What a brilliant game of football. Two brilliant teams. Brian Moore commentary made these games extra special imo. 🙂

The gulf in quality is so evident. The 2 goals from Barcelona were sheer quality. The 1st one the way they zig zag the back from defence into the back of the net is class.

100% correct! Barca beat United 4-0 in the return fixture that year.

@@SKa-tt9nm I can recall that 4-0 thumping Utd took. English clubs on their return to Europe would get hammered all the time by the European elites. It was the during infancy days off the Premier League.

Tbf, before the Heysel disaster, English clubs had dominated the tournament for almost 10 years. The ban on them completing for 5 years did take a toll on the clubs and they struggled and probably got left behind without that exposure to european styles. It is only a decade after this when 442 etc started to change that we saw another period of English dominance. Note here the difference in styles, Man United with 2 quick direct wingers getting to the byline crossing to forwards, which was highly successful in the domestic competitions. Barca with a more pass and move style not suited to english football at the time (rainy Wednesday night in Stoke springs to mind).
@SKa-tt9nm11 ай бұрын
@@Tom-yw6pxthis! In the decade prior to heysel, English teams had won 7 out of 9 champions leagues. Liverpool were rampant with 4, vila with 1 and forest won 2 back to back. Italian teams didn’t start dominating until after 1985, after the suspension.

Keegan couldn’t help himself with that Schmeichel nut meg comment ,its almost as if he knew his Newcastle team would go up against him two years later and he’d single handedly deny him the title on his own turf.....

@@soulsmischief2626maldini is the greatest defender I’ve ever seen play. However, in 1994 specifically: Hristo won the ballon dor, a golden boot, scored the winning goal that gave Barca their 4th title in a row and helped his nation reach 4th place at the WC. Romario was voted fifa player of the world, golden ball for best player at WC, won the WC with Brazil and was absolutely dominant with Barca, scoring 30 goals in la Liga alone.

United would have probably won this game with Cantona in the field. Butt was too immature to play this game and Hughes would have done a lot better with a real 10 instead of Paul Ince who was better coming from behind.
