I believe the reason jaden cared about Jessie was because unlike jadens other friend that put him on a pedestal and depended on him. Jessie was a true equal to jaden and felt like a true friend that jaden never had due to yubel pushing everyone away from jaden when he was young. The ending of s3 was jaden taking responsibility for abandoning yubel and accepting yubel. Season 4 jadens characters is so different because of the heavy responsibility he feels to protect other's and take duel 100% seriously which is also why he pushes everyone away. This causes everyone to have to develop without jaden being their support. The ending of s4 was jaden learning to balance responsibility with fun and joy. He became a well rounded adult thanks to the person that 1st set him on his journey. Ofcourse jaden still cares for his friends but growing up means everyone goes their separate ways as they discover themselves.

I disagree about GX ending being about Judai choosing the spirit over his friends and not having an arc season 4. While it worked as conclusion for many of the characters arcs, Season 4 was also about Judai's friends dealing with his new personality, seeing their friend who enjoyed duels become this stoic duelist who barely smiles. Judai arc in season 4 is about him regain his joy and love for duels,not by going back to the character he was before Yubel's incident, but rather by balancing it with his new sense of responsability. This is perfectly represented by final scene, with Judai in the desert seeing the drawn left by his friends, in some ways telling him that, not matter where he goes, their bond and the memories they shared will always be part of him.

It is the process of maturity in my opinion. In the 1st season, Yudai is just a boy doing things for fun without thinking deeply about the consequences at all. Just like us when we are naive and have lots of dreams in our school year. On the other hand, Yudai in the 4th season is the one who has gone through the ordeal of life, especially suffering the consequence of his own mistake. He becomes seasoned and has a much more realistic view of the world. It is the same as us after we go out into the world, receive setbacks in our job, even get sacked, make some bad financial decisions and lose money, or make some bad decisions with marriage. We all will change but like Jaden, we also need some way to find the boy in us back to achieve inner peace and happiness

The ending never really felt like him abandoning his friends for spirits to me. The main theme of GX S4 is about the cast all growing up and going on their own paths. Since they all graduated they just pursued those paths, also the drawing at the end shows that even though they’re going on their own paths they all still love each other. Plus Judai says in the episode preview for the last episode that he wants his excitement to reach Sho and Kenzan, showing that even while having the time of his life he still wishes he could share the moment with the people he’s closest to.

In my own personal life I can relate to Judai, for much of my 20s I only cared about having fun and didn’t care about what the future held in store. That ended up costing me eventually and I lost a sense of purpose both to myself and those around me. I sabotaged friendships in order to fulfill my own ego. At one point I even felt incredibly nihilistic about life and didn’t feel like doing anything to move myself forward. In fact I wanted to see everything burn just like the Supreme King. But I’m slowly starting to regain my passion for life again as well as balancing responsibilities just as Judai did in the end. I never realized just how deep the character development for GX really was, it feels like it came from the writer’s real life experience of growing up into an adult.

Gotta admit this kinda caught me off guard, when I saw that the video was getting close to the end while you were still talking about Judai vs Bronn I expected a break down of the Dark World arc up to that point leading into everything involving Haou and beyond for it's own video at a later date as it rightfully deserves. I was absolutely NOT expecting literally the BEST story in Yu-Gi-Oh's more than 25 year history to get hyper-abridged and covered rapid-fire in about 3 minutes including the entire half-season following it dealing with the strongest character development that Judai underwent in GX's entire run as well as the culmination of multiple other character's arcs. Honestly I feel that from the introduction of Haou to the end of season 4 there is enough to talk about that it could easily eclipse the entire 2 and a 2/3 seasons that came before it.

This arc traumatized me. I saw the dub and, I kid you not, they DID NOT AIR THE FINAL EPISODE OF THE SEASON. The last lines are "He's up there, in the stars". I thought this show ended with the main character dying. I was not happy at all and frankly, that's a cruel thing to do to a kid, to make them believe they are watching a a happy go lucky goofy show in season 1 only for it to end in death and darkness in season 3. Like you need to take some responsibility here, you can't make that huge of a tonal shift! I learned many years later on the internet that Jaden did live because there was one more episode in the original Japanese version of the season but I and millions of other kids watching had no idea that was the case. For us, the show did end with the death of Jaden and it was a supremely depressing and horrifying ending. They message of the story was, you will start out as a happy kid but will eventually fall to darkness and in the end you will have to sacrifice yourself to save everyone who only died because of you valued another friend over their lives. It was not a good message to give to the kids.

