check 6, see the incoming missile, and flare it off. That said, there’s a huge caveat here because in WT, you cannot choose to use either flares or chaff-you use both with every button press so your friendly may just use chaff since it’s a radar lock warning he’s getting and still take the heater up the tailpipe. .. also flares work much more often in WT than in DCS so your results will definitely vary. In that scenario though, what do you have to lose? I don’t know much about how modern RWR detects missile launches and you’d have the same issue with chaff/flares being selectively used but if you actually fire a radar missile at the friendly (after your IR missile was fired at them) that could light the fire under their ass quickly enough to panic then into dropping chaff and flares. Is that attempt to save a buddy worth another missile? Who knows. Of course, a quick voice message or message to the chat might work better but again, I don’t play DCS yet.

Could you pull off the same type of kills in a MIG-21, or 19? I'm new to DCS, but I find the idea of using really outdated tech to kill modern fighters in multiplayer pretty amusing.
@Enigma89
@Enigma89 3 жыл бұрын
Can you? Yes but it is harder. I am planning on doing a mig21 version of this at some point. The mig21 doesnt have data link so you are very reliant on picking up contrails or a GCI. Feel free to subscribe if you want to see future videos following a similar format. I find it rewarding killing modern day jets with older planes. The aim120c trade to me is very boring

@@-Zevin- Oh thanks man, it's not easy to tell who is subbed so unless I recognize the name from ppl who always comment then I am not sure. Playing DCS is a real investment. I go hot and cold on the game. On one hand it's the only game in it's niche trying to do what it does for modern day stuff, on the other hand the multiplayer scene pales in comparison to IL-2 IMO. I found most of the fun in DCS was actually sitting down, reading and learning about all of the systems. You get to really understand the capabilities of countries and why they designed planes/systems in a certain way. For that reason I like it but it's not a game I can play over and over again like I can with IL-2. The MP scene is just too under-developed (or neglected). I do like the RSR server for dynamic campaign stuff and Growling Sidewinder for straight up fighting.

@@-Zevin- If I can offer one more piece of advice if you are new to DCS. Stick to 1-2 planes max at the start and just learn them. If you drop $500 and buy up a ton of planes you are going to forget everything between all of the planes. You have to find a plane you think you will like and learn it. The F-14, JF-17 + FC3 are my favorite modules. The F/A-18 is probably the best noob friendly plane to start with because it can do literally everything but that plane just rubs me the wrong way and it's not 100% done IIRC.
@-Zevin-
@-Zevin- 3 жыл бұрын
@@Enigma89 Thanks allot for all of the tips and advice I really do appreciate it. I think I will give DCS a go. Although IL-2 and WW2 combat in general will probably always be my main focus, there is something more pure about that type of combat, being one with the machine and flying with instinct and experience, nothing else like it imo. (Those new clouds in DCS though, I really hope IL-2 gets a update like that, it looks fantastic) When It comes to all the modules on DCS, maybe I'm an idiot or just a masochist but I'm really tempted to dive right into the MiG-21, I know it's not "easy" or competitive with modern aircraft, but I always loved that plane, and If I could get some troll kills with it in multiplayer all the better. I did buy "flaming cliffs 3 module for DCS a while back, which is a good value, but a bit overwhelming, even with the more "simplistic" models. I can see the appeal of learning the systems in DCS, I'm the type of gamer already that will spend 2-3 hours in IL-2 then go and spend another 4 reading wiki pages and books about the history and aircraft anyway.

@Enigma89
@Enigma89 3 жыл бұрын
It's a combination of things. 1) The meta in the server and in a lot of DCS servers is to just dump AIM-120C or Phoenixes at altitude. 2) Due to #1 people get complacent and are used to relying on radars only and don't look outside their cockpit and just stare at the radar screen. 3) The Datalink on the Su-27 is very powerful where you can have your radar off but still get fed information from your awacs and friendly planes. I am not great at the Fox-3 fights because I do not find it particularly rewarding so I am flying against the grain. There are some people who may be great at fox-3 fighting and may have a different perspective. TheGiggles and Tempest in particular are very good DCS pilots so I would recommend their twitch streams.