20:56 - I'm happy to see someone else who understands that the Supreme King isn't some "Yami Jaden" type figure, but just Judai losing his mind and developing a 2nd personality.
@dancostello4872
@dancostello4872 5 ай бұрын
Judai didn't suddenly 'develop' the Supreme King personality though; he always had [the 'Gentle Darkness', which was the essence of the Supreme King] dormant within him because it was one of his past lives/incarnations (kinda like how Yugi was stated to be the modern incarnation of Atem). We actually see evidence of this in literally every season (and BBT), though in some cases it obviously had to be left deliberately vague/open-ended to be expanded on later: >S1: Amnael & Kagemaru recognise that Judai has dormant powers yet to be fully awakened, which would be able to 'control the spirits' including the Sacred Beasts; this is also why Kagemaru chooses Judai specifically to be his opponent (he hoped to harness Judai's powers so he could control the Sacred Beasts). >S2: it's established that Judai was the 'chosen duelist' - the only one who could defeat the Light of Destruction - because he wielded a special power (later revealed & confirmed in S3 to be the Gentle Darkness, the power of the Supreme King) needed to restore & maintain balance in the universe. >S3: in the Dark World (another world of 'spirits') when Zure senses Judai's anger, he notes that he's only experienced that energy once previously (in the Supreme King's presence); he briefly entertains the idea of the two being similar but dismisses it due to Judai not being from/a part of the Dark World. Later in the season it's outright confirmed in the final duel by Yubel herself that Judai wields the Gentle Darkness (the power to control the spirits), & that he and the Supreme King are one and the same; Judai's subsequent flashback confirms that the Gentle Darkness is the power wielded by the Supreme King, & that he is Judai's past life/dormant spirit inside him, reiterating again that they are one and the same. >S4: Darkness reiterates & expands on the above, explaining that he kept targeting Judai via Trueman (his emissary) because he possesses both the [Supreme King's Gentle Darkness] & [Yubel, the original Guardian Spirit, since corrupted/augmented by the Light of Destruction] within him, giving him both of the mystical cosmic universe-y powers (for lack of a collective umbrella term) & making him too powerful/too much of a threat. >BBT: while destroying Venice, Paradox refers to Judai as the duelist with 'the ability to control the spirits' (referencing the Gentle Darkness). All of this is to say that factually speaking the Supreme King was _always_ a part of Judai's soul, but it wasn't until Judai's mental state deteriorated that that part was able to surface & convince Judai of the need to pursue power, fully taking control in the process. TL;DR - the Supreme King wasn't some DID personality suddenly 'developed' by Judai, he _was_ the other side/part of Judai that was always there, almost like a dormant alter ego, but didn't have an opportunity to surface until Judai became mentally unstable.
@ravenfal1496
@ravenfal1496 5 ай бұрын
@@dancostello4872 If that were really the case, we'd see more of him after Judai becomes the Supreme King again at the end of S3, but we never do. In S4, the only other voice in his head is Yubel, he accepts that HE is the Supreme King, that it was HIM who did all those horrible deeds, not some "other him" like what Yugi and Yami Yugi or Bakura and Yami Bakura had. In addition, the Supreme King never claims to be anyone other than Judai. In DM, it is made very clear that Yami Yugi/Bakura are aware that they are separate people from their hosts, but the Supreme King never makes such a distinction outside of his own mindscape, even going so far as to say "I've grown up" top O'Brien (in the sub at least. The dub actually DOES have the Supreme King speak about Jaden to other people, implying that he is a separate entity from Jaden). Yes, the power of the Gentle Darkness was always within Judai, and yes, it was only fully awakened after the trauma he experienced during S3, but the personality is not a separate ego from Judai's own; it's the part of him that began remembering his past life as the previous Supreme King and became aware of the power within him. The Judai we see inside his mindscape during these episodes is clearly unaware of what's happening while the Supreme King is controlling him, much as a separate personality is not always aware of what the other is doing while the other is in control (especially in fiction). O'Brien (& Jim) using the Eye of Orichalcum isn't him killing the Supreme King's spirit, it's him merging the disparate parts of Judai's psyche back together, restoring Judai to a single personality that has all the memories of his time as the Supreme King (which is what happens when people with DID are cured; the other personality doesn't go away, the two become one whole with the memories of both).