@@eagiedynamics1779 The ET are special because they do not give the enemy a warning when you shoot. The IRST is looking for heat signature, so yes sometimes you cannot pick up targets in head ons. The issue is that you do not really want to shoot at people head on because if they see you then they will shoot at you before you can shoot at them, so at that point you may as well shoot a non ET missile. The IRST is really good at getting clean kills when people do not know you are there. So that is always from the side or behind. They are one of the best missiles in the game in my opinion. You can fire a fox-1 at someone, get them to turn away, and then you can follow up with an ET missile. For me using the 27ET is like cheating. Or at least glitching, because it's so much harder to look out the window in the game compared to real life. I can't even differentiate between con trails and smoke, not to mention that my opentrack doesn't allow too much of a good sight.

@@Enigma89 No, I'm using a webcam for it. It works okay, but it sure isn't easy to look around and zoom all the time. I imagine it's much easier to spot smoke in real life than it is here...

yea his server's great but is it really worth it and shouldn't we be able to straight up copy the cold war servers exactly only with out the Megalomaniac running it? maybe a lot less public shaming kids in discord that he personally writes himself, where he essentially belittles and bullies them from this weird perspective of someone who with out a doubt believes they are morally superior. then at the end he sentience them. you will be publicly shamed on this huge discord and banned for weeks or you could write this super long essay where you have the chance to degrade yourself. it's always some humiliating essay that would take longer to write then your actually banned. Like the level this man takes to really degrade and dehumanize is actually pretty impressive if it wasn't actually a thing he does to kids mind you and me actually in my case how ever none of it was true. i can't speak to the accuracy of these public shaming but i wouldn't take it with a grain of salt. (Also in regards to this specific video i thought this was called the Drewski Tact..) lol i need to check when whos came out first but i wanna say this stealth tact is bitting of dreskie. i could be wrong tho. honestly idgaf..) back to public service announcement. (IM WILLING TO GO ON ANY CONTENT CREATORS PLATFORM AND HAVE A CONVO ABOUT HIS GUY EMIGMA AND HOW SICK AND TOXIC HE RUNS HIS DISCORD. IVE ACTUALLY DECIDED RECENTLY THAT IM FULL IN WITH EXPOSING THIS ASSHOLE AND HIS FRIENDS. IM A GROWN MAN AND NOT GOING TO LIE SEEING YOUR NAME WHERE EVERYONE IN THIS HUGE DISCORD CAN SEE NEXT TO STRAIGHT LIES ALL IN EFFORT TO HUMILIATE YOU FOR ALMOST NOTHING POWER TRIP REALLY. I MEAN THESE KIDS AREN'T RAPIST OR FUCKING PEDIOS THEY HAD BAD COMmS ETIQUETTE. OR CALLED SOMEONE A f WORD OR SOMETHING KIDS WOULD DO IN A GAME. NO ONE SHOULD BE PUBLICLY SHAMED ESPECIALLY KIDS THEY SEEMS LIKE MINORS ALOT OF THEM. I know he's probably making ED a gang of money but i feel like the modules are fire modules and people want to fly them and that's why it's making money. Egnigma is just the only server you can curently fly in. it just seems like he is but that's only because he's literally the only server. Im telling you have to pull the band aide eventually i mean dude's a monster the longer you wait the worst and more public it will be. I swear. Like i been in some power tripping mods in some servers but enigma is next level. this will probably get deleted but maybe not. he seems to be completely convinced he's in the right for doing this shit lol @Grim Reapers @operationdruskie