The ending of Gx is about Judai growing up. The start of GX showed Judai as an extreme in one way, a kid, and season 3 showed Judai’s extreme in another direction, as a someone with only responsibility. The final season showed that Judai had become an adult, capable of balancing the two extremes. Additionally, Judai didn’t abandon his friends for the spirits or anything like that. It showed the gradual growth of all the characters. Judai’s extreme childishness was what made him Judai, so the extreme jump to the new Judai distanced himself from his friends who were used to the old Judai. The ending of the season was there to show his friends’ acceptance of the new Judai that emerged from the fourth season, the one who can balance fun and responsibility. The final due was about Judai accepting himself. He dueled Yugi because the final point of Yugi was the same as well. While Gx came out before DSOD, I think they parallel each other well, with DSOD showing the parting of Yugi and his friends, and Yugi growing up (looking more like Yami and such). The final ending was judai’s ideal self, and anything that happens after GX is to explore that self which we won’t see, because YGO is a Shounen series, and that means it needs to focus on teens or characters that act like teens. I like to believe that Judai just went back to dueling, to discover dueling as his new ideal self, this I think is hinted at in BBT with Judai being in Europe for some reason yet also seemingly back in his time. As we grow up, it’s natural we separate but that doesn’t break the bonds. Each of the characters are characters, not just Judai’s friends. Eventually, I’d like to believe in the payoffs of the series. Everyone achieves their goals and such. And Judai ends up returning to DA, married Alexis and has children, culminating in the girl that looks like Alexis from the background of Zexal.

Great video. A few things I noticed rewatching GX during the pandemic. Judai’s relationship with Johan isn’t romantic. It’s not even romantic with Yubel. The way love is viewed in Japan is very much intertwined with honor. It’s not necessarily sexual. Johan is the first friend that Judai doesn’t see either as weaker than him or an overt rival like Ryo or Edo in that he isn’t antagonistic toward him. Johan also has qualities that Judai lacks, whilst being similar enough to be relatable. Judai admires how Johan’s goal is to make friends with spirits throughout the world, which shocks Judai when he first finds that out as his goal up to that point was to be king of games. This represents a shift at the end of the story as Judai now shares the same, or a similar goal, as Johan. Johan is also the first friend to sacrifice himself for Judai. Up to that point, Judai was the only one really risking it all. He was always the one saving people, and for the first time Johan saves him. The fact that he begins to realize Yubel is the cause makes him feel responsible, thus setting up Season 3’s trip into the alternate dimension. The sacrifice of the original gang is a bit harder to parse, but I think the clearest interpretation is it was just manipulation on Yubel’s part to bring out the Supreme King by amplifying the gang’s secret resentments and lying about Johan’s death. Season 4 is really impactful and it would be great to have a dedicated video on it. Judai’s story is a nice take on growing up, depression, and trauma. I think it’s actually the most true to life series of Yugioh once you see passed the goofy fantasy dressing. Judai’s friends weren’t the best friends. They began to understand his trauma by the end, but GX is a fantastic take on the isolation and trauma that can occur to young people in their teenage years. Judai is a traumatized character who somehow finds it within himself to learn to live with that trauma. I think it’s actually a beautiful message that gets lost on a lot of viewers.

I would disagree for the ending of season 4. Judai's whole arc in season 4 is acceptance and moving on, during the start he still feels responsible for everything that has happened so far and still has PTSD and depression from being the supreme king, however during the season he grows as a character and accepts the things that have happened, he gets his joy for dueling again and he mends past relationships with his friends and every single one of them learns to be their own person and not relay on him and finally fully understanding him as a person, especially Sho and Asuka. Sho becomes his own person no longer in his brother's shadow and no longer needing Judai's help being able to stand up for himself and no longer afraid that he might turn out like his brother but accepting their similarities but also taking to heart all the things he has learned from his friends. Meanwhile Asuka finally understood Judai as a person, she was ready to confess her feelings for him but she stopped herself seeing Judai smile again feeling like his old self and instead thanked him for being a good rival, and after noticing he started acting and speaking again like when they meet she says goodbye and cries, it was bitter sweet as she cared for him but she understood that Judai didn't have the same feelings for her back but she was happy that he had returned to his old self. All his friends grow as people and as for Judai he accepts all the bad that has happened and that he has done and that it will always be a part of him and he has to accept it and move on. He started the season cutting himself off from everyone but it was everyone else that tried to better themselves without him and they end up mending their relationships. The season ends with everyone having to move on from their teenage years and take their next step in life. Judai at the end of everything leaves the school no longer as a teenager but as an adult, he was ready to take his next step in life and find out who he really is.

Long comment essay incoming.... I disagree that the supreme king flashbacks were out of place. If you pay close attention you will find that there's an underlying subplot of Judai being very special and bound to historic past events all throughout the series and the flashback serves as the final revelation to all the mystery of the show. You have to pay real close attention and it's never explicitly shown but the breadcrumbs are there. Judai, in his past self as the supreme king, wielded the gentle darkness through the use of alchemy to combat the light of destruction. He lived in a time long after the Egyptian monster duels which were by this point legends of the past. The sacred beasts, being the key monsters of the series, were all likely created through alchemy as they represent recreations of the egyptian gods crafted imperfectly in an attempt of the supreme king to reclaim those powers and use them as his own to protect the world. They were wielded by the supreme king alongside Yubel which is why Yubel specifically uses the sacred beasts in the show. She is familiar with using them. Yubel was alchemicaly fused with a myriad of other monsters and spirits to gain the power of aiding Judai and became a monster herself. The ultimate concept in alchemy, the philosopher stone, appears as a cards that supports Winged Kuriboh specifically tying alchemy to Judai even more. Winged Kuriboh is possibly another alchemical experiment he conducted to recreate the powers of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs who were lost to time by his lifetime. Wined Kuriboh was given to Judai by an adult Yugi ( or the spirit of Atem ) who sensed Judai's true purpose and Winged Kuriboh guided Judai to his destiny before he met Yubel again. It's also very likely that the shadow rider's milenium charms are recreations of the original milenium items he himself created. None of these were "cheap copies of the original series", but were instead the remnants of the supreme king using alchemy to recreate long lost powers and use them as his own. In fact the whole theme of GX is alchemy with Judai using elemental heroes ( representing the fundamental elements in alchemy ) and fusing them ( creating alchemical reactions ) to get new powers. Him choosing to use these cards specifically could be his past spirit being drawn to fundamental element monsters he used in his past life. The elemental heroes are manifestations of alchemical elements themselves. The new Yubel card that was recently announced also gives ground to this since it looks exactly like Flame Wingman which was Judai's favourite at the start. Flame Wingman was his favourite because he reminded Judai subconsciously of Yubel from the past. Each enemy he faces in the story is connected to his past life. First he faces Amnael and Kagemaru, the founders of duel academy who were in search of these ancient powers and the sacred beasts. Judai was possibly unknowingly drawn to duel academy in the first place because of the sacred beasts and he was the true key to the awakening of these powers since they are his true servants. Amnael specifically states that he needs Judai's soul to fully gain control of the Sacred Beasts. This is no coincidence at all. Duel academy is likely built on the same island that the ancient castle we see in the flashback was. This is where the supreme king of the past sealed the sacred beasts to serve as guardians from the light. Then he faced the light of destruction, who likely attacked because it sensed the defeat of the sacred beasts. The barrier to the light, the sacred beasts, were disturbed by Kagemaru which allowed the light to enter the world again. Judai losing sight of his cards after dueling Edo could've been the light's doing as well to cripple his ability to fight. Judai managed to overcome that and prevented the light once more from destroying the world, but this time having attained a warrior of light himself, that being Neos, allowing him to draw not only from the gentle darkness but also from the gentle light. Neos could even be connected to Yubel in some way. Maybe he met Yubel before she was corrupted by the light and decided to help Judai when things went wrong. When light and darkness are combined in YuGiOh they become chaos. So Judai attains the powers of chaos by the end of the series through Neos and Yubel. The light entering the world allowed for Yubel, who was now an agent of the light, to enter the world as well and begin her scheming. Judai then reunited with his long lost companion Yubel after saving her from the light's corruption and gained back control of his powers of the gentle darkness. Yubel stayed by Judai's side all this time and found her way to him when he was a child, but was sent away not knowing that she was protecting him like in ages past when duels were battles to the death so she felt betrayed by him and the light of destruction took this to it's advantage and corruputed her. Judai becomes the cruel supreme king from losing his friends. We are never told what the supreme king Judai of today wanted to truly accomplish but it was likely a mission left unfulfilled from his past that carried over to the present and it's possible that he was just as ruthless in the past for reasons unknown ( likely some war event ) or alternatively ( and what I like to believe ) is that he was unknowingly being controlled by Nightshroud ( darkness ) during this part of the story. Darkness took advantage of Judais frail state and accessed his mind through his link to the powers of darkness to control him as it did to other characters in the series, each time giving them a dark armor outfit. Judai ultimately overcame that corruption with the help of his friends. He never became ruthless on his own accord, but instead was influenced by Nightshroud. If you compare his supreme king armor to Nightshroud's final form and the design of other characters controlled by him you'll see that they match a lot. But the supreme king armor doesn't match anything we see in the flashbacks. The cruel supreme king was likely Nightshroud all along. Finally, being the wielder of the gentle darkness, he managed to prevent the cruel darkness ( Nightshroud ) from destroying the world which it tried to do after failing to gain control over Judai. Nightshroud only showed up directly after it failed to gain control over Judai which seemed to have been it's original goal. This can even be seen with his duel against Fubuki where it likely attempted to awaken the supreme king by putting his friends in danger the same way it did with Bronn later on. I'd even argue that Judai had a deeper past connection with the other shadow riders as well in some way. Each of the plots flow into each other nicely one by one if you pay close attention and rewatch the show. The sacred beasts being awakened allow the light to enter which allows Yubel to return which causes Judai to become corrupted by Nightshroud who then shows up himself after that fails. As such you could interpret the whole story being a tug of war of various sides trying to take Judai's soul and dormant powers and use them for their own accord and him breaking free from them and following his own path and making his own destiny. The story begins with Judai coming to duel academy because he wants to make friends which is why he's so friendly all the time, but after he fuses with Yubel ( and becomes a fusion monster lol ) his true objective becomes clear to him. He is the supreme king from the past and all the battles he fought were part of his destiny. He wasn't at the academy for fun, he had come to the grounds of his ancient castle to finish the job he started. He had a mission to fulfill similarly to how Atem had to finish his job with Zarc. Ultimately he does find joy in dueling again once the job is done when he faces of against Atem who likely sensed Judai's doubt from the other world and being a fellow wielder of dark powers who doubted himself all the time in the original show called on Judai to help him. Judai's true destiny after the show is unknown, but I'd argue that he had a role to play in the creation of synchro summoning and moving the series forward. Edit : Another thing to note is that Amnael's spirit ( Amnael being an alchemist and alchemy teacher at the academy ) stays with Judai and shows great interest in him all the time, likely because he knew about the Supreme King from the past and assumed he'd show up here as well, which he did in the form of Judai.