For context, we have 9,772 members on our discord, 30 of which are banned. That means that the ban rate is 0.30%. Out of the 10,000+ players on the server there have only been 15 public bannings that included a requirement to write a paper, one of which is yours; that is 0.15%. I understand that DCS modules are really expensive and it is a very costly punishment for a player to get banned out from a server or two because that is essentially a ban across the entire game. For this reason, we give people a way to rehabilitate themselves so they do not eat a costly ban that will not let them to fly their modules. You were banned on January 7th for flaming in SRS, calling players chimps and other slurs. There were two witnesses and your ban was a 10-day ban. Your punishment was to write a 4 page paper on why men overcompensate when their masculinity is threatened. You then went onto the Discord server and went on a rant about it. We decided to ban you. You live with the consequences of your actions. Write the paper or you will continued to be banned. The vast majority of players are not getting bans on the server, less than 1% ever get a serious ban and you are one of the toxic few. Please really take this moment and compare what has happened to you vs the 99.80%+ of the other players. You have a way to get unbanned.

@@Enigma89 I'm not saying that you are a noob. Yes, GS is just a big death match server but it doesn't mean you have to use valley sneaking. There is no need for tutorials on this tactic as it doesn't require much skill, all you need to know is the basics of how modern jets work with their radars (and the sukhois vertical IR scan). Another reason why it's not needed is because, as you said your self, it's only applicable to GS, yes you may kill a dumass f18 fully loaded with 120s and not looking down, but those are not smart players, noobs won't learn much from killing them, even players with below average skill know about snakes in the valley and avoid them unless they wanna do the same, they will do it better then the average noob that will go on GS and start doing it after watching your video (judging purely by the comments under this video) and get killed (also it's not only you, every single famous youtuber doesn't play this game properly and just memes around in valleys or stupid duels). You learn from people who are better then you, not worse and those players use propper bvr tactics. Valley sneaking is the equivalent of trying to kick people while blind folded, yes you will kick a random toddler from time to time but most of the time you will get your ass handed to you by adults. Noobs will learn this, become a one trick pony and use this tactic everywhere, even on ww2 servers, you know it, i know it, everybody knows it. This tactic is like a real life use of the cobra switch, it has very little use. You might say that sukhoi is underpowered and it's main strength is IR with ET missiles but your real advantage is a wingman which you had (i know, for the purpose of the video you did valleys but you know what i'm trying to say). I get it, this tactic is trendy because of ralfi, drewsky and grim reapers so you wanted to cash in some views but it would be better if you did proper BVR tutorials, for example how to defeat an incoming 120 while keeping an ER lock or you could make a tutorial on MAR and NEZ for different missiles, there are plenty of things that you can do, and if you work on the videos properly you might make better tutorials than that GR balbbering nonse who doesn't even know what he is talking about.

@@dr.polansky4192 For me, I personally find a lot of enjoyment killing the advanced jets when they are asleep. Am I clubbing baby seals? Maybe but it feels good and I enjoy the play time while doing it. Would I fly like this in real life? No. I find it fun and wanted to share to people to try something different out. I do realize Drewksi came out a similar video not too long ago which is a good thing and a bad thing. Good because yes there are extra views but bad because it looks like I am purposely following a YT trend. I have always flown the Flanker this way and the Flanker is my favorite plane in DCS. Anyways, thanks for your thoughts. I am going to shy away from the suggestions you made, not because I disagree with you. Some of the things you suggested are better explained by other people. I detest the Grim Reapers and do not want to release half brained content like them so I will leave some of those subjects for people who can explain it better. I am a WWII-era video gamer first and DCS second so I will self-regulate myself when I don't think I can give the subject a good explanation. With that said, I will release a few more videos on this, with a full sortie doing this and I may do a Mig-21 version at some point. Thank you again for your comment and hopefully you find my response thoughtful. Edit: If I can find a subject I think is important to know and not covered already by someone then I will make a video on it but to date I haven't seen anything that is desperately needed. Happy to hear any ideas outside of the ones you have already given. I think Jabbers has some good content that covers some of what you mentioned IIRC.