Good take, makes sense.. A GX sequel with the adventures of Judai could be awesome with the right producers having a vision for it. By the end of the series Judai is the equivalent of a jedi master so who knows what's in store for him, perhaps star wars/saving the galaxy with his neo spacean friends haha. I know the latest yugioh series is featuring aliens etc, what a wasted opportunity!

I think some of this is a bit of a stretch, like the stuff about Neos, but I like most of it! I definitely got the sense they were just trying various things, but you did a more coherent job of linking them together than the final showdown with Darkness did.

@@kaitlyn__L GX suffered the same fate as a all of the other next gen YuGiOh series, that being production time and change of direction. This can be most obviously seen in the character of Bastion who, at first, appears as an antithesis of Judai, using elements through modern chemistry rather than through alchemy. His role was likely a lot more important originally, but then he ended up being a comic relief with a waifu deck.... I love GX so I'm willing to stretch the original material to turn it into a more coherent and better written story. The puzzle pieces are there, but the show runners fumbled hard on some of them.

@@kaitlyn__L I've been thinking of making a deep dive into GX and all the meanings that can be drawn from it for a while. If you carefully analyze the duels Judai has throughout the show you'll realize that there's meaning in them. The duel with Bastion was old alchemy vs new chemistry with Bastion stopping fusion ( ironically called polymerization in english, a chemical process ) which could be seen as a magical alchemical union as if to say "there's no more space for magic in new science" and then using bonding spells for his summons only to be defeated by Bladeedge, who wears gold armor, gold being the most important element in alchemy. There's also the fact that Crowler, who uses an ancient gear deck themed around ancient mechanisms and soldiers hates Judai since alchemy was seen as an opposition to mechanization of the time. Even the duel with Belowski ( a sleepy guy ) could be seen as an attempt of the mechanical movement to prevent new sources of knowledge like alchemy dormant and sleeping etc. There's a lot more nuance to the show than it seems at first. I know it's a lot of stretching but I love how these things can be interpreted and fit together nicely.

Okay, i will present what i think regarding both Judai and Johan, Judai's other life, and give a bit of info on the last season, before saying what i think it was trying to do. So Judai and Johan, why was he so obssessed with him on the last part of the 3rd season, i think it was guilty, the reason it's because Johan quickly became someone Judai both could connect and feel understood, but also someone he look up to. And because of Yubel's actions, because of his past actions, because of *HIM,* Johan disappear and didn't come back, the possibility that he was dead killed him, it's why he didn't wanted his friends with him, he fear the same happening to them, and because he didn't think things through it happen. He was buried in guilt, in fact, think about season 4, sure Johan helps him at the end, but it isn't like he says goodbye to him personally or feels an stronger connection with him then the rest. That probably tells you that while he can connected more easily to him, he wasn't that important to him, it was more of the guilt driving him. Judai's other life, true it's hinted multiple times that Judai will save the universe, but there is something else. Even on the 7 Stars arc, probably the worse GX arc, at the end Kagemaru outright says something along the lines of "I will only fight Judai in this duel, because he was an unique power" have in mind Manjoume could also see spirits, yet that wasn't enough. Something that Kagemaru hints too, it's that the power is related to controlling duel Spirits and he wants it to control the 3 Phantoms/Sacred Beast. And on the Ra filler episode, Judai's presence at the end manages to calm and connect with the copy of Ra. Through the last story arc where the Supreme King is in controls, it's hinted that the duel spirits that come across him and resist end in 2 situations death or submit to him. So i think there was enough set up for this, whatever we like the payoff, it's a different subject that, it's all up to the viewer. In my opinion, it adds to the connection between Yubel and Judai which was painfully necessary if he was to fuse his soul with Yubel's, beyond, Yubel suffer because of my actions as a child. The last season, first of all, we know it was cutshort because the next anime was in production and it was about to come out, along side with the new summoning mechanic that Konami wanted to promote. Heck literally after GX, finishes, 5D's begins and a lot of cards in the story arc of GX that come out, they are changed, so fusion doesn't take the attention away from Synchros, this can be clearly seen with Neos Wiseman, a fusion in the anime it's... An effect Monster that requires Neos and Yubel to be on the field, which years later gets a retain which is a fusion this time around... *DO I NEED TO SAY MORE.* So, to me the idea of season 4 was 2 folded. When Judai comes back in the montage episode is clear that his smile isn't honest, as it use to be. He looks also completely different, this is to represent he is now an adult, he has grown, but growning so fast, it means forgetting stuff that's important for the responsabilities that we have, which is what happens to Judai, he becomes an hermit, he pushes or avoids his friends, he thinks, he is too dangerous and that he would bring them pain, so he prefers to be a silent protector from afar. After a while he learns that staying away doesn't mean that they will be safe, he can't control people, so he begins to let them on, and through different experiences where they begin to come together into their own adultselves more healthy them Judai did, Judai begins to regain a bits of himself, but by the end there is one more thing he needed to recover, the ability to enjoy duels, to enjoy life. I think this was the idea of the final season, but it was speedrun because of upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime, which damages the effort that it tried to do. Btw, if you enjoyed GX this much, i would recommend, if you haven't seen it in years and got stuck with the initial impression, to go and watch Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal, it gets very interesting through the middle to ends, the beginning it's an slow burn, but it's necessary. And the people that worked on Zexal are the ones that end up joining the team of Kazuki Takahashi in The Dark Side of Dimensions.

I think it is important to take into consideration the overarching theme of DM and GX. For DM it was about friendship. Yugi is alone at the start (Save for Anzu) but slowly makes more friends and learns what it means to be a friend (i.e. letting Atem go to the afterlife and not selfishly keeping him in the world of the living). It shows the positive impact friends can have on a person as Yugi changes Atem for the better (remember what an absolute madlad Atem was in s.0 and how he almost killed Seto?). GX is about growing up. Judai starts as a carefree kid who slowly but surely experiences things that forces him to grow up. At the end he learns how to be a balanced adult, not dismissing his responsibilities but also not letting go of his childhood memories or what brings him joy in life. I really wish that season 4 had been longer as we could have seen more fleshed out conclusions for the side characters, but all in all I am very happy that Judai regains his love for dueling at the end. It is very bittersweet when you think about it... I'm not sure if this was only in the dub, but IIRC Judai dreamed about being the next king of games. I'm glad his dream changed though I am not sure what it is at the end tbh, just finding himself and protecting the world?

Johan is deliberately designed to look like Judais direct counterpart. blue hair and outfit. after everything judai had been through throughout the series up to that point he was seen as "the reliable guy" even tho he just wanted to have fun he's always saving the world. johan doesn't make him feel like he needs to save the world, Johan makes him feel wanted instead of needed unlike everyone else on the cast ESPECIALLY sho (who has been calling judai aniki and has been said to be his side kick and cheerleader).

Honestly, I think the writers made a mistake with season 3. When I look back at Yu-Gi-Oh GX, I think of a lighthearted show that follows an episodic plot rather than one continuous story that, for the characters, takes place in a small amount of time. Something that went in the opposite direction of its predecessor. The light to DM’s darkness. But then season 3 came around. They changed the theme of the show into something dark and edgy. They put our Slifer protagonist (Jaden/Judai) through constant self loathing. And they introduced an antagonist (Yubel) that we were apparently supposed to sympathize with, despite having a personality that’s more akin to a toxic/abusive girlfriend (being possessive, refusing to acknowledge their mistakes, and blaming their victims). And then there’s what they did to Jaden as a character. Granted, some people may defend that by calling it ‘character development’, but I don’t think that was really necessary. From what I’ve seen, there are two kinds of protagonists: The kind who seek growth and the kind who inspire it. Throughout the series, Jaden has given advice to others, help them to change for the better. He taught others despite being a student (albeit a very poor one). Jaden always struck me as a hero with an unexpected sense of wisdom. Someone who knew what to say and didn’t let the bad stuff get to him. Because of that, I hated what the show did to Jaden’s character in season 3. At first, I just disliked how he blamed himself (and got blamed by others) for things that were beyond his control. But now that I look at it again, I feel that the writers really messed up Jaden’s personality, turning him into what could be considered his Shadow (Jungian term). He was portrayed as being someone who needed to learn about “Dueling for the sake of others” and “What it means to truly be a hero.” But the thing about Jaden is that he always put himself in danger for the sake of helping his friends. And while he never displayed any self sacrifice back then, that’s because he was never exposed to a situation that called for it. He always had to win and survive in order to save the world. If it were up to me, I would’ve gotten rid of season 3 (including season 4), replace it with something that fits the theme of the previous seasons, and add a few more changes that I thought of (feel free to ask). It will still have a coming-of-age story, but it will focus more on the supporting cast than the main protagonist. Then, towards the end, there’ll be a scene of Jaden looking back on his Duel Academy days while also revealing the depth of his character, including its own development. He knew all along that life wasn’t all fun and games. But he chose to act like a fearless fool because he knew that giving in to pressure wouldn’t do him any good. By attending Duel Academy, he went through many challenges that tested him as a duelist and sometimes lead to his own personal growth. A hero who started off good, but became even better.

Maybe because I’m such a stan of DM but the seasons or parts of Seasons when the show is more like DM are the ones i like the best. Season 4 is honestly my favorite of the bunch. I was always indifferent towards 3 and found 2 boring. Bear in mind this is all in retrospection i still very much liked the series. One trait of Yugioh gx i love is how it kept the theme of Yugioh regarding darkness vs light and showing us darkness isn’t necessarily evil

I loved the video but I disagree with the last few sentences, The whole Yugi thing was that judai lost his way and forgot what it is like to have fun, he was more grooming, sad and angry all the time. It is that when you finally meet your hero and Yugi teaches him to have fun again. It is truly beautifully written, I am really surprised how it everything ended perfectly. Yes Judai in a way lost his friends but that's life, he at least in the end found himself again.

No matter how much I love (and always will love) Duel Monsters, GX is the most relatable Yu-Gi-Oh! Series. In retrospect It's probably, Judai is so fucking relatable, man. I can't really relate to Atem or Yugi in the same way at all. Only Yu-Gi-Oh! I watch in subs. I always wished we could get a re-dub of the english version.

Well there is another season that you are missing that was never dubbed so it was never aired in the states but the very last duel we see him have is with yugi and yugi reminds him of who he is and why he duels in the first place thus taking away that seriousness judai developed over the show.

The reason for those flashbacks had to do with his childhood after sending Yubel away into space Yubel made contact with the Light of Destruction which harmed her soul, body, and mind to the point she tried contacting Kid Jaden in his dreams leading to horrible nightmares so bad Jaden's parents were forced to give their kid electro shock therapy so he can forget Yubel that noy only cut off Jaden's connection with Yubel, but also his connection with Duel Monster Spirits until Yugi gave Jaden Winged Kuriboh

Judai was obsessed by Yohan... Yubel was obsessed by Judai... (Yohan was possessed by Yubel) Judai wanted to save only Yohan bcz he doesn't remember Yubel, his parents fried his brain, but when he was able to save Yohan, he decided to think about Yubel, now he gave her a chance to know love, to be with your love and in S4 they are trying to balance things, to understand what to do now, I sincerely believe that Judai+Yubel are in a deep stoic momentum to mix and match their feelings and memories.. In the duel against the dude friend of Zane and Atticus, he and Yohan duelled against him in a 1v1v1 duel, Yuki and Yohan was beating each other instead of focusing all damage on the bad guy and the bad boy was just enjoying watching them face each other only to see them laughing afterwards and knowing that was actually just for fun. A duel for life and death but they only want to have a duel together, they just are in this married couple relationship already lool. I believe that they didn't duel together after the Yubel incident, since Yohan needed to go back to North Academy and his Rainbow Dragon official printing auntenticathion or something like that with Pegasus or going to help other spirits or anything I don't know... Why Yohan left the Academy in Season 4? Or he didn't... Someone tell me

Would love to talk to you in detail through audio about this; so hit me up anytime; but-outside Judai alongside Johan gravitating to each other for both being able to speak/interact with Duel Spirits-Judai gravitates to Johan because it is the first time he has a friend/mate that does not put him on a pedestal. Every other character for many episodes has burdened/shouldered the responsibilities, saving the world, and tackling these past issues on Judai alone. “No need to worry-Judai will save us!” Judai being placed in this position every time is damaging to him, and he loses his sense of self. So Johan comes along-and does not place or puts him on this pedestal to take on all of the problems/circumstances alone. Yes-his friends do support in the side, but they rarely ever had to clean up or help head on. Judai has to do those world ending duels himself every time with onlookers. He cannot fail. Johan is the only friend at that point that treats him as his equal not as his superior like everyone has for many arcs. Judai can just be with Johan. That Judai does not have to inevitably “save the world” all by himself. Johan is the first to treat him like that as an equal-a partner.

You can see it as a reflection of reality. That people change. That your school friends don't always stay with you and everyone has to go their own way. That if you were a very happy person back in school, that you won't stay that way forever and that life shapes and changes you and you can also become more serious, but that doesn't mean anything bad. Just like others who were serious back then and had a lot of pressure from their family and had no friends, got a lot of friends later and became a very funny and open person and could be the way they always were. I would say that GX is ultimately a story about growing up. But I would have liked another GX film or something similar where you can see what people have become after a few years after the academy. Chazz definitely became a professional, that much can be imagined. But did he manage to become the greatest professional ever? Did he manage to marry Alexis?^^ What happened to everyone else? What happened to Jaiden? Did he walk around the world alone forever with his ghosts? Did he start caring for the Duel Spirits and become a kind of medium? Did he become a professional too? Did he perhaps become a teacher or director at the Akedmie?

The ending I have to disagree about. Jaden did seem to end the show making condolences and even re patching his friendships with them. As if he wanted to meet with all of them again, that could be possible. However, it does seem like he will not see them again and he will take a more lonely journey path. He doesn’t seem to mind but man that’s still pretty depressing.

To be fair, it is not like Judai threw away all of his old friends for the new ones in Season 3. He was much more desperate because he felt responsible for Jessie disappearing after knowing that he was the cause of this whole incident. He was also scared of losing his other friends which is why he opted to go alone in multiple occasions. And of course, it led to several mistakes which was nearly unreversable. In the Duel with the Darkworld monster, he was forced to attack by the card effect, even after he skipped his battle phase. So while he lost his cool and made lots of mistake, he had never abandoned or sacrificed his friends.
